Tri E 1 . 4 MEND OF Tin.: WILLow. , ----One .day a golden-haired child, who lived whore no trees or floiVera grew, was gazing wistfully through the open gate of a beautiful park, when a gar dener chanced to throw oat an armful of dry cuttings. .Among them the little girl discover ed one With a tiny bud just starting. "Peihaps it will grow," she whispered to herself, and dreaming of wido'cool boughs, aud flattering leaves, ahe carried it carefully home, and planted it in the darksomo area. Day af ter clay sho watched and tended it, and wben, by and by, another bud started, she.knew that tire slip, had takeit root. Years passediand the lowly home gave place to a pleasant mansion, and the, narrow area widened into a spacious garden , where many a green tree throw its shadow, But for the goid• on-haired . girl, now grown into a lovely maid en, the fairest and clearest of them All was the one she had so tenderly nourished, No other tree, sho thought, cast such a cool, soft shade; in no „ether boughs did the birds sing so sweetly. . ' But while the treo lived and flourished, the girl drooped and laded. . Sweeter and sadder grew the light in her blue eyes, till by and by God's angel trucked them with a dreamless sleep. Loving hands crowned the white brow with m'yrtle, and under the branches she had loved, laid her - tenderly, to rest. '. But from:thatPieur, as if in sorrow for tile owe that had tended it, the stately tree began to droop. Lower and lower bunt the sad ! branches, lower and ower, until they caressed tho, daisy mound that covered her form. . "Pee I" said. her young companions, "the tree weeps for her who loved ft." And the/ called it the IVeo ping Willow. SAIRA,II. AND TnE_ rtEcE OF CALICO. -7-- 9 shall never forget," said a lady . ono day to me, "my tirst, and I think I may Justly say, my last theft." 4 entreated her to tell me' the circumstances, which she did, and I will try to toll them to you as nearly in her own language as my memory will alloiv. When I was about seven or eight years old, I wont to a day school the neighborhood ; and nearly (ivory morning, on my way there, I used to step in at Mrs: Bennett's to• see her' little girl, Lizzie, a darling child, about three' yerirs old. ' , One morning,. I found Mrs. Bennet making a dress for Lizzie, of the most beautiful, calico. I thought it was the, prettiest I had over seen. I had read about fairies, princes, and genii, C thought it must have taken many of those felicitous beings to have composed and created such a lovely fabric. I wished I had a piece of it to put in a patchwork quilt which I was making 1 but did not like to ask for any. Oh, how pretty it was ! the longing grew in• tense. Mrs. Bennett's back was turned. I Ricked. up a three cornered piece from the floor and hid it in my bosom.. .. In two or three minutes I was on my way to school, every now and ; then looking at my beautiful calico, and thinking how cleverly I had managed to lot at. But all at once it struck me that I had stolen it I and I began to feel very badly. At school I couldn't attend to mylessons ; there seemed to ho great lumps in s my.throat, and the tri•eornered piece of calico, in my bosom, felt as if it were pierc inme with every point. ily teacher asked me if I. felt. sick. • I was going to reply "Yes," but foitunately I thought in time : "No, I will not tell a lie, besides stealing." So I answered that I felt-badly. C She very kindly told me to go, out in the playground for a little' while. Oh, how I wished she had not been -so -kind. I said to myself, "It she only knew what r‘ wicked girl I was, would she Speak to me again ?" I went out, and determined to get rid of the calico . but where to put it? Everybody would be sure to see it, andnow I stole it. I spied 'a hole in a port, ,bii l ld thought that would do for a hidine. place, I squeezed it in, and fancied that - I felt .tappier ; but the bright and beautiful colors i iaunted me yet, The children would see it. 1.: must , find some more secure place. I got it again, ,and tried to chew and swallow it. But it would not do. Oh, how wretchedly I was beginning to feel. On my way from school, I had to cross a bridge over a running stream of water, and there I thought I could get rid of it. I , Arew it over, and watched it slowly floating along. Now it whirledln a little eddy ; and now came swimming back again. Would it never float *out of sight? and if it• did, where would it go ? Wouldn't it be sure to float right in front of sonic ono who would know that it was Mrs. Bennett's calico, and 1 that I had stolen it? , . While , l leaned over the bridge, and watched it with all the agony of childish remorse, it caught against the root ore hush that grew upon the bank. Yes, there it stuck, where every one would see it. • I was sure they couldn't and wouldn't see anything , else. I heard wag en-wheels com:ng—coming: towards the bridge. I felt certain that Mrs. Bennett Was ' in that wagon, and all my uncles and aunts, andplay mates;and every one that knew me. They would all teo the calico, and know that 1 bad been stealing. I elimbed over the bridge at the risk of breaking my- -neck, crept down the bank, and hid till the wagon had passed. When all was qniet, I came • out of my hid. ing.place and tried to-reach the calico ; but my arm was too short. I took pti my oboes and I TEN CENTS PER WEEK. stockings. Oh, ii any ono abonld see me now With a desperate effort I reached die - Ilut what should 1 do with it now I had rot it° While putting on my shoes and stock • Inge 1 determined what to do. I ran along to ward home. trenched Mrs. Bennett's. She via 4 sitting nesi• the open window, 1 opened the gate, went up to the witniow, threw in the piece of ealieo,_and wits running sway when she called After'w. "Sarah, my dear child, what nils you?" I hardly dared to turn back; but ne she called again, I went slowly. "Why, Sarah, what the matter with jott ? You look quite pale. What did you throw the piece of calico in the window for?" "I stole, it !" said 1 desperately, expecting that she would tell inc never tO'conlu to her house any mere that, she couldn't have such a wicked girl play with her dear little Lizzie, She put down her work, laid hold of my hand, d r e w mo towar t bs her,' put her AMR around me, and said, pi(yingy, "My poor child 1" I had. not shed ft ~ t ear. all the day ; but my head felt as if it W,ould split, ati'd my throat ached. Those three vords opened the' tlood• gates of my poor little heart. I leaned my, head on her bosom, and burst into fears, "Sarah, dear," - she said, a s she held me close to her, "tell me all about it." I did toll her and my heart grew lighter and lighter. 'When 1 bad finished, sho said, I am sure I need not tiny a word to add to your ' sorrow ; vfla have suffered enough ta.day, and I don't Fhink•you will ever— be tempted to be dishonestaain. Takek, somo of these pieces of calico and t put thentin your patch-work, and whenever ti seo them- re member this day." My own ehiltlrennow sleepunder the bed quilt which I was then makin .
