SCHOOL HOUSE WAll.
Lively Meeting; at Minooka Jo Protest
Against the Erection of an Ad
ditional Building.
Special to the Scranton Tribune.
Min'ooka, Aug. 2 The citlzsna of
Miuookit met in loud protest at No. 3
school building lust night to cry down
the action of the nchool board of
Lackawanna township in pnssin n
resolution to spend the sum of $9 000
toward theersction of a new scLool at
Mooaio.
The indignation meeting, as it may
very properly be classsfieU.outheralded
any caucus gathering or any similar
meeting ever held in the South district
of L.ickawanna.
Peter Mullen was the most nervous
gentleman heard from. His speech
was an amusing medley of views on
the labor question, cash store business
and general arraignment of big compa
nies and corporations.
Mr. Mullen sitid: ''We are the mas
tern and the school directors are our
svrviinta, and we don't want any class
of men, or, for that matter, any body
of men, to speuk beyond their
conscience.' This expression was
the only relevant reference made
by him on the snl jict, and he sat down
leaving his auditors in a confused
plight as to his meaning or his views,
with the following conclusion: "I hope
I have clearly stated my views in this
matter." Deep silence followed.
Director GriftliU T. Davis arose to ex
plain the position of the school board
in the matter of the Moosic school.
He said that tbe board became con
vinced that it was a useless expendi
ture of money to go on year afier year
making improvements on the two
school buildings in Moosic, as in the
end they would be still far from the
point which would prove to tbe citi
zens that any material good was done
by patching up old buildings, lie ex
plained tbe reason why the school term
was curtailed one month last year
was because a free text book bill was
psssed last year by tbe state legisla
ture and tbe board in carrying out the
provisions of that law was forced to
expend a large amount of money, leav
ing a deficit in the treasury, Mr. Da
vis then quoted tbe rates of niilla;;o
levied in certain school districts in
this county which compare with the
wealth of the Lackawanna school dis
trict. For the year 1803 thefollowiug as
sessments were imde iu Cirbondale
township, 31 miles; ArchbalJ. 18 miles:
Eimhurst, 20 miles; Olyyuaut, 22
miles; Winton, 20 miles. This year
the millage of Lackawanna township
will debut 18 miles. Martin Mc
Donough, John J. Coyn, P. J. Mul
herin, Owen Connolly, Thomas King.
Peter Mullen, Patrick Higgini. Thomas
Sullivan and Griffith T. Davis expressed
views on tbe subject and a matron
was then made to appoint a committee
to examine into the matter and report
at tbe next meeting of citizens, whicb
is to be called when tbe committee is
ready to report.
The following committee was ap
pointed: John J. Coyne. Frank; Toole,
John T. Brown, Martin MoDonough,
John Ejan, Owen Connolly, John
Kelly. The committee on resolution
presented the following report:
Whereas, It has been recently decided by
tbe school board of Lackuwanua town
ship to erect a now school ut Moosic, and
Whereas, It Is the sense of a majority of
the citizens of Bald towuship and even a
large portion of tho resident citizens of
Moosic, as shown by their late petition to
tho board in opposition to this measure,
that either no new school is necessary at
all in that place or should any additional
ichool room be needed tbe contemplated
bnilding is so out of all proportion iu the
dimensions and cost to the possible needs
of the case that its unoccupied rooms
would serve only as a standing monument
to our folly and reckless extravagance;
therefore be it
Resolved, That we place on record onr
unqualified condemnation of this proposed
recaless expenditure of this townships
money, and that two at a time, and under
the pretext of economy, the school terms
has been abriged and the schools closed a
month beyond the usual time, and educa
tion of our children eutirely neglected for
three long months; therefore, bo it fnrther
Resolved, That we at this meeting exert
oursolves to frustrate this design of burd
ening the taxpayers with this enormous
and needless expenditure.

While a train of cars were standing at
the Lehigh Valley depot last evening one
of the cars was discovered to oe on
fire. It was loaded with powder and
oil, and in n few minutes was a aneth
ing mass of fl-tme. An nlarin of fire
was turned in irom box 45, and the
several companies responded promptly.
The flames were subdued with much
effort, not however before the car and
Its contents were reduced to ashes.
George Drnry, son of William Drury,
was burned about the face with the hot
oil. How the fire originated is a mys
tery. The supposition is that it was
due to influmable combustion.
John Riley, aged about 17 yearn, was

eveniug, suffering with terriblo In
juries, He was employed as a driver
in Hei.lleberg colliery, No. 2. Lehigh
Valley Coal company. W hile his mule,
was pulling a car he nttimpted to ar
range tbe harness, but slipped and fell
under the wheels of the car. His most
serious injuries are about tbe
lower portion of tbe abdomen,
and they are of tuoh a nature
as to call for a consultation of the
physicians. Tbe consultation was beld
yesterday, Drs. Bevan, McFadden,
Hnrtman and Underwood were present
together with Resident Physician Mc
Keawen. After removing the injured
parts, whicb was found necessary, the
wounds were dressed and the sufferer
made as comfortable a possible under
the circumstances. Unless a second
hemorrhage occurs, the physicians
say there is good reason to hope he will
recover.
