Scranton aud the Olyphant Browns. It
was a game abounding in rocky, yellow
play, bad judgment, foolish baserun
tiing, wild throws and everything that
goes to make tip a gnms that is a dis
graoe to the national pastime. Potner
and Bchlaeger were in the points for
the Browns and Nolan and Gillespie for
the business men. Of the two. Nolan
was by far th most effective, giving
the heavy hlttors of the Browns but six
bits, while Posntr was touohed np for
a beautiful fonrtaon, every on of wl lob

ter the third inning when the business
men with three hits, one of which wes
a home run by K that plied, np three

in it. Time after time they would get
men on bases with good cluuc-is to

leastd pitcher, Nolan, they failed to
score. The first luge play of Griffiths,
of the Browns, was a revelation to th
Olypbant people. That generally steady
player is credited with no less than

Outside of the pitching by Nolan the
only redeeming feature of the whole

local directors have determined on

Manager Kunche, of Syracuse, was
iu the city all day yeaterday, but would
say little about bis miision Here, or

league business. He expressed the
opinion last uight that the Biugbamlon
cub would uot last uutil July 1 He
would like to see Scrauton iu the
league.
l'tecident Patrick Powers, of the
Eastvru league, was expected in the
city last uight to consult with the local
directors ou the subject of taking an
Eastern league franchise, but did not
appeur, nor gtiad any message bseu re
ceived from him up to a late hour.
If Scrauton can go iuto the Eisturn
leagns uuemcuuibered by the Bing
bamton's percentage and is also given
some assistance in the way o utreugth
eniug lb olab, tho stockholders of the
Scrauton club are in favor of making
the change. Wilkes-Barre would lik u
very much to see Scrautou in the East
ern league.
The rnmor that Scranton wonld ac
cept a franchiss in the Eastern league
has caused much comment in State
league cities, and The Tribune was
queried last night several times by pa
pers in State league cities as to the
truth of the rumor.
Several weJks ago tho Scrauton club
would have been owued and controlled
by au aggregation of representative
local business men, including several
well known mine operators, lawyers
and mercbauts if the present stock
holders had asked a more reasonable
pries for their stock. Harry P. Simp
sou has conctived the idtu that with
proper munagt ment, a modern park
and membership in the Essteru league
the club repres.-utlug Scrauton would
prove a paying investment.
An option was obtained on tbs John
son lake propsrty from the Lackawanna
Iron and Steel romp my aud the club's
stockholders requested to name a price
for their stock. The figure set by the
holders was $300 psr Bhiire, which sum
Mr. Simpson uud his friends refused to

ing to pay over double this sum, but
stopped negotiations when the ficti
tious valuo was mentioned.
Mr. Simpson said to a Triuune re

cure the franchiso of the Bingharnton
or Syracuse club or some other E istern
league representation, merge the Scrau
ton players and from the two clubs
retain a winning team, We would
then enter the Eistern league and are
egotistical enough to think we could
manage to make money and at tho same
time merit the public's snpport.
'"We proposed ereotiug a modern
grnnd stand and to put the sport in this
city on such a level that it would be
appreciated by the better olement. In
addition we intended to equip tho park
witn a track, field, and all tho appur
tenances of a complete utblattiu ground
where tournaments, bicycl-j rac;s and
athletic contests of all kinds could be
held.
"The idea of establishing such a p irk
has not been given np, neither has the
project of gaining oontrol of the Scran
ton Base Ball club been relinquished.
However, we shall not piy a ficticious
price for the stock."
It is understood on the best of au
thority that Pat Powers has been ap
proached iu tho interest of Mr. Simp
son and his collengnes and has signi
fied his willingness to further their
plans to nny extent which lies In bis
power. Whatever may be the out
come of tho various Ideas and projects

ngor Billin Barnie of that clnb has
offered $500 for him. Yesterday he
telegraphed the directors of the Scran
ton clnb that he would arrived in the

confrenc with the Scranton directors
on the subjeot.
He failed to arrive at that honr but
will undoubtedly be here this morning.
It is very probable that Hodson will
be sold and Pitcher Wallace of Frank
lin and Pitcher Black now in this city
