g4t Vress. TUESDAY, JUNE 27, 180 Hints to Bathers. At this warm SeSeen, when bathing is so popular, It will be well to observe the following practical hints, which we take from the London Sixpenny Magazine: On first iilungleg Into cold water there comes a 4hock which drives the blood to the central part of • the system. But immediately a reaction takes - place, which, assisted by the exercise of swimming, producing, even in water of a low temperature, an agreeable warmth. The stay in the water should never DO prolonged beyond the period of this Mite- Inent. If the water be left while this warmth con- Mm, and the body Immediately dried, the healthy glow over the whole inutile° will be delightful. "To remain in the water after the flint remotion Is over, produces a prolonged chilliness, a Shrinking of the flesh, and a contraction of the skin, by no Zones favorable to health or enjoyment ; for it Is only In water thoroughly warmed by the summer heats, where we may bathe for many hours with Impunity. "Certain precautions are necessary. Moderate •erercise, by summoning into action the powers of the system, and quickening the circulation, Is bet ter than inactivity. We should never Viola water Immediately after a meal, nor while the process of digestion is going forward. Nor should we plunge into the water when violently heated, or in a state of profuse perspiration. Such imprudences are often fatal, especially if the water be unusually Gold. If too warm, the temperature of the bitty may be reduced by bathing the body and wetting the head, • Before meals rather than after, and especially before breakfast and before supper, are proper BIM. Sons for bathing. The heats of the day are to be avoided, but in very hot weather a bath Is useful to cool the blood, and secure refreshing sleep. If In the middle of the day, a shaded place should be chosen, or the head protected from the sun by being kept wet, or by wearing a straw hat, as is ;moil/ma by the fashionable French ladies at their watering-places. "The sea IS the best place for Swimming. Owing to the greater specific gravity of salt water than fresh, the body Is more buoyant in it, as are other substances. A ship viming out of salt water Into fresh, sinks perceptibly in the water. The diffe rence 18 nearly equal to the weight Of the salt held in solution. The bottom should be of hard sand, gravel, er SitlioOth atones. Sharp stones and shells out the feet—weeds may entangle them. The swimmer must avoid floating gratis and quicksand Tee new beginner must be careful that the water does not ran beyond ble depth, and that the current cannot carry him into a deeper plane, also that there be no holes in the bottom. As persons are ever liable to acoldente, cramps, &c., it Is always best that boys or girls should be accompanied by those who are elder than themselves, and who win ba able to save them in any emergency." THE COURTS. rutted States District Court—Judge Caawateder. TED NAVT.TAIID ENDBZZLDMIDITS—JUDGB OLD. WALADDE MAIM A SUGGSSTION TO Tag GRAND . . Yesterday the Grand Jury of this court, altar a Mass of two or three weeks, Came in and presented an indictment against John Jenkins, late a deputy United States Marshal, cbarglnn him with re calving, harboring, and concealing a felon, via.: Robert K. Lee, who was convicted of defrauding the United States, by means of forged enlistment papers. In response to an inquiryby the Judge, the Grand Jury stated that they had before them no other busi ness for consideration, whereupon he addressed them as follows: Gerestamsar ow Tan Gwen Jain% You have nand certain indlotmeras for frauds alleged to have been practiced upon the Government of the linked States by persona employed in the public service at the Philadelphia if Yard. or at other places iu this district, where public, property was, or should have been kept for the Government by persons in the employment of the Navy Department. One of the parties charged in them, Indiannenta has beer tried and convicted- de the Other cases have not been tried, I will say as little as possible upon the subject of these allege d frauds. But the least which I can say cons istently with imperative re quirements of public ditty, Is that the subjeot appears tome to require such further investigation as a Grand Jury, In executing its independent function of Biqa'. .17 may, perhaps, be capable of making. The law Ol ean of the United statas have doubtless done all that could have been required of them. The Grand Jury, however, may make their Inquiries not only tinder suggestions of these law omoers . but also in dependently of such suggestions; and ft may occur that Inquisitorial proceedings, which would be ir regular on the part of the law officers may be pro perly Instituted. and, within certain limits, properly prosecuted by the Grand Jury. As to the extent or limits of such independent inquiries, the Grand Jury may, In eased of difficulty or doubt, consult with either the law officers or the court. There may Sometimes be no clftionity on the part of a Grand Jury in obtaining information enabling the law offi cers to frame Indictments which could not otherwise have been prepared. I recommend the subject to your Careful consideration. The Grand Jury then retired, and will doubtless take action In the matter, as suggested by the Court. V. S. Circuit Court—Judge Grier. B. 11. LIM% CASE. U. M. Lee, Convicted of doflaudlng the Govern ment by means of forged enlistment papers was in court, and it was expected would be sentenced. At Lee's request, through his counsel, the sentence Was, however, postponed till Wednesday (to• Mo rrow). IllAnirs or Quarter Sessions—Hon. Joseph 4.llison, SHOelste Justice. A new jury was in attendance yesterday, to serve until the close of the present term. Considerable time was consumed in calling the list, and in listen ing to and passing upon the excuses of such jurors as for various reasons, some valid and others trifling, desired to avoid serving. These matters having finally been disposed of, the current business of the Cern was proceeded with. Annie Johnson, residing in Sergeant street, near Tenth, was charged with having passed a counter feit fifty.doliar 'United States treasury note on Wm. Felon, a grocery and provision dealer in that neigh. borbood. According to his statement, the defendant, whom be knew, came to his store at an early hour In the morning, It being *merest) , light enough to Rol and having bought a hali•dellar'S Worth or groceries, Offered the note In question in payment. Tie bad some doubts as to whether it was genuine, but upon her assurance that It was a good note, he received it, and gave her $4.9.50 in change. Dis covering the note to be bad, he went to defendant's house, but she would not take it back or return his change, saying the note had been given her by a man, who had received from her the change, and gone away. Presenter then had her arrested. The note was not marked in any way by the prose• eutor or by the alderman before whom complaint WU made, and in whose custody it was left, and though it was Identified by the prosecutor on the stand as the note passed upon him by defendant, yet, in the absence of any certain mark put by him - upon it try which he could recognize it beyond mis take, the District Attorney thought, and also the court, that the identification was not such as would render It safe for a jury to convict upon. The de. Pendant was, therefore, acquitted. Michael Seating was acquitted of a charge pre fluted by his sister, Jane Earle, of the larceny of two hundred and forty-five dollars. According to her own story, she had given him the money for safe keeping, and it was, therefore, apparent that if he ever had U, which was denied, he, at altercate, had not stolen it. James Pollock, the keeper Of a tavern at Frank ford, war charged, by Parker Unsworth, with lar ceny, and with assault and battery. It appeared that there was no foundation for the charge of lar ceny, and the jury rendered a verdict of not guilty. The assault and battery was not dented, and the jury having rendered a verdict of guilty, Pollock was fined ten dollars and cost. John Young, for assault and battery on Dennis Berrigan, was fined ten dollars and coats. William Worthington and William McCormick, Conductor and driver of the Green and CdateHtfeete Passenger Railroad Company, were acquitted of a charge of assault and battery on Joseph IL Teagle, and he, in turn, was acquitted of a charge preferred by them of carrying concealed deadly weapons. THE POLICE [Before Mr. alderman Beltler.] DIMIONEST HELP. Elizabeth Sweeney, a Celt, was arraigned before Mr. Alderman Battler, on the charge of being die -honest whilst acting in the capacity of a help. The lair Elizabeth is only pure to outward appearance in her lily white hand. She has evidently never dabbled in dish-water, and washing clothes is seine thing evieently ntdinOWil to her, Her lace, how ever, 111 of the decidedly homely character, and her dress was not what might be expected, in these days, of a lady's maid. The poor thing forgot to wear a a waterfall, and have her bonnet out in half, but She did not forget to offer her services at various places as a help, and then steal all she could lay her ands upon and decamp. Alderman Bottler, with his usual cruel disposition, °maid not appreciate that fair hand of the fair Elizabeth, nor her penitent countenance, but sent her to prison. in default of 62,600 bail. When the fair•lianded Elizabeth His rellll3 Wort+ court she had better show her hand, and, mavhap, one of the twelve „Miffs may wok It handsome, and acquit her of her help-leas-uses. THE GONVIDEFOS Gems Philadelphia can boast of a. host of ship chandlerg, whose stores are stocked with all that Is necessary to have on shipboard. Of course, these gentlemen desire to dispose of their commodities to the best advantages, and keep their weather eye open to all stewards who wear the navy blue?) Now, one Waving A. Dixon, who, by the way, is called by the detectives a Spanish nigger—but we would call him an Indian—has visited these chandlers. llir. Bradley, of Sixth and Spruce streets, received an Order from OCtitVitlB, who represented himself as a ward.roont steward, which would amount to 42,000, and the tarsi Character quietly obtained a bottle of whisky, one of champagne, and one of Vine. This may have been considered MI a per gulling at the time, but when air. Bradley found that the stewardship of the Indian had ceased by Us ship being out of commission, he preferred a charge of swindling against the dusty individual. A host of chandlers came up and presented Bite of stores ordered by Octitvius, stating that he attempted to borrow money or obtain supplies from them, Otitavine has the almond eye of an In dian, and stood the testimony of the white man very well; but a scowl came over his countenance when one of Africa's dusty Sens charged him With steal how a revolver. A vietualler, commonly celled a butcher, next appeared against Octavian. Hie tes timony showed that his onriailty induced him to - overlook a list of stores presented by Octavius. and an item of beef attracted his attention. He quietly Informed Octavins that he could furnish the beef, whereupon five pounds of sirloin steak was obtained from him as a sample of what he could do Of course the steak was choice, and the jovial butcher laughed at the lava of being chiselled out of his best nook. The alderman sent the steward below, in default of WOO hail. MIXDAY SPORT. Jeremiah Blackburn° wields but one arm, but evidently has a talent for dog fighting on Sunday. Two of his dogs were nipping and tucking at each Other last Sabbath, when a son of Lieut. Paulin interfered to stop the brutal exhibition. lie. In the good old times of polioemen they looked for burglars try night: It Seems now that night has been turned into day by some of our smart youths. There is a certain alderman in this oily who always demands the penal code when he IEI puzzled, and manages to say to his constable, ' , Minds, band me the perodity code, and I will give this fellow the latest law." We trust this penality code may reach the Court of gamier Sessions In such a snaps as to punish theta house-breakers by day. Throe young Men Of the day clues were brought before Alderman Bonier yesterday on the charge Of robbing a house at Broad and Wharton streets in daytime. We looked at one of these brave fellows With some interest, and discovered in him the rde. De Wolfe who had vitriol thrown in his face by the mother of a girl he married, notwithstanding site was already married. This bravado said before the alderman he would go through fire for this wife of his, and we think he made a mistake when he pence trated a house where no one was living, and robbed It The modest sum of ehooobatt was asked for De Wolfe and hisaccompliees, 4 . ollll.lifertin and Daniel Jacobi,. ex U.DIGNAZT 'HOTEL 13.811 PER.
