A Mord to the Jews.
lb the Editor of the Press:
SIB: In the Sunday Diapetch, of the ISth inst.,
ithd i very -well-written article—excepting
its nervous irritability—upon the Jews. Tho
writer is evidently one of the Sons of Abraham,
and extremely anxious for their good name.
Ile begins by a careful enumeration of their
trials, and a very fair statement of the pa
tience with - which they have been endured, and
then goes on to ilud fault with the way in
which their reputation is handled by the Glen
tile world ; and among other quotations and
comments makes the following:
_
" Again In Ths Press of Sth August, the cor
respondent signing himself "Its St. James,"
who has been contributing articles about
Texas. finds it necessary to adorn his tale with
a slap' at the Jew. The Jew says,' with
his Cheap John store, his pedlar's pack, his
knavery, and his "inonish, ,, is in every city
and on every road, doing his share of lying
anti of cheating the world, while waiting for
his destmy to be fulfilled and the tribes to re
turn to Jerusalem.' It is true the writer - does
not spare the Yankee but he does not give the
Yankee's religion. Why, then, should lie give
that of the Jewsl It was totally unnecessary."
Of this I beg aline. For the Jews, as the
first chosen "CltUrCh of God"-as "the natural
vine"-as apeople yet "to be gathered?' be
cause they are yet "to believe"—the writer
of Texas papers entertains a deep respect.
lie studies their strange history with great in
and looks forward to their ultimate con
version and restoration with unwavering'
faith. Were he to quote an example Of Sub.
missive endurance and long-taxed patience,
the Jews would rise first to his tongue, or flow
first from his pen. But unfortunately every
people, and the Jews among the rest, have a
double-sided shield about which the world
may tilt.
The pedling, trafficking Jew, that, with his
Cheap John store, or his pack, is found "in
every city and on every road" of a new coun
try, as an individual or a class, has a reputa
tion for "lying and cheating," as truthful and
as well established MS has his nation, or per.
haps himself, for patience and long-suffering ;
and nobody has the slightest right to find
fault with either the one or the other being
mentioned until they can be proved to be
false. That such are the characters of the pea
ling portions of the Jews, is certainly no fault
of one who mentions the fact. Nor does a
writer suppose himself responsible for the re
ligion of every body of whom he speaks a
kind word, nor abusing the religion of those
of whom he utters an unpalatable truth. The
writer of Texas papers, in one of them, spoke
of the praiseworthy exertions of the old
Monks to Christianize the Indians ; and, again,
of a sentiment of honor among rowdies and
murderers. But he still begs leave to insist
that he is himself neither a Jesuit, a Roman
ist, a rowdy, nor a naurderer, nor a lover of
any of them as such. And that, though lie did
"not spare thd Yankees," he is himself a Yan
kee and nothing else. But not being 'tender
footed, lie wrote of" Monks and murderers,
Jews and Yanks, exactly as he found them to
be and to have been in the country of which tic
was writing. He spoke of the Jew not tor the
Jew's sake, nor the Yankee for the Yankee's
sake, at all; but simply because it was as ne
cessary to a truthful description of the inhabi
tants of Texas as it was to speak of the sugar,
cotton, and corn, and the cattle and sheep,
when describing its productions. An honest
man treads squarely wherever he travels, and
leaves the corns to take care of themselves.
Sd far as to hitting the religion of either the
Jews ors the Yankees of Texas " a slap," Ito did
nothing of the kind; for, so far as he can
judge, after a long acquaintance, neither of
them have enough to brag over or quarrel
about.
If "lying and cheating" is the religion of
the Sons of Abraham, then he must plead
guilty. But he has never supposed it, and does
not now ; and surely no reader of the Old Tes
tament will, for a moment, fall into the error
of supposing that simply " waiting dor destiny
to be piped" is the religion of the pions Jew ;
and if not, then the fault-Anaing criticism in
the Dispatch is "totally unnecessary."
