A WOMAN WHO NEVER G005n.3.-0 1 ., no; I
never gossip! I have enough to do to talta, care
of my own business, without talking about the
affairs of others, Mrs. Smith. Why, there's
- Mrs Crocker—she deals in scandal by the whole
sale. It does seem to me as though that woman's
tongue must be almost worn out; bat no, there's
no danger of that. If everybody was like me,
there wouldn't be much trouble in the world.
Oh, no, I never gossip! But do you know that
Miss Elliot had got anew silk dress, Mrs. Smith ?
Yon, didn't? Well, she has. It's real brocade;
I saw it myself; and I do say it's a shame for
her to be so extravagant. I mean to give her a
piece of my mind, Mrs. Smith. You believe her
uncle gave it to her ? Well, I don't care if he
did_ Why it's only two months since her father
failed ; and now to see her dash out in. that
style a burning shame. I suppose she
thinks she's going to catch young Lawyer Jones,
bat I think she'll find herself mitilfitert. lfe's
got more sense than to be caught by her, if she
has got a brocade silk dress. And there's that.
upstart dressmaker, Kate Manly, setting her cap
for the doctor's son.—The impertinence of some
people is perfectly astpnir♦bing. I don't think
she's any better than she ought to be. For my
own part, I never did like her, with her mild soft
look, when anybody's about. My word for it,
she can look cross enough when there ain't.
Then she says she is only seventeen ! Good
ness knows elm is as old as my Arabella Lucre
tia, and she's mor'n seventeen, and I ain't asham
ed to say so, neither ; but I think Doctor May's
son will have more discretion than -to think of
marrying her, Some folks call her handsome.—
Well, I don't. She ain't half as good looking as
my daughter Jane. Then the way she does her
hair up in such flyaway curls ! and, if you be
lieve, Mrs. Smith, she actually had the impu
dence to tell me that she couldn't make her hair
as straight as Maria's. Impertinent ! If she'd
let curling papers and curling-irons alone I'd
risk but what her hair would be as straight as
anybody's. But, what do you think of the min
ister's wife, Mrs. Smith? You like her I Well,
all I can say is, you've got a peculiar taste.
Why she's as proud as Lucifer—been married
now a week, and hasn't been to see me yet! You
presume she hasn't bad time? I don't see what
the minister wanted to go out of tasty to gat B.
wife for, any way; and then, above all things,
to get that little girlish looking thing ! Why
didn't be take one of his parishioners? There's
my Arabella Lucretia would have made him a
better wife than he's got now.
A Goon STOAT.—Editors, like other shrewd
men, must live with their eyes and ears open.
A good story is told of one who started a paper
in a western !wits_ The town was infested by
gamblers, whose presence was a source of annoy
ance to the citizens, who told the editor if he did
not come out agalhst them they would not pat
ronize his paper. lie replied that he would give
them a smasher" the next day. Sure enough,
his next issue contained the promised 6 , smash
er ;" and on the following morning the redoubt
able editor, with scissors in hand, was seated in
his sanctum, when in walked a large man, with
a club in his hand, who demanded to know if the
editor was in.
"No, sir," was the reply; "he has stepped
out. Take a seat and read the papers—he will
return in a minute?
Down sat the indignant man of cards, crossed
his legs, with his club between them, and com
menced reading a paper. In the meantime the
editor quietly . vamosed down stairs, and at the
landing he met another excited man with a cud
gel in his hand, who asked if the editor was in.
Yes; sir," was the prompt response; "yon
will find him seated up stairs, reading a news
paper."
The latter, on entering the room, with a furi
ous oath, 'commenced a violent assault upon the
former, which was resisted with equal ferocity.
The fight was continued till they had rolled to
the stairs, and had pounded each other to their
hearts' content.
SHAXSPEAILVB llirmock.—We find in the Jew
islf:Record, ajournal devoted to the interests of
American Israelites, and published in New York,
a new version of Shakepeare's " Merchant of
Venice." The writer, who is himself a Jew,
says the play is founded on fact, with this
portant difference, that it was the Jew who was
to forfeit the pound of fifth if he lost the wager.
The circumstance took place not at Venice, bet
in Rome, during the pontificate of Sixtus the
Fifth. The Jew lost; the noble demanded the
pound of flesh; the Jew demurred and offered
money, which was rsfused. Sixtus, to whom the
matter was at last enbmitted, decided in favor of
the noble, with the provision that he should cut
exactly one pound of flesh—not one grain more
or less, on pain of being hanged. The noble
naturally declined the risk; the Pope fined both
parties in heavy sums for making such a wager.
Thus old Shylock's memory is viLdicated at last.
A Guys WIDOW. —lt is related that a man on
his death-bed called his wife to him and said:
I leave my horse to my parents ; sell him and
hand the money you get for him over to them.
But my dog I leave to you; dispose of him as
you think best." The, wife promised to obey.
So in due time after the death of her lord: she
started to find a market for tier animal. " How
much do you ask for your horse," inquired a
farmer. w I cannot sell the horse alone," she
replied, w lint I will sell you the horse and deg
together at a fair price for both. Give me $lOO
for the dog, $1 for the horse, and we oan trade
on those terms; and the cute widow conscientious
ly paid to the parents the. $1 she received for
the horse, and had to herself the $lOO for the
dog. Was she far wrong?
A LONG LOOK Arian.—A young Judy of eigh
teen was engaged to be married to a gentleman
of thirty-six. Her mother having noticed her
low spirits for BOMB time, inquired the reason.
"Oh, dear mamma," replied She, pettishly, "I
was thinking about my husband being twice my
