A domestic altercation which might
have resulted in a tragedy and which
did bring a brutal husband next door
to a coat of tar and feathers, wu en
acted on West Market street Tuesday.
Frank Moran and his wife roceutly
moved from Hyde Park into oue of tho
houses owned by W. 13. Chriitmas.
Their domestic life had been anything
but pleasant and during a quarral over
a trivial matter while at dinner Moran
seized a kettle of boiling water from
the stove and began pouring the scald
ing fluid upon the defenceless woman.
Too wife's shrieks of agony and ter
ror soon brought a crowd of persons
upon tho scene and when they coin
prehondod what a fiendish act Moran
had performed thoy suggested a coat of
tar and feathers ns a punishment.
Wiser counsel prevailed among u few,
and Morui was handed over to the po
lice. Meanwhile the sufferiiigs ol Airs.
Moran were intouse and pitiful; the

Ross and Common Councilman Golden,
both of the First ward, has caused con
sidfTable discussion and some umuso

Mr. Rons recontly hired a number of
Hungarians to do aoma grading ou
North Main avenue. When the work
wns completed and t3e pay rolls were
taken to Mr. Golden for hu signature,
the common couuciliD.au refused to
sign them. Ilia excuse is that the tax
payers are idle and need work.
It does not appear from Mr Golden's
standpoint whether the Hungarians
are taxpayers or not, nor whsther or
not tho men are entitled to piy for
honest labor properly psrforini'l. Any
how, it's a pretty modal and Mr. Gul
den has assumed a what-are you-'oing-to-do-about-it
attitu le, whila the

prehension after a brief psriod. Hi
admitted hit guilt and was released
aftur he had returned the money.

afternoon in the arbitration room.
Tiie voters of the old Twelfth were
out in forco but expressed themselves
as far from pleased at the idea of hav
ing to abandon tlifir usual occupations
and appear before a commissioner to
prove that they hud u right to cast a
vote at the election last February.
Henry W. Coylo and James Mmley
were the only parties to the contest
present. Thoy occupied seats at the
tables with their Attorneys and when
not consulting with them, glared at
each other.

excited roars of laughter by his humor

Howell ns a young officer in search of
a wife. Miss Helen Thayer as the her
oine, captured the young officer very
successfully und to the entire satisfac
tion of her admirers. Miss May Fis
her showed great aptitude for tier part

Miss Mumie Ebsinger entered splendid
ly into the spirit of her role of Arabella

Maud Fisher carried out the "roman

The entertainment was promoted by
the Young Ladies' guild and great
credit is due for the general arrange

for the comfort of the visitors in the

Since the first of the current month
the breaker of the Meadow Brook col
lery of William Connell & Co. has been
shut down. The shaft, however, is
kept rnnning, the coal mined in it be
ing sent to the Nntional breaker. For
some time pust tho amount of coal
mined in the different woikins of the
company has been far less than would
warrant the operations of the two
breakers. The National breaker is pat
terned after the most improved style
and Its capacity iH sufficient to prepare
a large tonnage. There has 1-eon no
definite policy settled by the laaunge
mvnt in regard to the future of the
Meadow Brook breaker. The structure
is old and in need of repairs, ud be
fore u reeuino it will be necessary to
overhaul it thoroughly.
There has uot been any chauite made
to any extent in the forera in. Malach
Coyne, who spent his time botween
both breakers as outside tnperlndent,
simply will be Jr quired to look after
one plaut less. Frank Sleppy, outside
foreman at tho National colliery, has
been reduced to the ranks witn the
machinists guog. Nearly all of the
workmen at tho abandoned breaker
have been giveti employment ut the
