TIIE SCEANTON TOIBUNE MONDAY MORNING, JULY 30, 1894. 7 GENERAL NEWS OF Tbe following Information in rela tion to tbe CoUbrook furnaces at Corn wall, now under tbe control of tbe Lackawanna Iron and Steal company, is noted In tb Lebanon Neva: "The work of enlarging tbe capaolty for the torage of coke it now in proems, and twelre pien bare already Wen com menoed witU more to follow, uutil tha length of almost a square hasbsen cov ered. Tbe atones removed by tbe raz ing to . tbe ground of tbe unfinished machine abop are being uaed for tbe erection of tbe abutments. Tbe plana for tbe enlargement of the Cornwall nntbracite furnaces, at Cornwall, are la course of preparation. The work of roasting ere at Colebrook bus been found too alow and tbe eight roasters at Cornwall anthruclte fnrtmces will be used to prepare tbe 9,000 tons of Cornwall ore for shipment to Scran ton. Tbe purpose of these 5,000 tons of Cornwall ore to be shipped to Scranton is to experiment with one of tbe furnaces of tbe com pnny at that place. If tbe or) can be U8"d exclusively for that purpose it will be-done and regular shipments m ml to Scranton for that purpose. Both fnroMCxs at Colebrook are now making a flue grade of iron. No. 1 1 furnishing on tin average 105 tons a day and No. 2, seventy tons. The de mand for iron bus bscotue very urgent from Sera-ton and it, is with this view tbut operations at the Cornwall an thracite furnaces, have commeneed Tbe shipment of iron produced ut both Colebrook furnaces to Scranton is made regularly, and tbe reception of coke is of daily occurrence. Tbe number of men employed has been increased." The Parrieh Coal company as we le&rn from tbe Wilkes-Barre Record. is now working two gang wuys aud two airways trout tbe bottom of tbe recent ly re-opened Buttonwood shaft, but as yet Is compelled to stock tbe coal, hav ing no way to ship it. Tbe company has erected mammoth breaker, with tnachiuery of the latest device for the preparation of coal. The breaker Is completed and siding Is being laid from tbe in w branch of tbn Central Railroad of New Jersey tbut is beiug construct ed by Burke Brothers from the maiu Hue cresting of tbe Lbigb Vulley rail road. Workmen are at present laying tbe tracks Ou tbe other purls of the new branch and sidings. When the new Uenker starts it will give employ ment lo 200 men aud boys, and the new Tilings of Buttonwood will be alive with a hive of busy workers and busi ness places. The Pennsylvania rail road will, at an early date, erect a new depot. Tbe Traction bus already built a depot on the line, one fourth oC a mile from the colliery. The general super intendent of it new colliery is Thomas R. Evans, of Plj month, Inside foreinau William PriteuurJ, ou.side foreman Jlerritt Fredrick. Tbe engineers who ure handling tbe throttle of hoisting engines ure StepbeuEuiuuuel aud Evan II. Thomas. A hundred couipauy bouses, besides several ofihes, will be shortly erects I. The shaft begu.) on tbe Delaware, Litckawauua aud Western company's Hanover tract two jours ogo by Pr- kins, Moses & Pugli, is now down 00 feet and has putsed tbrongb tbe Balti more und Hose veins ani ttiey iutuil sinking 100 feet further to tbe Rid Ash vein, Tbe engines are of modern tit sign and ure already set in place permanently, ine lumber is already on tbe ground to erect the breaker, which will bo ns large, if not larger, than auy yt erected in tbe valley. Ou tuo hill, third of a mile nearer Nun ticoke, another shaft is b'in sunk uud is known as the Auchinclose. The contract for sinking has, says the Wilkes-Barre Record, been let to Con tractor Edwin Rtfi-s, of Scranton. It U now cunk TOO feet, but ut present the operations are suspended in order to concrete the shaft, and n force of men is now engaged in completing tbut work. When this is completed t'.iu sinking will b continued nud will go down another S00 feet, when it is thought the veins now worked by the Susquehanna Coal coiupniy will be readied. The Delaware, L;ickavuuoa and Western has laid oat its land in the luigbborhood of tbe Auobinclose inti.e into streets, and Market street, Nuutlcoke, hHS been estenit-d to the works, three-fourths of mile distant. The Delaware, Lackawanna and West em Conl comp my has built h line of railroad xciusively for the shipment of this conl. The general superintend ent of these operations is William Carey. Last vent's coal prodnction in Ohio was 14,823. 097 tons over the previous j eur. In 50 wines, 2 553 074 tuns Were mined by machine, or !U:J.Q04 tous more than lust year. Tweiily-eigai thousand night hundred, aud tvu persons fuuu.1 employment in and abont ttu miuss of the state; of these 19 l'J7 were piuk mi ners, 807 machine meu, 2. 537 were shooters and loaders aftsr the mucliltua and 0,347 were dar bunds employed in side uud out of tbe uiluea. Th- aver age time worked Is givon as 171 U.ty?, which is a loss of 20 iluys us compared with 1892. This indicates an average duily production to each pick miner of 8 tons and 1,800 pounds. It will also be seen thai the average daily produc tion of the mines of the state was 83, 219 tons, which is an increase of 0,002 compared with the preceding yeur. Had this ratio been maintained aud the mines been worked lull tira, tlieout Mit of the state wonld have exceeded 20.000,000. One huudred and sven uhv mines have been opened, 40 re mtined suspeudsd aud 03 havs eithor been worked out or abandoned. Three hundred and twenty-seven accidents occurred to the employes in and about tbe mines during the year. Of this number, 81 resulted fatally, 82 were in conl mines, 1 la an iron ore mine and 1 In afire oUy mine. There wore 403, 873 tous of coal miued to each life lost. Tli prodostion of iron ore is given at 69.220 tons, which is tbe lowest of any year wltb tbt exception of 1801, when it dropped to 67,984 tons. Tbe Red Ash Coal company Is pre paring to inaugurate novel experi ment at its mines near the mountain road leading to Ltnrel Run, There are already two breakers, and a third Is now being constructed for the pur pose of preparing tbe bony coal for market When the coal is taken from tbe mines the bony or slsty coal is put to one side and has heretofore been practically useless. The Red Ash Coal company has conceived the idea that this if broken up into tbe proper sizes will be almost as good as pure eoal for team -producing purposes and experi ments have proven that their idea is correct. So It is tbe intention to take tbe bony ooal from tbe mines and tbe rofuss from tha two other breakers and break it np to smaller tzi and place it upon tbe market. The breaker will have a capacity of four or five hundred tone day. The tizsi are rather larger INDUSTRIES than buokwbeat and pea and ti e samples seeu by Wilkai-Birrs Re cord muo in the office of tbe Red Ash Coal company, show the pieces to bi composed of a good amount of coil. it tbe experiment is successiui anoum irre.t sonrc of revenue will bo opjuad up for mine owners and thousands of tons of what is now couituereJ reiuie inattsr aud wasted on the culm dump will find a market. Experiments havi shown that three sizs of bony coal burn freelv and province almost as much beat'as tbe ordinary coil. The breaker was began the first of liny aud will be completed about Septembur. It is uow almost under roof. The contract has been let to uo contractor, but the Rad Ash Coal couipmy took advantage of the reoentdeprisjiou in the coal trade to give its own men employment uud they have been pluoud upon the structure. The machinery is beiug mado by the Yuloan Iron works, of Wilkes-Bme. There will bs one pair of 40 by inch crusher rolls, one pair 21 by 30 inch prepare ! rolls, cue main screen 9 feet by 0 inches by 9 feet, oue counter screen 4 feet by 6 inches by 15 feet, oue set 13 inch by 10 inch by 30 feet elevators, oue 4 by 10 inch conveyor with head and foot shafts, etc., two sets adjust able dump bars 4 foot long by b feet wide, 8 chute gates 11 by 21 "iachoj, uud one engine 10 by 13 iuches. The breaker will be iu operation some time In September, Mixon Industrial Notes: Coxo Bros, it Co. will erect a now nud improved boiler house at Derringer. Thes) boilers will be fitted with Uio StocUtr grates. A circular lias been issue 1 by President Kimball, of the Norfolk and Western rail road, informing the individual operators of the Pocahontas coal fields that up to Aug. 1 the compuuy will pay 7i cents u ton for coul at the minus, uud ufier tuut date 70 cents.
