Delaney, Our New Pitcher, Had a Favorable Impression. There were sonuds of revelry in the prnnd stand as Dan Shannon's band of licorice sticks went down with several kinds of dull thads to the slow music of the Midway Plaisance orohestra, oc cupying aa elevated position oa the niuth floor of the aforesaid grand stnnd. The victory yesterday over Wilkes Barre at the ball park was not expeot ed, and Jack Neat wag so dumbfounded when it was all over that he forgot to ay a word, to that it will be seen that the surprise was great indeed. But then Wilkes-Barre was easy yes terday. Maybe Shannon, out of pure commiseration ou suffering Scranton, took his men over to Dilley Wednesday night to celebrate the victory, or it may be perchance that association with Ca bin's men has been injurious. At all events, true it is that there was a dis tinct flavor of "has been" about the work of Wilkes-Barre. We will not quarrel with Shannon's men on that score, however, for it gave us a same, which is something to be thankful for. FLAYED BETTER BALL. Cahill's braves played in much bet ter form than on Tuesday, He seemed to have innoculated his men with some of bis own personality and they played the game as though they bad a Txrnll riafinAri idrtA nf what-. ttiAV WArA All - - ' - j T - - earth for. Scranton was stronger in the pitching department, two, than it was on Tuesday. Delaney made bis first appearance and won favor from the start. He is cool and beady and In some respects reminds the spectator strongly of Hod son. He was fonnd twelve times yes terday as follows: Home run, one triple, three doubles and seven singles. He gave two inon bases on balls, bit two and struck out six men. He kept the hits fairly well scattered and at critical moments wai cool and effec tive. An instance of this occurred in the seventh. When Wilkes-Barre went to bat in the last half of that; inning the soore was Scranton, 11; Wilkes-Barre, 8. Shannon opened up the matinee with a two base hit, and the rear row rooters began to sing "It's All Oyer Now" to a dirge-like accompaniment by tbe Midway orchestra. Stearns was hit with a pitched ball, and Lezotte mad a single that allowed Shannon to score. Betts flied ont to Hoover, but Stearns scored before tbe ball could be returned to the diamond amid unmis takable evidence of grief from the rear row and Jack Neat. DELANEY GOES TO WORK. Right at this point is where Mr. Delaney began to declare himself. When Gillen presented himself at the plate Delaney gave several hitches to bis trousers, a la Flanaghan, and weut to work. Gillen fanned tbe air tbrioe and retired to tbe bench to give War ner a chance. Warner, by tbe way, is the tall dark-brown young man who punished Mr. Donovan so unmercifully at Wilkes-Barre on the previous day. Well, Mr. Warner spat upon bis bands and rubbed them in the portion of the United States about bis well de veloped feet and after hammering the home plate a little deeper into mother w ' M v- -rr ;" Mas! Eisner & Mendelson Co., Sole Agents, New York. earth with his bat was satisfied that there was no flaw in that particular willow, so he in turn gave a hitch to his trowsers and directed toward Mr. Delaney a look that meant "com on," if it meant anything. Tbe ex-Parlor City boy didn't come, bat tbe ball did. In fact it came several times in an er ratic way tut greatly perturbed Mr. Warner. After three unsuccessful readies for it be. too, gave it up in dis gust. The power of Djlnney's strong right arm bad been vindicated and the day saved for Scranton. WHAT CAMPFIELD DID "Campfild. the slender youth, whom Wilkes-Barre once upon a time allow ed to coino to this city but afterwards recalled, official) d iu she pitching box for tiie visitors and was only a trifle loss effactive than Delaney. Scranton had ten men left on bases while Wilkes Barre bad but four. Rogers went behind the bat the beginning of the game, but injured one of hie fingers in tbe first iuuing and bad to retire, Patohen tnking his place, la the fifth inning Whitehead was taken sick nnd hud to leave the ground, whereupon Cahlll sent Phelnu in from right field to cover third and put Rogers in right.
