blighted love and bloodthirsty revenge.
Sepal, it appears, was a workman In
Naples, and while there met a jjirl
named Annie Villela, to Whom
he made love and wronged. Sepal 11 id
to America, and after a short time in
New York oamo on to this county. A
few days iifjo a strange woman arrived
at the mining village and inquired for

boarding house, She inquired min
utely into his habits, where ho worked
and what hours he was on duty. She

Sepal went to work that night as
usual, taking his lunoh in a tin bucket.
At 4 o'clock in the morning he returned
deadly sick. lie explained that directly
after eating his lunch he began to suf
fer with severe pains in his utomach
and made his way home as best
he could. A physician was sent
for, but before he arrived the un
fortunate man was dead. The physician
said there was every symptom of poi
soning. Friends of the man now be
lieve that the woman watched him go
to work, followed and sseint? a favor
able opportunity when he was mtkiug
his ronuds, poisoned his food She hat
disappeared and cannot be found.
This etory is very ingenious and
would also be highly important, if it
were true. It is, however, merely a

sive Savings association, held at their
rooms on William street, Monday
evening, the following officers were
elected for the ensuing term : Presi

P. McElhenny; directors, J. H. Mul
key, R. Hughes. F. P. Cosper, William
Williams, P. H Kelley and Thorn is
Bohan. The association numbers 260

ing fond. Up to date, 159 certificates
have been paid and canoelled.

INSURANCE COMPANY'S SUIT.
It Alleges Fraud In Oonnectlon with
William Lyons' Policy.
The United States Insurance com
pany bsgen suit in tqnity Monday
against William Lyons, W llliam Lyons,
jr., and E.T. Itutledge, charging the de
fendants with having secured a policy
on the life of William Lyons for several
thousand dollars about a year ago for
the purpose of defrauding the company.
The application for the policy
was of the mual character, stating
that the snl ijeot was in good health
and only 59 years old. The company
claims that the insured is 70 years of
age and that the son, who Bigned the
applieation, intended to collect the In
surance on the death or bis rather.
The company wishes to return the
amount paid (for the policy and have
the same cancelled.
County Detective Whalen was in
town last evening and .served the pa
pers in this case.

lecturer, will deliver his lecture on

ity," in the basement of the new St.
John's Catholic church on William

MlNOOKA, Pa., Jan. 10. This place
and vicinity havo been infested lately
with a contemptible lot of trampj, who
abide in shanties between here aud the
Glendale breaker. Their ida is to beg
during the day and terroriz) the quiet
inhabitants of Minooka during tbe
night, Last Monday evening while
William Gavin, a prominent shoe
maker, was preparing to retire, a pistol
shot rang out nnd a bullet crashed
through his window and cut a hole in
his hat, just grazing the scalp. If it
had not been that, he was in a stooping
position, owing to the fuel that he was
fixing the fire, he would have been
killed.
The only way we can obtain police
protection, is by beiag annexed to the
city.

munity. Although Chief of Police
Jerman is doing all he can under the
circumstances to rid tbe town of these
scamps and vagrant, it is yet an una
bated nnisance
Monday morning while severalyount;
girls were on their way to work in the
mills at South Scranton. they were at
tacked by tramps near the switch (from
the main line of tho Delaware, Lacka
wanna and Western to Taylor miues)
and pursued. One of their number,
Lizzie Davie, of Feltsville, was caught.
Her clothes Svere partly torn and she
was robbed of her dinner. This assault
has aroused such indignation that
tramps will be roughly handled here
after.
