The delfghful sensations attendant open bathing, the emu:llene softness of the skin, the renewed vitality of the frame, and the keen feelings of animal vivacity, are well known, and It has been truly remarked that If our people would give more :Mention to the -subject we would soon become a hardier lace than we fresh wimming May be per. formed either in salt orwater. In the former it is much more easily done, by reason of the greater spreine gravity of salt water, and its ooneequent greater buoyancy. The principal thing to be borne In mine by one begienbig to swim, is that whether in salt or fresh water the ,body is lighter than the quantity of water - displaced, and consequently, if one would be perfectly quiet in the water he, would that, and, therefore, It is important to observe that the more the body is immersed la the water the more easily will It be sustained. The system of learn.' leg to swim in use by Dr. Jansen, at the Nate,: , tother, we consider ' the only aciontilla mode of learning this beautiful and useful accomplish went, which has ,been brought,to our notice, and. by which hundreds of young Bolles and gentlemen' Lave, within the past threo years, become proficient In the art of swimming. His mode is as follows v 1143 learner being provided with suitable drawers or robes, the motion- of the hands is thoroughly' taught the learner, and. exercised by him previous to his entering the water ; after. which a band is placed around his body. just below the breast, and the band is then• fastened to a rope, which runs through a pulley made for the purpose;and he is euepuided by the rope in the water, and the' motion of the legs taught him, and .which he. exercises until he thoroughly understatals and pro. perly executes it. He is then secured by means or the nano to a rope, which is attached to a wheel: zunrar g In a groove along the ceiling a distance of. twelve or fifteen feet, and when he executes the mo-t Hone of the bands and met properly he moves Monet the length of the groove. Toe learner can alwaysl know whether he be executing the movements of hist tends and feet correctly by seeing whether he is' moving along the groove or not. After the learner' bas been on the railroad, as it is Called, often enough to mane the movements neeeeilary tO swim properly. Dr. Jansen puts him into deep water, and directs him to swim after a pole, which the doctor holds be. fore the learner, who will generally make four or dye strokes. 'When he gets scared at knowing that he can swim, he makes &desperate grab for the poles. He then nows nearly all that can ba taught him for plain swimming. Sometimes it is necessary to put him back on the 't ratiroad,” out as a general rule he' can wanner affairs himself thereafter. The whole. mystery of swimming is - often learned in three: lessens, and in a course of twelve lessons, one Is sere to become a swimmer. Diving, floating, and fancy; eveltomirg, is also taught It desired. The best time for bathing le in the morning bolero breakfast, and 'the next beet thne is before dinner. Immediately after dinner, or when the stomach Is full, is In juriens. Bathing more than once a day is also considered hurtful, 'Ponds -and stagnant water and a bottom of weeds or mud should always be avoided by bathers at d swimmers. In entering the water the head should be well wetted, as cold bathing has a conotaut teridendy to propel the blood and other humors toward the head. By ob serving this rule, violent headaches and other oomplaints proceeding from oold bathing might be prevented. The Swimmer is sometimes seized in the water with cramp, and. he should therefore be 'weltered for its attacks. The following instructions on the subject are given by an eminent writer : "As to cramp, those chiefly are liable to it who plum' into the water when they are heated, who remain In it until they are benumoed with cold, or even ex haust thernielyes with violent exercise. If attacked: . with cramp in the leg; the swimmer must strike out the limb with all Lis strength, thrusting the heat dowxward and drawing the toes upward, notwith standing the momentary pain It may occasion. The clouds relied on in their sublime magnificence, Until inn mem InSSEeS of them spread like 9.10 Immense black canopy over the sandy soil of western Nog Jersey, It is a well-established fact in nature, that reredos, tton or the atmoephere will draw in °Old air, and thus a breeze is formed.- • The power of the wind, or Its berceneee or velocity, depend upon the extremes of tie beat and cold. As the clouds hovered over the. burhing sande of New Jersey on Monday alter noon, the two degrees of temperature coining in elontact, that is the coldneaa of the clouds and rho extreme beat of the sand, a pretty severe wind resulted, of a whirling motion. The ling, whir it. seemed from a distant standpoint, was perpen dicular, and therefore not as destructive as If bort. zontal. In a few moments the landscape along the river (rent in Jersey was hidden from view. In a few minutes the wind came up strong from the east ward, bearing with it the fragrance of pines, which man) in our city may have noticed through the Medium of their olfactory nerve. Quito a shower of sand reached the; terry-heals that were half way tierces the river. :.Preeently rain commenced fall ing, anti so trentinued Moderately for half an bee; thus eettling the 'dust as well aa the mercury. The scene from the Pennsylvaula side of the river, of Jersey made volatile, in its apparently immense columns of sand moving from north to south and westward, induced the belief that serious damage Into been done. We believe, however, that nothing more serious resulted than the shifting of one plan tation to another, to be 'returned, of coarse, when. ever a contrary storm occurs. It was unquestlem ably tie extreme heat of the sand that caused the whirlwind. A few passengers who came from At lantic City on Mond a y eveving, reported that a more -ples.eatit any was never experienced at that great public resort. The great heat of the past few days ceased the cooling eels breeze to set in there at one o'clock On. Monday—nearly two hours earlier than usual. Speaking of this popular resort, we may state that the Sunday mall train oommenced running on the 4th inst., and will continue during the season. The boat .will leave Vfne-street 'wharf at. half ast o'clock on every t unday morning, reaching the Sea. side cityin" time for Divine worship, if any of the. passengers should feel so inolined. They will find a Methodist, Presbyterian, and Catholic ()Munk located by the sea, for the accommodation orthe re- Ifylcusly inolined. BOBBED, This has become a stereotyped expression, and wilt remain-so until" returning soldiers keep aloof from strange rumshops. Yesterday afternoon a young man named, or, rather, giving the name of John Collin, was arraigned on the charge of steal• Ma $l5O from Wm. E. Fogg, a returned soldier, re siding at ilB Marriott street. It appears that soldier, while on his way home, sibipped at a tavern in the vicinity of Sixth and Shippen streets, where , be was met by four or five young fellows, who at' once ocingratulated him upon his safe return, shoot[ hands, and made themselves generally familiar with him. lie supposed they were friends, nod asked them to join with him in a social drink. Of course they could not refuse. The party crowded around him at the bar, and one of them removed tho afore. said sum of $l5O from his pantaloons mckot, He felt . It going out, but so adroit was the act performed ad to defy detection. Some one in the crowd had stolen the money. The prisoner was nearest the loner, and pressed pretty bard against him. He was therefore arreatediand committed for trial. STILL MOBS . DARING ROBBERY . . Pusey E. Chambers was arrested on complaint of a clilzen named John 13. Munyan, yesterday after noon, on the charge of robbing , a recently returned soldier, named Andrew Fleck, of the sum of an. This was a barefaced robbery. It seems that Fleck, still in military uniform, desired to purchase a suit of citizen's clothing, and in company with Cham. bore, went to the tailor store, No. $26 Market street. The soldier tried one pair of pantaloons and nave his old ones to Chambers to hold for hior. While the soldier paiitrying a vest on, Chambers throw the old pantaloons on the floor. and' a momentary opportunity offering, he left the store suddenly. r. rdunyan, however, saw him remove the money item the paeketS o f the soldier's old pants and followed after him. Upon reaching the first police officer Mr. M. gave him the neeenery information, and Chambers found himself 'ln the lockup. The stolen money was found upon Mm. In the meantime, the soldier felt for his money to pay for his new suit, and his astonishment may be Imagined by not finding it. He went In search of Chambers, but could not fled him. The police and Mr. Munyan- proceeded to ascertain the where shouts of the soldier, end success orowned their efforts.' He appeared at the Central Station last evenirg, and atter a bearing Chambers seas own mittedlikaisswer. Upon the person of the prisoner was an cfficlal document 'found that Sete forth his tine character.. Ile says that he belonged to the suet/tau Regiment. On May 211 he was tried and convicted In our criminal court, and sentenced to four months' Imprisonment. On the ad of the pre sent month the judge reviewed the sentence, and the prisoner was restored to liberty on iYlonday. He was committed at the Central last evening so answer the charge of robbing Mr. Fleck. • [Before Mr. Aldermen Hurley.] litrllDll/101:16 A.eBAULT UPON A sca.DrER A colored man named Edward Itlechieg, was ar rainged yesterday afternoon on the charge of own mating a murderous assault and battery upon Monies Shepley, a veteran volunteer, who returned to this, his native city, yesterday morning. It seems from tboUvidence that the soldier and three others were walking along Market Street near Sixth ; Shop. ley had occasion to go alongside of a cart for a few moments, whereupon the defendant ordered him away ; the soldier replied that he would not go until it suited him. It Is alleged that the prisoner pulled out a pocket knife, the blade being nearly four neb es in length, and attempted to drive the soldier away ; the latter threw up his arm, and receivel a pretty severe gash In it from the weapon. Kinch tng was then caught by the soldier, and held until a pollee othoer, who was called for, arrived. The de fendant was required to enter bail in the sum of .800 to answer at court. There - was some surprise manifested in the magis tTate,e ffice because the soldiers did not at once recent the assault In a summary manner. The sol diers replied that they bad had quite enough fight ing during the past three years, but- in the city of Philadelphia they desired to sustain the peace. The man who was attacked said he could probably have killed the - colored men, but he did not dears to do so. [Before Mr. Recorder Eisen.) ALLIKIND "ZIOKPIXIKET. Albin Wlie, alias Henry Simpson, wag arrested last evening,• at Seventh and Chestnut streets, on the oha-ke of picking the pocket .of a man named David Lickle. It is alleged the .prisoner extracted the book or port morainic from .Pdr. L.'s pooket, and handed to his " pal," who went "through it," bat finding no money threw it away. The operation was observed by a citizen, who at once arrested Wire, and handed him over to the custody of a pc- Übe officer.
