" NOT TER LOBO BUT bUROOYBR !"—The Rev.
James Gallagher used to tell the following an—
ecdote with great Bret;
During the Revolutionary war reports were
" - circulated, as they are now, either wholly false
of greatly exaggerated. In passing from ono to
another something was sure to be added, until
the story would hardly be known to the author of
it. The people in certain sections of New York
were in great consternation front a report that.
General Burgoyne wan marching down from the
lakes with an immense army, bringing, utter
desolation to the inhabitants. An old lady heard
the report and understood it that Burgoyne was
to open the lakes and let the water out., and drown
the whole region- Full of the terrible vision,
she ran to a neighbor's to tell her the latest news
about the war. '
" Do you know that we are going to be drown
ed? Burgoyne ie going to let the water out of
the lakes and make a great. flood, and we shall
all be drowned .! Olt, what shall we do ?"
Her neighbor, with more intelligence and
piety, did not seem to be greatly disturbed, but
calmly replied •
"That certainly, must be a mistake. It can
not be true, for God has promised in his Word
that he will no more destroy the iuhahitants of
the earth with a good."
"Alt, honey! Iknow that; but it is not the
Lord who is going to do It it le Burgoyne !"
A Goon JOSS. —A few days since an extra
train, loaded with jackasses, were transported
over. the Leaisvilie and New AlOnn7 railroad.
The telegraph operator at Salem, a boy, getting
wind of it, sent a rumor that. Governor Morton,
of Indiana, and Governor Yates, of Illinois, ac
companied by a large delegation of Republicans,
with bands of music, etc., would pass through
at a certain hour. Immense crowds of enthusi
astic Republicans repaired to the depot, hats in
band ready for the expected cheer. When the
train thundered in an aged and venerable owner
of a pair cf fabulous ears stuck his head out of a
stock car and gave vent to a long agonizing
bee-haw that fairly shook the hills around. Con
sternation seized the crowd, and in two minutes
not a Republican WSW 14 be seen within a square
of the depot. Complaint has been made to the
superintendent against the operator, and he is
in momentary expectation to quit.
Nor KM a glorious speculation has failed
for the same good reason that the old Texan ran
ger gave when he was asked why he didn't buy
land when it was dog cheap. " Well, I did come
nigh OH to taking eight thousand acre., onest,"
said old Joe, mournfully. " You see, two of the
boys came in one day from an Indian hunt,
without any shoes, and offered me their titles to
the two leagues just below here for a pair of
boobs," "For a pair of boots 1" we exclaimed
" Yes, for a pair of boots for each league." "But
why on earth did you not take it ?" They'd be
worth one hundred thousand dollars to-day.
Why didn't yon give them the boots ?" " Jest
because I didn't have the boots to give," said
old Joe, as he took another chew of tobacco,
quite as contented as if he owned two hundred
leagues of land.
afar A Joss is told by the boys of the 117th,
in regard to the "muttering in" of a Jokey at
tached to the Regiment who was fearful he would
be deprived of his pay unless ho was joined to
the service. A hugh mustard plaster was ap
plied to his hack about a foot below where the
coat buttons are placed, and under the belief that
all soldiers were served in the same manner, he
wore it until the pain became unendurable, at
which time he was declared "mustered in" ac
cording to the law in such cases made and pro
vided. If that darkey don't get his wages it will
not be because he has not suffered for his
country.
Bair BISHOP Holm had his dignity somewhat
taken down when be took possession of the Epis
copal palace at Norwich, in 1792. He turned
upon the steps and eaclaimed :—
~~
Bless us ! bless us! what a multitude of peo
ple!"
"Oh ! my lord," said a bystander, 46 this is
nothing to the crowd last Friday to see a man
hanged l"
