oal cars in service is 4,037, of these 3,850
liave been acquired since the Scranton ex
tension was undertaken in 1889. The com
pany now owns 3,187 coal cars and 1,350
cars are held under lease of 1891, having
cost 47A3!7, of which amount $41,710 has
already been paid, leaving a balance to be
paid within the next four years of &K,-

The statement of the Philadelphia
and Heading Railroad company for the

Twelve years ago JG. R. Brown, gen
eral superintendent of the Fall Brook
Railway company, introduced Ion that
road what is known as "discipline with
punishment system," with the best re
Hults. Recently F. G. Darlington, su
perintendent of the Indianapolis divi
sion of tbe Pennsylvania lines, has in
troduced this plan, says the Journal,
intending, he says, to give it a good
test, and every employe who has been
disciplined this month has been given
the benefit of this plan. In eaeh case
evidence Is taken and the sentenoe of
suspension, thirty or sixty days, as the
case may be, according to. the rules
of the company, put on record; "the
sentenoe is then suspended, and the
full report of the examination is placed
on record, as each offense may come
up, until such a time is reached that
the record is so bad that the company
is justified in dismissing tbe employe.
As far as explained to the men and
acted on by Superintendent Darlington,
the employes express satisfaction. For
Instance, should a switchman misplace
a switch and an accident occur, the
record is made out, and if such a thing
occurs again dismissal is likuly to fol
low, and certainly on tbe third offense.
Discipline without punishment is not
praeticed where an employs uses in
toxicating liquors or gambles; in such
cases dismissal is tbe punishment,.
As anticipated, the coal i1a agents
nt their meeting in New York, ad
vanced the eastern price of conl to the
May circular, which was $3 50 for
broken and egg, and $3 75 for stove and
chestnut. Western prices were ad
vanced to $4 per ton for grate, and
54.15 for other sizes to Bnffalo. The
prices to Chicago were advanced to
$4 75 for grate and $5 per net ton for

immediately. (Tbe outpot for October
was fixed at 8,01)0,000 tons, against 2,

Minor Industrial Notes:
The latest Reading re-organization plan
is recoived variously, but mainly with
favor.
The Western New York and Pennsyl
vania has in tbe last teu days oontracWd
for new iron bridges to be built along its
Hue to cost over $200,000.
J. N. King, division superintendent of
the Lehigh Valley, will retire from that
position Oct. 1, to take a positiou on the
New York and New Euglaud.
The Reading's coal tonnage for the week
ended Sept. 23 increased 3,408.06 tons.
The decreaso for the year to that date,
however, was 888,073. 10 tons.
Operations were started at tbe Dodge
mills at Williamsport sawing the 3,000,000
feet of logs that have been taken off the
island near the outlet of Lycoming creek.
After an idleness of over a year work
bus been resumed at the American sheet
mill, Easton, iu the puddling department.
The resumption is due to a big order re
ceived. Aftor the remodeling of the Carpenter
Steel works now in progress in lieudiug,
so as to mid a building 40 by 230 feet, oper
ations will be recommenced in all depart
ments. It is said that among the names serious
ly mentioned for the position of general
muuagtir of the Philadelphia aud Read
ing Coal and Iron company, is that of
Elmer H. Ltwall.
On Oct. 1 C. II. Hoggerty will take the
position ot district passenger agent of the
Pennsylvania lines at Louisville and A,
A. Anderson the position of city ticket
agent at that point.
The officers of the Pennsylvania com
pany, which controls the Pennsylvania
railroad lines west of Pittsburg, have
agreed to observe the Saturday half holi
day throughout the year.
The Warren foundry at Pliillipsburg,
N. J., which employs over 500 bands and
turns out 125 tons of pipe daily, is unable
to fill orders by running ten bours a day,
aud the hauds will hereafter work eleven
hours.
The Lochiel, Paxton and Central Rolling
mills at Harrisburg are on double turn.
In the Pennsylvania Steel works at Steel
ton three furnaces are in blast, with spec
ial activity iu tbe bridge, construction and
frog departments. The American Tube
aud Iron company's Mlddletown plant was
at work on double turn in neurly overv
department. The lost semi-monthly pay
roll of the Stoelton works footed up (81,
200, a large increase over tbe previous one.
The woolen mills at New Cumberland are
running day and night and the wages of
its employes have been increased 10 per
cent.

Stocks and Bonds.
New York, Sept. 27. Generally speak
ing the stock market displayed a great
deal of firmness today The advances were
by no means lurge, but the fact that there
was any .improvement at all excited no
little apprebeusion in the bear ranks iu
view of tbe big drop in Sugar aud the
weakness of some of the other industrials
and specialties. Sugar was forced for sale
throughout the session aud declined from
'M to Distillers were weak, but on
the other band Reading aud all of the
grangers developed positive strength and
advanced X to 1 per cent. Despite the
weakness in Sugar these stocks re-acted
only fractionally at the close. Total sales
235,000, of which 87,000 were Sugar.
