Staltz took his turn at the willow arid
Jack Fiio was kind enough to hit him
with a bell. G.'ork'ie trotted to first
and Little Willie Maasey next appeared
at the plate with his farorite chunk of
oak in his brawny hands. The third
ball pitelied just suited ilassey and he
met it with terrific force. It started
straight for the center field fenca and
cleared it as gracefully as a bird, land
ing ia the potato garden Deyoad.

brellas were waved in the air, fire
crackers were discharged and a shower
of silver eolns rained from the grand
stand on Massey's head.
CEOWDID ON THB FIELD.
From the bleachers and field, hun
dreds nf spectators rushed in and
crowded around 'he player, seeking an
opportunity to grasp his hand. It was
five, minutes before anything like order
could be restored and the field cleared,
so that play could be resumed.
Massey's hit that aavsil the game

of base ball in Scranton.

The playing, with one or two excep
tions, was as sharp and clean ns has
ever been seen in the city. Both clubs
were straining every nerve to win, for
Ilazleton is anxious to finish in ssoond
place and Scranton In fourth. A do
feat to either meant that they would
bave to be contented with a lownr
place. Fee and Hodson were the pitch
ers. It was their battle throughout,
and Hodson bad the best of it. Ho
was found for only five singles, whrte
Fee was touched up for a home run, a
double and seven singles. Luck seemed
to be against Scranton. Although we
had two singles in the first and a single
and a double in the seeond, we wr un
able to scoro on them. Failure to sacrl
fioe cn the part of our players Is the main
reason why we CAUie so dangerously
close to defoat.
DETAILS OF TUB GAME
In the first Hogan struck out, Wetzel
singled, Patchvn fieldd out to Jordan
and Rogers, after making a base bit,
was put out going to second for inter
ins: with the ball.
Phelan opened the aeoond with a
single and Staltz drove the ball to First
Baseman Clark, who retired Phelaa and
Stalti without assistance. Mussey
made a double and Westluke died on a
fly to Jordan in right.
The men went out in one, 'two, three
order .hi the third and fourth. Mwssey
filed out toMoran in the fifth, West
lake reaohed first on Kothermel's error
and Hodson was put out on a fly to
Clark. Hngan drove tbe ball into deep
left and Westlaka was retired while
trying to make third on tbe hit.
WetZ'l got a base oq' ball in the
sixth, Patcnen filed out to Clark,
Rogers went to first on bails and Pbelan
and btalta were retired on flies to Coa
roy ud Clark. In the seventh Ussey,
Westluke end Hodson went out on flies
to Ely, Moran and Clark, Hogan ex
pired through a fly to Ely ia the eighth
and We I til wu again given a base on
balls.. Patchen popped up a fly which
Jordan captured and threw Wetzol out
at first.
That eventful ninth opened with
Rogers at the bat. He Had out to
Rothermel and Phetnn was retired
from Rjthermel to Clark. Stalls was
hit by the pitcher and Mssaey's home
run followed. Westlake singled and
on a hit of similar dimensions by Hod
sou, Westlake scored, Hogan ilied out
to Clark.

Time With Hazleton.
The afternoon game resulted in an
other victory for Scranton, but Mr.
Westlake does not dessrve any credit
for it.
Tom Flansghan pitched a splendid
game and if Westlake had not made so
many blue plays the Uazlotons might
have been shut out. Flanaghan kept
the hits well scattered and kept cool at
stages when coolness was required.
Moran, the crack center fielder sawed
the air a number of times during the
game. Up to the sixth inning Jordan
pitched a Kreat gam) bnt in the sixth
wbile Scranton was at the bat tbe club
that represents tue people who are
clamoring for a new county went to
smash and Scranton scored eight runs
before tbe side wns retired.
At the wind up of tbe sixth Jorlau
was bit ou tie pitching arm by a bit
ted ball and Jack Fee went in the box
and flushed the garae. Fee pitehed
in great form in the morning gnnn but
in the afternoon be was butted bard.
Five runs were procured by "onr cats"
off his delivery in the tiire innings.
