hold the position of so much importance to him.
About three o'clock General Grant started two
columns against the weakened centre ? and after
an hour's desperate fighting succeeded in break

The main force was driven northward toward
General Sherman, who opened on them, and they
were forced to break and seek safety in disor—

enemy is most complete. Abandoned wagons,
caissons, and occasional pieces of artillery are
everywhere to be found.
I think Bragg's loss will fully reach sixty
pieces of artillery.
A large number of prisoners have fallen into
our hands.
The pursuit will continue to Red Clay, in the
morning, for which place I shall start in a few
hours. U B. GRANT, Major General.
[Red Clay, the point to which General Grant
was to advance yesterday, is in the northern part
of Whitefteld county, Georgia, near the Tennes

The situation of affairs at Knoxville ie genet , -
tained to be still satisfactory. There was heavy
fighting west of Knoxville on Saturday. The
investment of the town to the North is close,
but the south side is open. General Burnside is
confident of final success.
The Star says: We have reliable intelligence
from our army under General Burnside, at
Knoxville, up to daylight yesterday, embracing
twenty-four hours later than we had before re

General Burnside bad been able not only to
bold his position wiihnut loss, but to keep open

operations as could be desired.
