OLD Ann Trines Hie Ton.—For occasional sal
lies of genuine original wit, gives us a country
grocery on winter evenings and rainy days, and
the bar-rooms of country hotels. As an instance,
take the following, which occurred in a bar-room
not long since. There was quite a collection,
and our friend 8 , who is a Democrat, and friend
M, who is a Republican, had been earnestly,
but pleasantly, discussing politics ; and as a lull
took place in the conversation, 8. spoke as fol
lows:
"M., how many public men are there who are
really temperance men I"
" Oh, I don't know," replied M.
Well,"! said S., "I don't know of but one
that I can speak positively of on our side, and
that is Genera Cass."
.. Well," said AL, promptly, " There le Presi
dent Lincoln on our aide, certain."
" Gnats not," said S., incredlnously.
"Guess yes," replied M., warmly.
"But you don't pretend to say that President
Lincoln is a temperance man ?" asked S.
"Yes .1 do," answered M., 6 . and can maintain
the statement.
" Well now, I tell you that Abraham Lincoln
is as fond of his tod as any man living," replied
S., earnestly, si and can prove it to you."
"Well, I tell you that he isn't," replied M
who began to get eacbs I; " He is as pure and
strict a temperance man as there is in the
awn ry
"I contend," replied S., with provoking cool
ness, •that Abraham Lincoln is so fond of his
tod that it is the kat thins he thinks of when he
goes to bed, and the first when he wakes .in the
morning."
"It's a confounded Inc:foto Zit!" &Initiated
M., springing to his feet.
" Hold on ; friend 11.," said S., " what was
Lincoln's wife's name before she was married 1..
" Todd, by thunder:" exclaimed M, jumping
more Than a foot from the floor; •• boys, let's ad
journ to the other room."
THE WISE AND LEAF, AN ELOPE:44NT,
O listen, ladies, and I'll tell you brief
A. touching tale, and true as history.
The Wind and Leaf held dalliance. "Gentle
Leaf,"
Began the Wind, " awake and fly with me!
For thee I pass'd the beds where roses are:
And though their whispers fragrant woo'd my
stay,
And every little bud ahem like a Mar,
I thought on thee ;—ariee awl come away
Thy sisters dark are sleeping in the dew,
I would not rouse their coldness with a sigh ;
But thou the beautiful, and I the true,
Were meant for common passion—let ne fly."
The Leaf complied, and ere a day was done
Was flung aaide—a, thing to tread upon.

BITTLIXO A DOCTOR'S BILL BY MARRIAM-A
young lady named Addie Jameson, only 16 years
old, at New-York, in getting out of an omnibus,
last Spring, fellsmd broke one of her legs. A
young M. D. who lived in that street, had the
suffering girl taken to his boardinghouse close
by, where he set the broken limb, and she was
then taken home. He continued his attendance,
fell in lave with Miss J 4 and finally offered his
hand in marriage. She accepted ; but her father
refused his assent to the match, because the doe
for was poor, and as yet had but little practice.
Simk i ns a l umni made out a bill of $2 per
visit for 218 visits, and $2O for setting the broken
leg. He meant to have pay for his courting, if
it had to go for nothing. The old man finding
that he must pay some $4OO to $5OO, or lose his
daughter, finally gave the doctor the latter on
receiving a receipt in full, and the juvenile Miss
Jameson is now Mrs. Dr. Grayson.
Too MANY "IRONS 111 THE FLlM.—Whenever you

gets married to any one of 'em. One cools off,
and before ehe brings any of 'em to the right

Then eh may blow, and, blow till she's tired;
she may blow up a dust, but the dense of A flame
She can blow up again. .I never see a clever
looking gal in danger of that but I don't long to

Wes POWER CURRENCL—A good joke was
practiced on the woollies in Havana, Schuyler
county, N. Y., recently. An old chap, not worth
a red, issued a batch of shinplasters which he
wide payable at the Havana Bank. One of the
bigwigs, of the place,.a Senator and stockholder,
met the joker one day and commenced lecturing
him on•theiMpropriety and illegality of hie con
duct; winding up with, " Yon have no legal or
moral right Lo issue them—how, then, can you
do it ?" "Do it, Senator," replied the cheap
currency man; "do it—why I do . it under the
war power." There was no more said.
