THE DRAFT IN BERKS COUNTY.
The first Conscription under the Act of Con
gress passed March 3d,1863, entitled «An Act.
for Enrolling and Calling out the National For
ces," commenced in Berke -county on Wednes
day, August 26th, and was completed on Satur
day, the 29th Of August, 1863. The whole
number Of preens enrolled in the class liable to
this draft, was 7,773, and the number drawn
was 2,331, which includes the 60 per cent. ex
cess provided to make up the deficiency that may
arise from exemptions, &o. The total, quota of
mon required from this county for military ser
vice under this draft, is 1,554.
