ENUNCIATION IN SINGING.
There Is it Marked Defteleaty In This Ke
spent Amuiig Must Vocalists.
Is there any substantial reason why a
singer should not pronounce the text of
a song welU A writer in The Etudesays:
Personally 1 do not believe then is,
though professor! of risgfog hare tried
to oonrinOB me that in many ciuses tin!
diffioultiei are insuporabln. Tho whole
trouble, it sconis to mo, is with tin) po
sition of tin- larynx. 1 am not u tetohet
of Hinging, and 1 do not presume to in
struct those who uro teachers. I merely
offer as a suggestion nml fruitful subject
of study tin- possibility of overcoming
nil laryngeal obstacles to a clear and in
tel&gible pronunciation of tho vowels.
1 am aware that the subject is receiving
attention, 1 know that some teachers
think they have solved the problem, 1
sincerely hope tin y have, but I hare not
yet met with tin- practioal results of the
solution. My duties bring mn into the
pretence of many public singers, young
and old, and I reiterate that tin- state ot
the mi of pronunciation among our na
tive lingers is inoal dltcour ging,
Bw Minie reason these -alists seem
to have little nr Imported knowledge ol
the accepted methods of modifying thote
rowel sounds which are diametrically
Opposed to the position of the larynx ill
certain registers as, for instance, the u
sound in the upper or the en sound iu
the lower register. They do not modify)
they radically change, And they am so
cni i less and slovenly with their conso
nant! that tin- words become wholly un
intelligible. It is extremely common to
liear n tenor pronounce "day" "duh," if
it chances to come on a note above hii
middle register, Now, when the letter
d is not clearly enunciated, the word be
comes "ub," which is simple gibberish,
If ii is possible for a German to enun
ciate distinctly, it is pottibleforan Amer
ican. Uur language presents lei graver
difficulties in t'ne singer than that of the
fatherland, Vet it was always a delight
to mo to mark how clearly the German
text fell from the lipt of such good sing
ers us Fischer and Leliiuann. The same
admirable clearness of diction is a nota
ble feature of the singing of Jean de
Reizke, I suspect that our deficiency in
this matter is barely due to the insiitli
cient training of our singers, who arc
not willing to sacrifice the necessary
yens to u complete mattery of all parts
of their art. But I inspect alto that some
vocal teachers do not give as much at
tention to this in, titer as tin y might.
