roads,
At first sight this bill may not appear
ohje!ctionable, •bat closer investigation
shows that it is " a snake in the grass"
that should be scotched and killed at
once.
In the first place, it authorizes the con•
Nolidation of corporations to an Indira.
cd extent. The injurious effect of such
measures has been already too severely
felt by the people at large. and any Furth
ef attempts at centralization should be
guarded against. •
In the second place, the bill is mdis•
tinet as to the limit of the powers and
the time for which they are conferred,
and hence is highly dangerous to the
business interests of all our people ox.
Coining those large corporations In whose
Interest tl►is bill was created.
, In the third place, the Wit grants the
sanction of the State to the swallowing
up of somil c o rporations by larger ones,
and they 'in turn by others still more
powerful, until in time the wholo.tnight
be absorbod and the entire business re•
,ferred to be controlled by 'one mammoth
corporation. Stich a contingenby rot•
dory it necessary that (hi) publicn'o'Ss
should at once denounce any suc h at
tempt to throw"tbe control of the prin
. cipal industrial interests of this State
into the bands'of one or more powerful
and greedy corporations, which only care
to enrich themselves, regardless of the
rights And prosperity, of tlie people gen.
evilly. ,
'We call upon our Senators and Repro•
sentativos . at Iforrisbarg to watch this
bill closely, and esposo its designs, so
that it may bo so effectually defeated that
mammoth corporations will see the inn.
Wily of further attempts to enslave the
people of this Commonwealth fur their

Aux CAM, Hayti, Feb. 17.—0 n my '
arrival hero last week I found that the
Picquets, a kind of guerrillas, who are in
favor ofSalna.e, had occupied dhe 'lleitis
andltilla in the rear of the city, and were
plying it with shot 'and shell at a fearful
rate. The President was in the harbor.
on board the Galatea, and waiting for hi.
gunboat, the .Salnave, to arrive before
commencing the bombardment from tile
sea. . I found everything in confusion,
and ,everybody in a statn of wild alarm.
Soon allertuy arrival; Mr. Hollister, the
American Minister, came into poet in the
United States ship•of-war Yantle, and
immediately visited Mr, N Long, the
American Consul., Mr. Do Long Is very
ill, and occupied the house and store of
Mr. Georgl) C. Brown, who is novi the
acting Consul' here, I - found in Mr.
• firowit's house at least 600 flaytien refu
gees, who were lodged and fed at his ex
pense. Their personal effects were piled
up to all the rooms of the house, from the
hasenient to the attic. Mrs. Brown in
formed me that Mr: Hollister, at the re
quilt of lion. liomingue, who calls him
self the President of' the South, had an in
terview with his Excellency and explain'
ud to him the real situation of tame at
Aux Cayes, us he understood it.
Mr. ' bellister and Mr. De Long'
begged Dointogue to spare the town
and to. take care of the interests of the
foreigners there. The President of the
new Republic was very polite, but
expressed a determination to hold out as
long as he could, and to dill rather than
yield. The murders" committed „by thit t
man doting the last few weeks surpass
belief. .On the 3rd of 'February he sent a
large force to the prison where he bad in
irons many of Salnavo'n.prineipal adher
wits, and murdered 'them all in cold
blood. A few were killed in their cells,
a , d the others were turned luoSet into the
'ail yard and shot by boys about 15 years
old in a manner too horrible to relate.
Boys use muskets in such a clumsy way
that it sometimes takes them signed while
to kill a person with small arms. In
several, instances, I am told, twenty shots
were tired at one prisoner.. The women
were more diffmult to kill than the 113011 ;
they struggled and fought for life in the
most appalling manner, and the eye•
witnesses say that their shrieks and int•
precations were lwartrending and too
frightful to be represented. A nephew of
the Itaytian Minister to France, General
Mentor, who was 'under medical treat•
mont at the time, wasplaced in a. eon.
firkUOUB position,,and obliged to see his
fellow•prisoners - murdered before he
found relief. Then ho was placed it. a
chair within a few feet of the muzzle of a
cannon and blown to pieces with grape.
shot. One hundred and ten persons were
massacred in this shocking manner. Mr.
Hollister, I am told, saw Mr. Rameau,
the Secretary of State of this now Repub
lic, which represents &Inure as a tyrant
( 1
and a murderer, and which has for its
motto ".I.lberty, 'Egan ity, and 'Prater.
Wily." The Captain f the American
gunboat, and the Captain of the British
ship.of war Jasou, were both present at
the internew, but no terms could be
made with the Rebels.
