• AN ODD lecinstir tN ORD/WEL—A correspon
dent of ...Harper's Drawer" furnishes the follow
ing, which is both new and good
A few years since, while ireeelling in one of
the mountainous and somewhat barren counties
of Northwestern Georgia, in the early spring
time and upon the Sabbath day, I reined up my
horse at the front of an bumble log church situ
ated in a beautiful grove. The congregation
had, assembled, the inside being pretty well filled
by the white settlers living thereabout. Outside,
upon stumps and under the shade of trees, were
to be seen groups of Atries eons of toil, cleanly
dressed, and apparently full of enjOymeett as
the broad grin and occasional loud chuckle
demonstrated- I entered and took a seat•
The warm Southern sun, looking down upon
the earth with its balmiest and kiodlieet greet
ing ; the tall and reverend form of the aged past
for of divine life; and the rapt, solemn expres
sion of upturned faces, all lifted the soul with
the beauty and dignity of the Scriptures. Just
at this solemn moment a lizard—probably reviv
ed by the sun's hot rays—ventured into the holy
sanctuary, upon the back of a. seat whereon sat
an old and care-worn disciple of the church,
without coat or vest. The extreme heat of the
day Was ample apology for the scantiness of Lie
appareL By his side eat a lovely, red lipped
daughter, apparently eighteen years of age—
behind them a mischievous-looking urchin of
about fourteen. Seeing the lizard stretched at
its lazy length—undecided whether to proceed
or retire from this thronged human habitation—
the parent of all mischief put it into the lad's
head to catch it by the tail. As he did so, lie
quietly leaned forward toward the old man, who
was inclined in a patient, hearing attitude, and
dropped it down the gap in his loose, home-made
pantaloons_ Feeling the roughness of the crea
ture's claws, he jumped hurriedly and excitedly
from his seat, bringing his hang around with
great force. The lizard, perceffing his advance
cut off, turned for a retreat and gained admission
beneath the coarse cotton shirt. Here, upon the
bare flesh, his claws were intolerable. In an
agony of fright,—with huge drops of sweat stand
ing upon his forehead, and his eyes protrAing
from their socketethe old man began to die
robe.. The preacher ceased hie feeling exhorta
tion; the eyes of all the congregation were turn
ed upon so strange and unaccountable a scene.
Two of the deacons advanced towards him. His
daughter, in great alarm, sprang from her seat,
and jumping up and down, and wringing her
hands, screamed out:
" , oh, lordy, lordy ! daddy's got a St!"
"No, darter 1" cried the old man beneath the
thick folds of hie cotton shirt ; "it's no fit—ien
Si snake!"
The remainder of this serio-lndierons scene ie
left to the reader's imagination.
CAI A CARPET .BAG EAT was but a day or
two ago, while (ravelling upon the cars between
this city and Columbus, that a train stopped at a
small village not a hundred miles off, the con
ductor crying out 'Fifteen minutes for dinner.'
The passengers, of whom there happened to
be a large number, rushed into the dining apart
ment, and took the seats at the table, one of
them depositing his carpet-bag in the chair nest
to him. At the usual time the landlord passed
around to make his collection, calling upon the
aforesaid passenger for his payment for dinner._
'How much ?' says the passenger.
'Eighty cents,' replied the landlord.
'Eighty cents for dinner? why that is extor
tionate'
No, sir; it is not extortionate. Ain't that
your carpet-bag
" Yes air; that is my carpet-bag.'
Well, that carpet-bag occupies a seat and of
entree I must charge for it.'
'Oh: is that the ease ? Well, here is your
eighty cents.'
Turning to the carpet-bag the passenger re
marked 'Well, Mr. Carpet, Dag, as you have
not had much to eat, suppose we take some
thing,' at the same time opening its mouth, and
turning therein half a hsm, a roast chicken, a
plate of crackers, and sundry other articles,
amid the roars of laughter of the other passen
gers.
The prevailing opinion among the passengers
was that the oarpet-bag won.—Cincinnati En
