A MAN F 011111) 1111.111DIMED 1N TIM
SCHUYLICII,T,En.—On Saturday eve
ning, between 0 and 7 o'clock, the body
of a man was sepn floating in the Schuyl
kill, about three miles below the oity o ,
near Poplar Neck Bridge. Mr.-E. High,
residing near Poplar Neck Bend, pro
cured a skiff and brought the body td:
shore,witere it remained until yesterday
morning, when a jury was smith - med.
When the body of the man was found
his hands were tightly bound behind his
back and securely tied with a handker
chief; his face and mouth wore tied with
a long rod scarf, being wrapped twice
around, and pn his neck; below the oar,
a stab was found, made by a sharp in.
atruntent, supposed to have been a dag
ger, roSching in a 'great • distance, and of
Itself' ehough to produce death. The
body must have boon in tho water about
ono month,decomposition having already
taken place. Early en Sunday morning
the jury met and carefully examined the
body, but not being, able to idcnttfy the
man, they rendered a verdict that - ho
caine to his death "by violence at the
bands of some person or persons un
known to the jury.thi'r
The body was then placed in charge of
Mr. Henninger, undertaker, and brought
to the city', and placed in Mr. Henning
er's shop, wherolt was lying all day yes
tardily, up to 8 o'clok,k this s ,morning,
awaiting identification. The man was,
from all appearances, a (Orman, and
about 35 years of ago. Ito had reddish
hair. a black moustache and goatee,
which it seemed had been dyed. Flo had
on good clothing, dark coat, light, pants
and vest, woollen shirt, and good home
made boots.
—Mick) the above was In type, we learn
that the man's • name was 'Nis Peterson
Smith, of Pittsburg; aged 23 years, a
native of Denmark. He attempted to
commit suicide boar Reading, by stab
bing himself in the throat with a pen
knife, but he was taken to the Dispensa
ry, Whore he recovered. On the 27th of
February he wont away, by permission,
for a short time, and /1.9 ho never returned,
it was supposed ho committed suicide.
tie left at the Dispensary about $6121 in
money, a watch, a revolver, and other
articles. He said be had been robbed,
which Oallfied his attempt atlnfloide. His
clothing has. boon identified by Mr t Da
vid Levi, Steward of the Dispensary, who
also sho4Ved to his photograph, He had
a full face and rather a InOlaill3hOlY oast
of countenanee. The fact that his hands
were tied behind his back shows that he
could pet. have committed suicide, and
the- reason for his murder remains a
mystery.
