From the Lehigh Valley report It ap
pears that during the year 2.U0U coal cars
of W,Ui)0 poumls capacity were contracted
for and their delivery Is nearly completed.
The ownership of these cars Is vested In
the Lehigh Valley Terminal Hallway com
pany under a car trust. Out of 61,030 coal
and freltfht cars of the company 13,177 are
fitted with M. C. H. couplers and S,!Oi
with air brakes. The policy has been
adopted of abandoning four-wheel coal
cars which require large repairs, and l.K-l
of these cars have been broken up, being
replaced by the new eight-wheel cars
This substitution has given an Increase of
37.71HJ tons in coal-car capacity.

The stocks of coal on hand as reported
monthly are no longer regarded as having
the important bearing on the tradu they
once had. In recent years almost every
carrying company has established along
Its line and at ultimate points of distri
bution large storage places for coal. The
amount of coal stored at these points Is
not given out, though It Is obvious that
this coal has a continual Influence on the
trade. It Is Interesting to know how
much coal Is stored ut tide and the usual
table showing the amount each month for
several years is given:

The Knglneerlng and Mining Journal of
Saturday contained the following: "Some
of the Philadelphia papers have, as usual,
managed to condense a great deal of mis
information und of strictly illogicul reasoning-
Into their paragraphs ubout ihj
coal traile. One of them this week said
that the highest price obtained for coal In
New York today was $3.25. This Is not
true. Our contemporary probably has
only Just heard the reports that appeared
In this column three months ago. An
other statement was that the true expla
nation of the poor showing made by the
coal roads was to, be found In the exist
ence of contracts' with the Independent
operators by which the roads bought
the former's coal at 80 per cent, of the
tidewater price, thus making the freight
rate but 40 per cent., or, on the basis of
$3.25 for stove at tide, only $1.30, the small
er sizes being oven less. This Is why the
Lehigh and the Jersey Central dip so
poorly, according to our Philadelphia con
temporary. This statement Is so absurd
as to be scarcely worthy of formal refuta
tion, but It has appeared In several papers
lately. If their agreement with the Inde
pendent operators ts what has kept the
Lehigh Valley and Jersey Central from
doing wdII why Is It that the Reading,
which is comparatively free from this
incubus has not clone well in its coal
business? On the other hand, why Is It
that the New York, Ontario und West
ern, which has a longer haul and handles
no coal save what It buys on the CO per
cent, basis from Independent operators,
makes a good showing? Its coal business
probably saved the Ontario from disaster.
Again, the 'Independent' operators, taking
their aggregate output, constitute le.is
than a third of the trade. Why did not
the coal companies, controlled by the
railroads und constituting more than two
thirds of the trade, do well? Their advan
tage Is the same as that of the Independ
ent operators. As a matter of fact, we
doubt whether the Lehigh Valley could
obtain as high a freight rate for its coal
as It does now If the contracts with tho
operators were not In force. The rail
roads mentioned by the dally press are
not complaining about the oo per cent,
agreement."

greatest sufferers. An advance In Ster

steadier tone prevailed and Just pre

rapidly, the Improvement ranged from
to 1. Lead again being a feature.
The president's message was well re
ceived, but there was a disposition to
disapprove of the recommendation for
smull silver coins. Later on advices
from Washington were to the effect
that the president's suggestions would
not receive immediate attention und
that ithe silver men would light the
gold bond Issue. At the same time
call money shot up to 3 per cent. This
led to renewed liquidation and in the
last hour of business the murket was

TO our patrons:
Washburn-Croshy Co. wish to assure their many pat
rons that thev will this vcar hold to their usual custom
of milling STRICTLY OLD WHEAT until the new crop
is fully cured. New wheat is now upon the market, anj
owing to the excessively dry weather many millers aro
of the opinion that it is already cured, and in proper
condition for milling. Washburn-Crosby Co. will take
no risks, and will allow the new wheat fully three
months to mature before grinding.
This careful attention to every detail of milling Iihs
E laced Washburn-Crosby Co.'s flour far above other
rands.
