TEE END OF MORGAN'S RAID. his Forces Routed and Captured—Nor gan Makes his Escape. CINCINNATI, July 21. The MCI, cing has just been received at Gen. Burnside's headquarters: _ _ HEADQUARTERS OF TRU U. S. FORCES, IN THE FIELD, GEIGER'S CREEK, July 20-9 P. M. Col. Diektgowl, A. A. We chased John Morgan and his command ever fifty miles to-day. After heavy skirmishing far six or seven miles between the 45th Ohio, of CA. Wolford's brigade. which was in advance, and the enemy, we succeeded in bringing him to a stand about three o'clock this afternoon, when a fight ensued, which lasted an hour. The reb els then fled, taking refuge upon a very high bird. l rent a flag of truce demanding the immedi es an.l nnc onditieasl surrender of Morgan and his command. The dig was received by Colonel Coleman and other %dicers, who came down and asked a per naiad interview. They asked an hour for con- Pileden, I granted forty minutes, in which time the command, excepting Morgan (who deserted his command, taking with him a very small squad) en, rendered. it was my understanding that lorgan himself had surrendered, and I learned ths;.bach was the understanding with Morgan's silvers and men. The number of killed and bounded is inconsiderable. no number of prisoners is between 1,000 and including a largo number of colonels, lahjura and line officers. I captured between 1, 1 9 and 700 prisoners yesterday. I think I will capture Morgan himself to-morrow. SHACICELFORD, Brigadier General. WASHINGTON, July '2l. Ms* General Burnside, in transmitting Brig adier General Shackelford's report to Major General Beek, says: - "We have strong hopes of being able to cap ture Morgan and the remaining portion of his faces. thus entirely wiping out this band. am end Shackelford says the eondnot and bearing of his oven officers and men, without exception, Pieced the greatest gallantry awl 16 high degree os main and discipline." THE ARM OF THE POTOMAC. Coseral Lee supposed to be Cut off from Richmond. ttempted Rebel Raid on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad_ WASHINGTON, July 23, 1863. The relative situations of the armies in Vir- Jain is to-day clearly understood here. It is "parent that General Meade has thelishel array , f Lee completely entrapped- lie is evidently awing his forces to break his way through to I , iehmond, but will probably find it sr more dif ficult undertaking than the one at Gettysburg. After all the delay, there is now not much prospect of Lee being able to gat his army back u Richmond, or even so far as the upper end of • he Shenandoah valley. Ruaaxons, July 23, 1863. About four hundred rebel cavalry, encamped t%r Noland's Ferry, three miles from Point of teks, attempted to cross the Potomac last night ' .th the intention of tearing up the rails of the r sidings owl Qltio Railroad. But their designs ere frustrated by a band of independent rang commanded by Captain Means, who drove. etc from the river. They remain still encamp . et their quarters. We learn further from headquarters that at bout three o'clock this I"Thuynday) morning tes entire army was in motion -and moving pidly in the direction of Winchester. Ewell, who had made a move in the direction of Cam. berland, also fell back and followed Lee. There ILO parties now at Martinsburg, but a body of cavalry and some few horsemen scattered be tween that place and the Potomac. Scouts re part an increased body of cavalry near Harper's Perry, supported by two regiments of infantry, (1 4 of which is around in Union uniforms. THE RUMORED DISASTER AT CHARLESTON WAsHiseroN, July 24, 1863 A faint rumor, whispered here yesterday, of disaster at Charleston, has taken tbo ferta of a dispatch to-day, and is telegraphed back here credited to The N. York Daily News. The whole story is false, no attack haring been made upon Charleston by land, nor is it likely any such will tt. The latest advises received by the Govern. 'vest represent operations as going on favorably. The capture of Fort Wagner and Cummings ..iat battery, and the reduction of Fort Sumter, are the immediate objects in view. TOE REBELS DESPONDENT The Richmond papers speak most despondently cl the state of affairs in the rebel armies, both in th e Wht. and in Virginia. The Richmond of the 9th inst. ears that the ix telligence front General Lee falls far short of the promise of the despatches of the previous day, and v0u2.1 prove a grievous disappointment of the high wrought hopes of the public, and that, Wadded to the fall of Vicksburg, it casts a olobre obalivw over affairs in the confederacy DEMOCRATIC MEETING TN BERN A large meeting of the Democracy of Bern township, was held on Saturday, the liih day of June, 1863, at the house of Samuel Tobias, for the purpose of organizing a Democratic Club, in conformity with the Resolutions of the late Coun ty Meeting.
