VARIE.7I:
LINES BY A YOUNG! LADY
When I regard that plumage gay,
By Nature's bounty all conferred,
I often feel disposed to say
Would I were clothed as yonder bird !
Ent oh, that moulting I To appear
In dishabille until 'twas o'er,
To get a dress but once a year,
And wear one fashion evermore I
When I consider all those things,
I cheek the - wish that seems absurd,
And sigh no more for golden wings:
d not be clothed like yonder bird.
gOrA NlAir Gamuts correspondent of the St.
Louis Republican tells two negro stories, one is
of a woman cook and man servant. The woman
was upbraiding' the man for not going into the
army and thus Egh,ing for his liberty. and finally
she came down emphatically with the remark—
" Was I a man, I'd be seed in sojer clothes
afore you could say Jack Robinson. You,
you're a disgrace to de color, and ought to be
a slave forever. Go way, niggab ; l'ae got a
contempt for yen."
The negro man was evidently much " taken
down," but finally mustered a reply, which I
think "will pass."
..Look a bosh, Hannah, sposin' you had two
bills, a good one nod a counterfeit, witich'en of
'em would you get rid of lust ?"
"Why, de counterfeit, of course, you fool,"
said Hannah."
" Well, dst's just it—de white sojer is de good
bill, and do black sojer is de counterfeit, and
dey puts do counterfeit sejer in de front ranks,
and he gets killed off fast: I does'nt go writ).
jerin, nohow !"
Not tad logic that, which reminds me of the
negro who went to a menagerie in which was a
large baboon in a cage. The.negro approached
the cage closely, while the baboon went through
several gyrations, such as nodding and shaking
his head, holding out one of his hands for the
negro to Aole, etc., to the evident delight of
both negro and baboon. Finally, baboon seem
ed so intelligent and knowing," the negro ad
dressed him some remarks., which the baboon
only answered by a nod of the bead. At this
the negro was still more delighted, and broke
forth with the remark—
You'oe right—don't open your month, hoe
if you spuke's a word, white man 'l' have a
shovel in your hand in lees dan a minit 1"
OLD BARTEIt ASV ILle EXCUSE.-01.1 Barley
Willisrd was a wheelwright by trade, am/ re
markable for procrastination. Ile would prom
ise over and over again, with as little scruple,
and as many "positively lasts" as a theatrical
star. Having pledged his word to a very urgent
customer, for the third time, that lie would have
Lis cart done by a certain day, Barley again fail
ed to keep his engsgeraent, and, on the arrival
of the owner, the cart was still unfinished.
" Well," said the customer," you have got my
cart done this time, of course?"
," said Barley, " I have done the work
and supposed it was quite ready for you, when
I discovered that I had made qn unaccountable
mistake that will put me back a fortnight."
" Ah, indeed," said the customer, " what's
the trouble'!"
MEI
" Why, you see." said Barley, with gravity,
and an air of extreme vexation, "you see that I
have made a mistake—l never made such a blun
der in my life—l have committed the ridiculous
mistake ef making both wheels for the same
side ; they are both off wheels."
Is it possible ?" said the customer, who was
thoroughly mystified, and to allowed Barley
another fortnight to finish the cart.
REAL GENTLE3IAN--A waiter was examined
the other day before one of our courts. We an
nex his testimony : "Your name is Flunkey, I
believe ?" " Yes, sir, Rob:rt Flunkey." " Well,
Mr. Flunkey, you say the defendant is no gen.
tleman. What makes you think so ?" "'Cause,
sir, be always says thank you, when I hand him
a mutton chop, or even a bit of bread. Now, a
real gentleman never does this, but hollers out,
' Here, Bill, get me a mutton chop, or I will
throw this popper hex at your head.' You can't
deceive me with a gentleman, your worship.
'Cause why! I have associated with too many
of them at the raee•eourse."
COOPER once slurred a certain Governor
by attributing the disease in potatoes to the
mortification they felt at seeing so small a
member of their family in the gubernatorial
chair."

My wife, Who was attacked with pain in the shoulders,

Dysmenorrhau, and Irritation of the Bladder. I called a
physician, who attended her about three months, when he
left her woree than lie found her. I then employed one of
the bout phystclana I could end, who attended her for about
nine menthe, and while abe was ender his care she did not
suffer quite an much pain; be finally gave her up and
said : "her ease was Incurable." For, said be, " she has
such a conthinedion of complaints, that tnedicilu given

About this time, she commenced the use of Constitution
