Qioui Pickering agnin.it the Lthlgk
and Wilkes-Bnrre Coal company, the
jury returned a verdict awsrdnip; the
plaintiff $2"00 This case was one of
uncommon importance, ami was fol
lowed with koeu interest by coal men
generally. Mr. Pickering sought com
pensation on account of the coal dust
nrisiug from the Lunco brouker in i'ly
month, which is in close proximity to
his residence. Piukering whs repres
ented by Attorneys Bennett nnd Mc
Grahrea. Attorneys Palmer and Mc
Clintock appeared for the company.
Several otlior cases of a like natnro are

the present dmt fauniug process and

O.ie of the most indefatigable work
ers in this city, among thosw intorested
in the anthracite trade, is A. F. L iw,
secretary nnd treasurer of the business
interests of Nimpio.'i & VVatklus. To
have intimate supervision of many of
the details connected with tho manage
ment of seven prosp-rons collieries,
said by experts to bj among the best

I ring to that tusk incessant attention
for eight yours is the record made by
Mr. Law; and in tho opinion of his
friends it fully entitles him to the brief
vacation which he proposes to tak- ten
days honce, in tho form of a journey
across the water. Mr. Law will pass a
scant fortnight in Loudon, and will
then return. The main purpose of his
voyage is to sniff tho ionic ooonn breezi
nud forget, for a time, lusiness cares
which have for eiht yous deprived
him of any respite.
The fact has developed that the an
thrucite sales agents held an im
promptu meoting a few days ago and
decided to increase prodnctiou during
the second half of the present month
from 50 to 70 per cent., so as to average
00 per cent, for the month, Reliable
authorities say that the coal which is
being mlued is not goitig into stock,
but is being consumed by interests
which heretofore burned soft coal. It
is said that the month's r turns will
show that stocks have decreased rather
than increased The sales agents meet
again tomorrow. The general opinion
is that prices will bo advanced 'Jo cents
per ton.
There is a possibility that tho Le
high canal, which wss severely injured
by tho recent Hoods, may be abandoned.
To repair it will cost a Urge sum ;
i:i .ny Bay larger than the canal is
worth lis a means of revenue to the Le
high Coal and Navigation oompauy. It
is recalled as a significant cirtmnstatic
that alter the frejhot of 1802 that part
of the canal from White Haven to
East Muucb. Chunk" wns abandoned.
Co il shipped by rail is a better revenue
linker than coal shipped by boat; and
the Lehigh Coal and Navigation o tn
p;iny will not, it is believed, go to (jreat
pains to preserve tho water way which
bears its name.
Trouble is beinc i xperienced in Phil
adelphia to gt ati adequate supply of
bituminous coal. Steamship companies
are importing coal from Wova Scotia,
which adds about a dollar to the ordin
ary prices. West Virginia coal, which
usually sells for $2.75, has brought as
high us $5 a ton. Anthracite coal is
expected to risi in price this week,
both on account of the floods aud also
because of the scarcity of bituminous
coal. Tho Pocnhontas operators nre
the only ones that have any soft ceal
and they nre saving It for their own
trade. Very little Poeoliontas coal
reaches tho Philadelphia market on ac
count of tho freight ohargoi. It is
handled by the Norfolk and WeHtorn
and is loaded on vessels at Norfolk for
direct shipment to New England.
Many Philndelphians who have been
using bituminous coal are now using
anthracite, particularly glass and
chemical manufacturers.
TJi.dir the pains taking sup
ervision of Richard P. Roth
well, the Engineering and Min
ing Journal has just compiled the only
complete and thoroughly accurate tat le
of statistics now available showin or t!io
dimensions and growth of the mineral
industry in the United States during
the years 1802 and 1893 The labor in
volved in such a compilation aud the
nicety of calculation required to bring
out its varied and nnmerous points of
popular interest are poorly understood
and for that reason little appreciated
by the average reader. Those who
have labored in that direction will un
derstand properly, value and marvel at
the efficiency of Mr. Rothwsll's work.
The cempilotion demonstrates, among
other tilings, thnt during the year 1803,
American mineral and metal produc
tion depreciated in value to the extent
of $79,000,000. The mineral production
alone, although almost one-third
greater in valne than the metal pro
duct, decreased one-half as much. Of
tho total decrease, over $3 J, 000,000 was
In the decreased production nud shrink
age of values in pig iron; $9,000,000
was in coke And $0,000,000 in bitumin
ous coal , both of which were largely
due to the decline In pig iron produc-
In silver the decrease In value amount
od to $0,000,000. In but few cases was
there any increase Anthracite coal
gnined $4,000,000 in value, thus partly
offsetting the decline in bituminous,
and gold increased $3,010,000.
The growth of the mineral industry
of the United States, as indicated in
ih's compilation, has been so rapid as
to be wholly beyond comparison with
any other nation. Fifty years ago this
country began to take the rank as one
of the important producers. In twenty
years it had won a petition among the
leading nations, and now it not only
excels all others, but the value
of its produet is almost is
great as the value of the com
bined output of Great Britain, France
and Germany. In 1801 the United
States with an output of 22,800,000
metric tons stood third among tho col
producing nations, Great Britain lead
ing with over 90.000,000 tons, Ger
many 20.000.000 In the thirty years
since that time Great Britain has a lit
tle more than doubled its output,
Germany has trebled, but the Uuited
States has increased eight times and
produces now almost as much as Ger
many And All the rest of the world
taken together, excepting only Great
Britain. In the production of pig iron
our growth hn besn even more re
markable. I'i 1805 the pig producing
countries ranked with Great Britain
first, then France, Germany and the
United States; Great Britain alone pro
ducing almost six times as muoh as
the United States. But in 1892 the
Uuited States output was more than
eleven times ai much as thirty years

before, nnd almost half again ns much
as Groat Britain; as much as Germany,

Minor Industrial Notes:

Tho Central Railroad company coal
yards nt Mauch Chunk were never as
empty of loaded coal cars as they aro at

the mines and ns fast as it comes it is sent
down the road.
