while tho Schuylkill ration decreased

important events of tne year in connec

between the L thigh Valley Coal com
pany nud individual operators, the
purouaso by the Vauderbilt party of a
controlling interest of Lacka'vatna

coutiuniug its game of 'grab' in the

the year, but it at no time assumed
threatening proportions and the leerou
of harmonious action and co-operation
taught by President McLeod is likely
to bear more fruit as time passei. ,
Mr. McL?od strenuously insist.'
among his friends that he has been in
. no measure responsible for the sharp
speculative drive which sent new Eng
land to the boueyard and precipitaiod
the recent dramatic recivership. For
those sudden developments which
wrecked his plans and spoiled nil bis
bopl of a competing through line to
B.'ttou and the north, Air. McLeod,
according to Philadelphia advice,
holds P. H. Prince, of Boston, repons
i tile. The intimation is made by Mr.
McLeod's frletil that this man played
double game. The action of Mr.
Prince is assigned to the fact that he
was deprived ol the vice presidency of
the company, when Mr. Odell wan
sleeted to that position, with charge of
the operating department. The fact
that a large majority of tbo stock -holders
approve the lease of tbe New
York, New Euglaad aud Northern to
tbe New England is taken by Mr. Mc
Leod to indicate that they believe
there is r.o other way to niaka their
property valuable, aud, in eifact, is an
indorsement of his manag'-meDt a
management which, he declares, has
been from the start iu tbe best interest
of th security holdero. He is Inclined
to regard the extension of the New
England into New York, therefore, ae
likely. Meanwhile the receivership
may involve u good deul of litigation
that might have been avoided.
The board of direolors of the New
York, Luke Erie and Western railroad
revterduy iaiuod a circular to the
h.ildere of the second consolidated
mortgage bonds, suggesting a method
by which funis necessary for better
ment, expeiidituren and maturing ob
ligations of the road may be secured
Thy propose tocrtatea new mortgage,
having 100 years to rut: and bearing In
loiett at 5 per cent., into which will b
merged the present fecund consolidated
mortgage, the f united coupon bonds of
1&85, the prestnt income bond, tka
present reorganization first lien bonds
and the collateral trust bond. Drexel,
Morgan it Co., of New York, and J. S
Morgan e: Co.. of London, have agreed
lo assiet the directors iu carrying out
the plan. The new mortgage will
cover the property -of the New York,
Libit Erie and Western Railroad com
pany, including ttu leasehold of the
New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio rail
way, and tue capital stock of the Cbi
cogo and Erie Railroad company, thus
giving it control of the entire llue to
Chicago, nud will secure bonds limited
in amount to $70,01)0,001).
President Whitehead, of the New
York, Pennsylvania nud Ohio, nay : "It
la not true that Erie has modified the
lease of th New York, Pennsylvania
and Ohio. Erie is trying to modify it,
uml we have no objection to having it
modified, provided Erie will give us
security for what via give up. Erie
w.i ills us to give up $100,000 a year for
nothinir. The trouble with Erie is that
it owes too many harassing debts and,
mist pay loo much to lawyers to stave
them cff. It owes about eight
millions of small debts. It
ov8 o much lo director that
it cannot pny our rental money.
Therefore I propose to apply to the
I'ourts again for the payment due ns.
When I shall applv I cannot yetttate.'
As to the Erie plnn, President White
head said: "It in good eni.urh if the
bondholders are willing to put up 90
oent lor tne new bond in the propor
tion proposed. If they do not put np
tho money, their bonds will fall to a
much lower l'vel than they are became
of tho continued danger of default aud
