    .ABAUFT BUT SUGGISortvg.—A showily dressed
woman, not bad looking, yesterday entered a
handsome Store along the promenade. She
looked like the wife of a man who had suddenly
made money by army con! reels. Her f harness"
was good, but the wearer evidently was but
lately accustomed to indulgenes in finery. She
entered the .1 principal depot" of a eithen, who,
among other proprietary articles, is the inven
tor of a celebrated hair tonic.
As she entered, proprietor was behind the
counter, a matter rather rare for him, and with
his hat on his head. Ile personally waited on
her, asking, with his best smile, " what can I.
show you, ma'am?"
•• Why, your hair tonic."
Here it is, ma'am"—producing a bottle of
the article.
This is what makes hair grow, does it?"
"Yes ma'am; you'll find a little pamphlet in
side the wrapper with many certificates from
people who have been bald."
"Humph! What's the price I"
" A dollar a bottle ma'am—six bottles for five
dollars."
" Ton're certain it'll bring hair in ?"
" U never fails unless the hair is destroyed by
disease."
" Well, I've got a bald spot on the Lop of my
head. I'd give five hundred dollars to have it
covered again."
Proprietor said he had no doubt the tonic
would accomplish the malt, and the lady ordered
the half dozen to be sent to her house. Proprie
tor took the address. As the lady turned to
leave the store, proprietor removed his hat, show
ing a hoad whose crown was innocent of covering.
•' Well, I declare I" exclaimed the lady trans
fixed, looking at him in blank surprise.
.. What is it, madam ?"
•• Why I swear if you ain't bald yourself."
Proprietor was about to rejoin, but the lady
continued :
"I don't want that hair grease o' yourn now.
I jest believe you're a lyin."
Proprietor attempted to explain, but the lady
wouldn't listen. She couldn't be made to be
lieve that a man could make "hair grease" to
restore other people's hair, when bald himself.
She left advising him to grow a crop of hair on
his own head before undertaking to furnish a
recipe to cover the heads of other fonts.

they should keep their hats on.—Phila. U. S. Oa

THIS MOULT OF STREET EDUCATION.—Keep
your children off the street.
By that we mean, do not let them make ac

shouting to the cook :
..Now then, old girl, slap up that dinner."
" Why ! Manfred !" began the astonished moth
er, "where did you learn such language? who
have you been playing with ?"
"Me," said young hopeful, "I generally play
will, Dinh Turner, cause he's a bully boy with a
glass eye. That's so."
The fowl mother was about to express some
astonishment at the optical misfortune of Dick,
when the son continued:
"311 a, I'm going to buy a plug.—Jem Smith
Veers one, and I'm as big as he is."
"A plug !" gasped the mother.
"Yes sir-ee, a plug. I've got the spondulicks
salted down in a box, sure; and it's bound to
come."
The mother at this juncture ordered the young
ater up stairs, and sent for a man servant to in
terpret the slang.
say- AN OFFICER who was inspecting his com

was sadly begrimed. "Patrick O'Flynn !"
cried out the captain. Ilmra, yer honor,"
promptly responded Patrick, with his hand to
his Gap. How long do you wear a shirt ?"
thundered the officer. "Twisty-eight inches," was
the rejoinder.
