PORK AS FOOD.
The recent deaths trom trichina in
Now York are creating some excitement
amongst pork eaters, as they should do,
and many persons will reilice at the
growing prejudice - in this country against,
the use of the floshysuch a filthy nn4
disgusting beast as the hog. How it
can be otherwise than Unhealthy wo fail
to perceive, and how any person who is
able to obtain any other food Gan relish
such an abomination, is strange indeed.
It is asserted that persons 'who totally
abstain from pork aro free from consump.
lion and, scrofula.- Whether this is true
or not we cannot shy ; but wo have no
doubt that the flesh of swine, under their
present habit of living, is itbsolutely, in.
jurious to any ono not having the diges
tion of an ostrich, to say nothing of tho
groat deng i hr pf a horrible death . by the
myriad worms which abound in the car
cass of the filthy ',toast.
Tho New York correspondent of the
Phila. Ledger says:
"A sensation was created on Tuesday
afternoon by a statement from the' Coro•
nor that several deaths occurred last week
from trichina apiralls. No tower than
seven eases occurred in a German boaid
ing house in Carlisle street. Of those,
two proved fatal; the others , aro under
treatment at the City Hospital.
"A piece of flesh, it seems, was taken
from the arm of ono of tho deceased, and
on being subjected to a miseroseopie ex
amination, was ,found to contain myriads
of animalettlaq
A proper regard for health should
cause all perfume to be exceedingly care•
ful in tho use of pork. If it is used at
all, lot it bo cooked very thoroughly, and
partaken of in moderation, although ono
would imagine that the !pally. recent
deaths from trichina would dissaudo
prudent persons from the ulb of such a
dangerous article of food.
".18 001. D doclining in value?" asks
the . Dispatch. We auswor—lsto; gold has
ono fixed, immutable value l atal it is only
tho fluctuation in the supposed value of
the presoak worthless paper currency,
that causoi the so•called "variation in the
price of gold." Instead of saying that
"gold is above par," tho proper oxpros•
sion would be "greenbacks aro below
par."
Tits Allentown Daily News appears to
us to be a pretty hood sort of paper, at
least what little wo have seen of it. o

credit to tho DAILY EAOLN for tbo articles

copying, it was certainly worth giving
credit for. We do not like plagiarists
of any kind or sort.,

In regard to the passage of the bill
the sale of the burial ground Of the Ger
man Reformed •congregatidn , 'of the city
Of Rending, I have this to , say:t,
Just before the passage of ,the .1411, I
was waited upon by two ef the gentlemen
who nro on the committea'olected liy the
church. They distinctly stated to me, in
presence of two of my.colleagues, that all
the diflicultierf•which had heretofore ox•
flied had bean amicably.adjusted x and
that' there was •no • division ! whatever
among the parties interested!:' It' was
stated at the same titrttthatldr. MAN,:
would not in any manner oppose the pas ,
sago of the bill, and that he was perfectly:
willing to abide by the decision of, the
congregation of the cluirch. k
When the gentlemen on the Pea of the
committee, called, 41(M me, they handed
ins the proceedings of the meeting of • the
church of the dt on the ,pteviouS
Mbliday evening, together 'with other no.
ceSsary documents. They'Pledged me
their worse of honor, that thelustter wins
nll right. An interview took plebe, at
which. I was present, between these two
gentlemen. The explanations being mu . ;
tually satisfactory, I took charge of the
bill and had it passed through
, --- 1
under a suspension of the rutes.. : ..
II was not aware at the time that there
49
any objection to the bill on the •pait
of the members of the church, being led
td this belief 13. V the statement made to
my colleagues and myself. '
• I confess I was somewhat surprised, 'a
few days after the passage of the bill, to
learn from Mr. Illekley ) and another gen
tleman, that they
• wore opposed to its
becoming a law. I had every, reason ,to,
suppose, previous to this:tin:lo, that .Mr.
RiokleY would not place the least obstacle
in the way of the passage of the bill. This
is a plain and truthful statement, of my
connection with the church . matter. I
noted throughout with the purest motive's,
as I could not, either directly dr indirect
ly, have any ieterest in It. ~ : . , . .
Now, ns to the Water Frontage hill,, on
'which • the Reading daily lays so imich
stress, I deny that I ever .pledged my
"word of honor"' to either vote for it or
against it. The assertion of 'the- editor
that I did is a wilful and malici6us false
hood, and I brand it as 8310 h• X nm
somewhat amused at the other Assertion,
that, unless a bill meets the approval of
any ono single member, the other Repre
sentatives should be careful hoi they vote
uon it. This ie simply ridiculous: I
will not allow any olher\rember to die
