theofficers of the law in' the discharge of
their duties from

policemen and detectives have had much
trouble, on this account during the past
Year or two. One case occurred last
Sear, when tho notorious outlaw, Neal
heridan, made his escape on account of
the greediness of Gov. Goary'a speidal
policemen In Schuylkill county. Sheri
dan, had conitnitted several atrocious
outrages in Schuylkill county, and the
authorities there o f a reward for his
arrest. He left; b t after a time ado
his appearance In Reading. Although
he was not ;known to tho policemen of
this city; Our keen-eyed Chief, Capt. Mc-
Neil, and his efficient 'brae, at once
marked hhn as a simpletons character,.
and haVing heard of Sheridan, Chief
MoNdli telegraphed to'Pottsville for a
description of the criminal, holding him
self in readiness to arrest him if he
anar Ored to the description . Instead of
replying at Once, Heisler's policemen,
eager for the reward, dame to Reading to
arrest Sheridan themselves. The friends
