BATTLE WITH POSTOFFICE TH IEVES.
Fifteen Shots Exchanged and a Danville
Officer Fatally Injured.
Pperial to the yrrnntoii Tribune.
Danville. Jan. 17. A desperate at
tempt was made last uigut to rob the
postoffice at this place by a gang of pro
fessional thieves. About 2 o'clock the
night watchman, Rishell, saw a man
in front of the postoffice with a mask
on and a revolver in his hand. Taking
in the situation he at once went for
help, and after securing two others
they surrounded the postoffice and de
manded tbe thieves to surrender, when
they were fired on In front by the two
in the office and from behind by three
confederates who were out side guard
ing. At least fifteen shots wert unchanged ;
one striking Polieemau Van Gilder in
the abdomen, from the elf jets of which
he cannot recover, and another pass
ing through the hat of the nightwatch
man. However, none of the thieves
were hit and they all made good their
-scape. No clow was left as to who
the robbers were, bnt it is generally
supposed from the skill they showed
thtt tliev are professionals.- Two holes
were bored In the safe and charged
with dynamite and all the cracks
stopped np with soup and putty.
