g t II t 11 THURSDAY, AUGUST 17, 1865 METE CITY. Too LATE.—Reader, did you ever take a pOsition in the office of a live railroad com pany, where plenty of b thg l e ,3ss is done, in Order to study human nature when hope, dis may, anxiety, and di.sappointment were likely to be eXeited at the same monienti If not, take a seat with us for a few moments in the office Of the Camden and Atlantic Railroad ComPany, at Tine-strect wharf. The time is sixteen minutes past four o'clock, P. M. Col. Bryant, tbe agent, is at his post, up to his elbows in greenbacks, and with a bushel of currency to count. The mercury ranges among the Dineties. He has already pulled the bell, and the ferry-boat has left the dock. Excited man appears:" Sir, is the train for Long Branch goner "Just gone, sir." "Is there no way of getting Over the river I" "Can't encourage you, sir." "Do you think I could, catch the train if I go ever ill "If you can get over there soon enough there would be no difficulty at all, sir." "Do you know how I can get 'overt What time dOes the next boat go 1" "Fifteen. minutes, sir." "Oh my 1 can't go, that's sure; confound the luck, I atty." The excited man wiped the perspiration from his brow, became somewhat calm, and picking up his valise started doggedly away, realizing, perhaps, for the first time, that he had a load to carry, and that if he had started two minutes sooner he would have been in time. A lady appears—" What time does the Had donlield train start, sir 1" „ Half-past five o'clock, madam." "How much is it to go V' " Twenty-five cents, madam," The lady now stands back, and while she is examining her currency to select the required amount for a ticket, another lady steps up, and in breathless accents, says "Is the Atlantic train gone;" "Yes, madam 5 it started at 4.15, replied Col. Bryant, in his 'mufti blend style. "4.151" responded the aspirant for salt water recreation ; " is your clock right 1" t "Yes, madam ; chronometer time." "What kind of time, sir 1" " chronometer, madam." U W6ll,la that the same kind of time we have in Philadelphia?"' "Madam, that is the true sun time; we must be very particular to prevent accidents." This lady stepped aside, when the candidate for Haddonfield again secured an audience with the colonel. "I'll take one of them tickets for Madden. field," said she. • "Tickets for Haddonfield are obtained on , the other side," replied the colonel. The lady tvonesed the roadie. "Ticket for Long Branch 1" interrupted a tall, lean, lank individual, who desired to pay a visit to that interesting place to recuperate his physical iniirmities. " Too late, sir ; train is just gone. Another thing, we dont sell 'tickets to Long Branch; you get them on the othertide." - Two young ladies appear. "Two tickets for Atlantic City, please," said one of them, put ting down a faultless $.20 greenback. "Too late, ladies; boat started full three minutes ago." " There, Isis," Said one to the Other, "I thought we'd be too late." "Ms" put the end Of her parasol in her mouth and beat time buriedly on the floor with her foot. "It is too bad! too bad!" she ejaculated, at the same time, turning to the Colonel, coolly askedhins fOr a drink of ice water. Four ladies appear. " What is it, ladiesle inquired the gallant Colonel. "We want to go to Atlantic City," replied one for all the others. " Too late." 011, any I what shall we do! When does the next train go 1" "Half -past seven in the morning." " This evening, sir 1" " No, madam," said the Colonel, raising his his voice, "in the morning=to-morrow morn ing." These ladies retired ; and the last we saw of tbein, therwere being piloted, by Officer Hart, throngh horses and carts, draymen and Cab• drivers, to the sidewalk. These are sonic of the scenes that are enacted every day, at rail- road and, ferry stations. They lose much of nun -interest try airaple pen-ple ,"„ aS the parties must be seen in order to r'ILLY .onreciate their countenances, alternfir ting in _ anxious hope to "green and yellow melaneholy.” The Colonel Avails , rda.p.s rexernti3O_,:uaezd icas smut out ns nfs sanctum. The moral of these scenes is this: they prove the evil of procrastination. It is the thief of time, and robs mankind of happiness and con tentment of mind. Life itself is but a railroad track, from time to eternity. Philadelphia is one of the main stations ; and happy, indeed, will that person be, when he is about to take his flintl, trip, at the close of the season, if he does not and himself "Los /ate' for the train that leads to the bright and happy land of Canaan. Adjourned. Soldiers' Families. 2b the Editor of Vas Press; Sin: By - way . of appeal, pleage insert the 101' lowing letter in your columns : CITY resTou—Dear Sir : Some time last year I became acquainted with the bearer, Mrs. M. I understood then that she was the widow of a Union soldier killed at Gettysburg, and I have always believed such to be the case. After getting through With the amount paid her by the Government—which was due her husband at the time lie was killed—in supporting her self and her child, along, is, and has for long, long time, been sick. She managed, by sew ing, to work along till winter came on. Since then she has been endehvoring to get along without help, and has done so till a short time ago, when the child became so low that she was compelled to devote her whole time to it, or let it perish at once through neglect. Obliged to remain idle, without money, her case is a sad and touching one. I have learned, also, as might have been expected, from the party from whom she rents a room, that she is two months behind with her rent. Her landlady remarked at the same time, that While she pitied her, yet she could not afford to lay out of the rent. Noticing fora few weeks past that she looked sadder and more de pressed than usual, on inquiry, I learned the above, and other facts. Unable, in justice to myself, to give her such aid as she impera tively needs, I thought of sending her to you. I have felt some delicacy in doing so for one reason, viz., I have never been a subscriber to " City Pastor , ' fund, I can truly say, however, that it has notbeen for hick of interest in your good work, or for want of the disposition to subscribe, that I have not been such ; but sim ply because the terrible war just past—and wbich, praised be God, has ended so gloriously for the cause of truth and of right—caused us to be here for nearly two years now, with very little means. Mrs. M. expects to call on you to-morrow morning, and I trust you will be able to extend her some relief. lam satisfied that anything she may get will be property ap plied, as I have noticed that she has been al ways steady. I believe the case to be a deserv ing one, and it is certainly a very necessitous one. This ease was sadly touching—a little child in her arms, eighteen months old—thin, pale, death-like ; a perfect skeleton ; and no bigger than a child a month old, the soldier's widow fondled in her bosom with a mother's tederest care. a r m. To - appeal for holy ann. am — now discharging that sad but cheerful duty. The author of the above letter is one of our most reliable citizens, is a gentleman, and a lovely Christian, who, with his family, had to fly from the South for their Union sentiments. Will not Christian benevolence be directed to the relief of those families whose husbands and fathers have fought Our battles and fallen on every bloody battle-field to gain us peace and establish our nations Let the daughters of America do for the soldier's family at home what they did for the soldier abroad, and we will soon cease to hear of tales of woe and the cries of starving children.
