Richard Burnett died last evening
snortly before midnight, after a week's
illness. Deceased was about to years
of age ami is survived by her husband
and light children. The funeral will
be held on Saturday morning. A re.
qniem mass will be celebrated in St
Hose ehurch. Interment will be made
in St. Rose cemutery.
Rev. Gilbert Reid will addrele an
audience in the Presbyterian church
tomorrow (Friday) evening.
The trout season will oDen in the
Northeastern district of this state on
the 13th of this month.
W. B. Gritman, of the Leader, left
this morning via. Ontario and West
ern railroad for a trip to New York
city.
The funeral of the late Mrs. Peter
Sheridan was held this afternoon at 3
o'clock from her late home on Gordon
nvenue. Services wore held in St.
Rose's church. Interment was made
in St. Rose csinetery.
The regular monthly literary enter
tainment of the F.pworth league will
occur tomorrow (Friday) evening in
the Methodist ehapel and the following
programme will be carried out: Piano
solo, Frank Couch; recitation, Miss
Mattie Hards; vocal qnartette, Mieses
Miller and berry and Messrs. Wilson
and Frank Stephens; piano duet, Mieses
Herring and Corby. The principal
feature of the evening will be an ad
dress by Rev. W. L. Thorpe.
Last evening at o'clock at the home
of the bride's parents on liulmont street
Miss Sarah A. Bateridge and Lawrence
K. Henry were united in marriage by
Rev. Jepson, pastor of the Baptist tab

York, from which institution she gained
tne degree of P. H. D. She will have
charge of the class in history, of liter
ature, rhetoric and grammer.
Professor Bible will lecture at the
Saturday session of the White Haven
Teachers' Local institute on educational

every Wednesday at 10 a. in at the of
fice of Dr. N. C. Miller.
John Black has moved his family
from Ashley to this place, and is now
occupying the Davis house on Sarah
street.
At the meeting of the stockholders of
the Stroudsburg and Bushkill Tele
phone company held yesterday in the
Indian (jueeu hotel it was decided to
rent a central office. Just as soon us
the situation of the central office is de
cided upon a twitch board and other
appliances will be put in. The com
pany have not yet made arrangements
with any company for telephones,
though it is expected that a choice will
he made between the Manhattan or
Unger companies.
A traveling salesman named Fin
nerty, from Scranton, while returning
to E ist Stroudsburg at an early hour
this morning was halted by two men
near the Iron bridge, who asked him
if he had any money. Mr. Finnerty.
in speaking of the occurrence, said he
had quite a sum of money in his pos
session as well as other valuables. He
described tbe men as being short aud
tall and wote huge beards.
Tbe Monroe cjunty jail is now empty,
the last prisoner .confined within its
walls was a colored man named Wil
li in Brooks.
A handsome new delivery wagon has
jut been received by Mnsselman and
Custard, of the Stroudsburg Steatu
laundry, from the wagou works of
Wilkinson & Co,, of Newburg, N. Y.
Albert E. Eckert will open bis new
store opposite the depot at East
Stroudsburg tonight.
An enjoyable social was held in the
residence of Mrs Kingmaster on Main

ABOHBaLD, Pa., April 5 -The sus
pense as to the postmastership of this
place was ended yesterday when James
O'Rouke was appointed by the authori
ties at Washington. Aside from the
brief announcement in the papers this
morning thar has been little informa
tion learned since. Mr. O'Rouke's ap
pointment is a reward for faithful ser
vice to the Democratic party and since
he merits it everyone should bo satis
fied. The retiring postmaster, Mr. T.
P. Cosgrove, was a competent aud
careful official and gave the people
very good service. 1 here is no doubt
whatever but that the sune satisfac
tion will be given by Mr. O'Rouke.
Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Gilroy called in
Scranton today.
The remains of the late Mrs. John
Stiovlin, who died on Monday evening,
were laid to rent in the Catholic ceme
tery this morning. A requiem mass
was solemnized in bt. 1 homes church
by Rev Dr. Lucas at 10 o'clock, the
services being largely attonded. The
cortege then proceeded to the ceme
tery. The ball bearers wore Thomas
Padden, John Kearney, Patrick Burke,
Thaddeus Burke, Thomas Mullen and
Patrick Lynn.
The marriage of John Lorenz, of
Scranton, formerly of this place, to
Miss Mary Craft, daughter of Mer
chant Peter Craft, is announced to take
pIsco shortly.
The tonnage sf No 5 mine of the
Dslaware aud Hudson company, for
the past month is the greatest, consid
ering the number of days worked, in
the history of the ompuUV in this
borough. The average daily output for
the period in question was about 1,HU0
tons.
Rev. Mr. Shaw, of Voorhesville, will
conduct services at the Presbyterian
church on Sunday next.
