The Port Huron Commercial relates the 'fol.
loWing: "Leon de Boux, a native of Gaspe,
in Lower Canada, and for the last four mouths
at work on the Whiten Island, left his log
cabin on Saturday, the 241 inst., with his dog,
a large, powerful Newfoundland, in pursuit of
game. Heisoon discovered the fresh 'tracks of
a large beer. Cautiously following it he reach
ed the shore of Lake Duro!), • end •saw at no
great distance on, the ice the very animal.—
Climbing over liege Weeks, which the storm
of the previous night had strewn in wild con:
fusion on the rocky coast, ho apkrotchOd;
denly the bear etopped, and tried to retrace
his steps to the neighboring forest. To inter
cept the animal, po lioux and dog went end°
ice, which seems d secure, as the road was for
miles unintercepted by water. He gained on
the bear free] minute to minute; when he saw
Ito his aetonishment that the huge beast stop
ped,.looked arooed and retraced his steps,
chsaing the doiffifore him. He shot, 'and at
well-aimed ballpiitkred the head and killed
him on the spot. rushing toward the carcass
ho did 'not observe that the wind had changed,
that We lee groaned and cracked. 'He reached
the beast and tried to drag it to the rhore l more
than threrefottrilis of a mile distant. But hew
R in e his surprise : when he found that the wind,
blowing frether ned taiire violent; had made a
chasm between him and the land more than two
rode broad. At mice seeing his perilous potion,
he fired rapidly and hrilhed at the top of hie
voice. No ono answered; echo alone brought
his own voice lec:,l, • out of deep
recesses . and rocks, and he
was rapidly drifting in a southivesterlY direc
tion to the middle of the lake: His position
was indeed most dmigeruns ; the wind increas
ed from moment to moment, and whin night
set in it, blow a perfect hurricane, breaking
the large piece of ice on which he stood into a
thousand fragments, throwing him et one mo
ment violently ageinst icy masses, at another
covering him with - tareezing wave. There he
sat on the dead bear, shivering dog it his
feet, looking wistfully at his, master for help.'
De Boux saw no help ; every momentthreat- -
sued death; the cold was intense,nnheltrable;
ho prayed and asked God to end his suffering:
the ice in the menntiuie drifted Wore and inoi e
to the Michigan shore, andiwhen day began to
break over the water he ch ild see far in the
distance a dark line, which growuntil be could
discover that it was land I suddenly the Ice on
Which ho ley stopped. It timid joined huge
fields of ice. • Exhausited and frost-hitien, he
walked for miled towards the shore on the fro
zen element, when again' the larg e island of
ice broke, dri ft ing steadily toward the Mich
igan shore. Now he could distinctly see, trees
and huts; he' heard the barking of do s; g ho
tried to load his gun to fire ; impossible, his
hands were swollen and benumbed ; he hal
looed and shouted—no help. ,And again night
passed, and again day broke over, the water,
and he lived still. le the meantime the.whid
had tumid more td . the ~east, and forced the
ice right into the western i:hore. Crawling on
his wounded hands he Mil hoft reached terra
firma about six miles north of the lightbouje,
where some kind-hearted fi shermen found him
and took him to their shantiee."
A Novel Method of Catching Kim
A correspondent of the Journal of Pilaf.-
macy says 3—" Having on several minions
noticed mice in. our seed bagel', I bethoeght
me of• some method how 1 •milglit trap the lit
tle intruders • they 'having gained entrance hy
eating throu gh the chime. To kill/ them with
a stick was impracticable, as' the little fellows
would invariably escape as soon its the'lld was
raised' to any height. I then thought of satu
ratinka piece of cotton with ehloroforti3 and
thrdwing it in t then closing the lid. On -rais
ing it again in a few minutes, I would find that
life had almost or quite departed. Ilavi?ig on
one occasion left the piece of cotton sn the
barrel, on again viturnlng t I found three mice
with their heads in elm contact with it, and
dead. / In — the evening I Saturated 'another
piece and placed it In the baulk and on
opening' it next morriing, to my surprise I
found nine dead mice."' We recommend our
Reading friends to try chloroform on their rats,
and see what effect it will have.

be broken, by an ingenious method practised
in France. It consists in boring a cylindrical
hole of two or three inches in diameter in • tbe_
pip,ice where the fracture is desired, filling it
with water, inserting a steel plug fitting the
hole aecarately, and then allowing the Inkm
