drop you a few lines, and that, through your
valuable papOr, you could tell your many
readers what is going on up hero on tho side
of Cushion Mountain.

This is not the case, for we havirour social
gatherings, and moral teachings.. Though
we are on the mountain gospel 4
with its Ministers, firid their way up .here
with us. This season the Rev. John Berg,
of Baltimore, Md., preaches in the spacious
,parlors of the Cure, to the invalids and the
people from Wernersville,and neighborhood.

On the evening of the 2iith islet., , the in-1
mates of the r 9 were treated to a lboture
from the same Rev. gentleman l on the Lights
and. Shades of Human Life, The subject
was treated on in his peculiar happy style.—
The large audience,whicli collected together
in the parlor of the Home, wore treated for
one hour and a half to an intellectual feast,
'such . as is rarely . given in any place or lec
ture..
After the Rev, gentle Tan had finished his
eloquefit and/ glowing description' of the
Lights and Shadows of Human Life, pr.
Smith tendered a yoto of thanks to the leo..
turor, which were unanimously given,: and
the guests of the Cure retired well pleased
with tlib °vote of the.ovefiing.

READING now ranks as the third city • in
tho State of Pennsylvania , and no one can
doubt that within a few more years
we shall rank as the second city. We

Manufacturing Cities and Towns, published
in 1866, which may prove ofinterest to our
readers : 7
Reading.—A handsome city of Pennsylva
nia, capital of Borks county, on the left or
east bank of the Schuylkill River, and on
the Philadelphia, Reading and Pottsville
Railroad, 52 miles east of Harrisburg, and
58 m iles north of Philadelphia. This flour
ishinig town, the third of the State in respect
to population and manufactures, is beauti
fldly situated on a plain which rises gradual ,
ly from the river, and is enclosed on the
east by an eminence named Penn's Mount.
Tho city is compactly built, and intersected
by straight and rectangular streets, , which
are remarkably clean and smooth. The riv
er hero is crossed by two bridges, one of
which is about 600 feet in length. Reading
is a place of active trade, and is the market
of a rieh and populous agricultural district.
The Schuylkill Canal mid the railroad above
named open 'a ready communication with
Philadelphia on the one hand, and with the
Schuylkill coal region on the other. The
Lebanon Valley 'Railroad connects Reading
with Harrisburgh, and the Nast Pennsylva
nia Railroad extends to Allentown. The
town is largely engaged in themanufacture
of iron, steam engines, hats , shoes, and Va
rine other articles. The, Machine abatis of
the railroad company employ about 1,100
men. Reading was laid out by Thomas and
Richard Penn in 1748, and named from the
tewn , of Reading,in England. • It was incor
porated as a borough in 1783, and as a city
in 1847. 'lt contains 2 large iron forges, 2
manufactories of agricultural implementa, 2
large iron-foundries,2 extensive cotton mills,
1 cordage factory, 1 ear factory, 1 mantifac
tory of chemicals, 2 boiler factories, 2 wool
en mills, 1 large distillery, 1 brass foundry,
0 machine shops, 1 hardware factory, 1 nail
factory, 1 tack factory, 5 hat factories, 1
manufactory of paper-h9ginga,,B breweries,
4 largo rolling mills, 1 brick inannfoct447,
flouring mill, 1 planing mill, 1 tannery, 1

learn that this excellent institution is pros
pering as it' deserves. The only wonder is
that it is not even more frequently visited
than it is at present. It is situated on the
•Edstern slope of the Cushion Mountain, li
miles from Wernersvillo station on the.
Lebanon Valley Railroad s and is only 8
miles from Reading. A visit to the "liqmo"
will repay any ono who admires beautiful
scenery, Or who desires to indulge in the
luxury. of the Turkish or other baths. Tho

FRIGHTFUL teCIDENT. Mr. 'Jeremiah
Focht, a reside i t of Lime:dawn, 'this county,
met with a horrible accident one day last
week. Ile, in company 'with several others,
were employed in quarrying limestones.—
They had just lo aded a bvivy blast and were
preparing tO\ d ischarge it. The fuse they
used was tightly packed, causing it to burn
rather slotyly. After the fuse had been ignit
td, Mr.F,evidently thinking it had gong out,
stepped into the quarry and commenced ex
arinaiug it with a pm. The fuse was con
sumed to the surface of the filling,,being still

discharged, throwing some sparks into keg

This is the third. accident of. the kind that
'occurred at this quarry on a former occasion
a man being instantly killed. . The doctors
say Mr. F. Is doing as well. , as\ could be ex
pected under the circumstances. He made
a narrow escape, and altogether it is a won'
der he' was not sit:littered to pieces.
