LAWLDANNWIS IN 4 1,911." INDIANA.
Murders of an OrgnalKed
From tho`Now Albany, Indiana, Coinniorolal,
-,llopen and arined re s shitance-to, and vio
lation of law, constitute revolution, then.
'theso is A revolution in progress in Jackson
county, for in that county , :law has been
spurned and justice flefied by an armed, mob
of two or three hundred men, whose Acts of
violence in the past nine or ton months have
(non of the most flagrant and' murderous
character. no other port of the West
Imfdtho.law ever been so insultingly defied.
• In December last, two men accused of
crime wore takenlout of Brownstown, jail by
nimob and hanged. ReContly a portion of
thislinSwent to the residencepf nu old mnn
near Rockford, who had fallen ulidor thdir
snspicion, took him from his bed, hanged
him up and out him down three different
times in order to extort a cobfusion from
him, and left him in . a state of stupor from
which ho never recovered, but died in half
1M hour after his luirbarous torturers left
his premises.
And Still mono recently six men, accused
c)f robberyittave been . taken from the Dicers
of the law by forgo and hanged until they
worn dead. And later still, the news Comes
to us that another man, also accused of
crime, vas seized by this mob on- Friday
night and hanged upon a tree not far 'from
Brownstown. Here aro ten cold-blooded
'murders committed by this mob of Jackson
` - county jayhawkers in less than nine months
—murders in the first degree, Withid tho
full meaning of the law.
If tho mob cannot bo broken up any other
way; let tho Governor order a military force
to Jackson county, with brders to put an
estoppel upon the mob, if to do So it is no•
cessary to employ powder,'ball and bayonet.
JaekSon county is a disgrace to the Slate of
Indiana, and it is indeed high time that the
outrages enacting there be ended.
ExplanimENms wun TILE STEEL
imILEn.
From tho Pittsburg al►ronicle, Aug. 26.
Yesterday afternoon another interesting
experiment was made with the' boiler twin
ufactured at the Fort Pitt works, from
homogeneous steel, 'made by Park, Brother's
bf this city. As before stated,,the
boiler is constructed of • steel plates, 'one
fourth of an• inch 'in thickness, is thirty
eight i►schcs in diameter, anal: seven feet
lung.
As on the previous trial, it was tested by
hydrostatic pressure, and on the tenth trial
it withstood a pressure of seven hundred
and twenty•five'pounds to the square.' inch,
when, in consequence of the givitig away of
one of the stay bolts, further experiments
had to be abandoned for
,the present.
The boiler on yesterday tiftFueon stretch ,
ed three•eighths of an inch during iho se
vere rest's to which it had - been subjected ;
in.all it has *{•etched two and seven•eighth
inches.
Sommthink Afint had sufficient force been
brought to bear on the first trial the boiler
.
would hay° withstood a pressure of twelve
hundred pounds to the square inch. No
boiler has over before been known to with
stand so high a pressure as the one tried on
these occasions. •
OftAN'T A 8 A Cirnalm..—Greeley, in his
history of the war of tho Rebellion, has the
• following in relation to ono of. Grant's'
battles :
•
“TwentyVainutes after; the first shot was
fired full 10,000 of our men were stretched
and writhing on the sod or still and calm in
(loath, while the enemy's loss was, probably
little more than :1,000, And when, hours
later, orders were sent to each corps cow=
/ wander to renew the assault, at once, with
out regard to any other;, the men . simply
and unanimously roftfsed to obey it., They
knew that success 'was hoteless, and the
attempt to gain • it murderous, hence they
refused tobe saerifico4l to no purpose?'
'that was not the (only battle in 'which
• Grant exposed his army to useless butch ,
