The merit of Lord Derby’s translation may be sum
med.up in one word. It Is eminently attractive; it Is
uzLßttaeb with Ufa • it may be read with fervent interest;
ills immeasurably niarer. than Pope to the text of the

over again and again. * * * Lord Derby has given
to us a version far more closely allied to the original,
and superior to any that has yet bees attempted in the

tion, in 2 voir., with twenty illustrations. Crown Svo.
Price $5
The object of this work is to exhibit Cicsro not merely
as a statesmen and an orator, but as he was at home in
the relations of private life, as a husband, a father, a
brother, and a friend. Bis letters are full of interesting
details, which enable us to form a vivid idea of how
theoldEomsss lived 2,000 years ego; and the biogra
phy embraces not only » history of events, as moment
ous as any iu the annals of the world, but & ]&ff&
amount of anecdote and gossip, which, amused the
generation that witnessed the downfall of the republic.
' _ From the-London Quarterly.
Mr. Forsyth produces what we venture to say will
become OnB Of the daisies of-English biographical litera
ture, and whl be welcomed by readers of aliases and
both sexes, of all professions and of no profession at all,

HISTORY OF EFGL4KD, F&OM THE FALL OF
WOOLSBY TO TBE DEATH OF ELIZABETH. By
James A. Proude, hi. A., of Exeter College, Oxford,
from the fourth Louden, edition, in. crown Sro vote.
Price $2 CD each. The first two volumes jnut ready.
The other volumes will follow shortly.
Mr. Froude has shown In bis admirable history what
new remits may bo derived, evon in the most beaten
track> from & thorough investigation of the original au
thorities. S? is researches have thrown a flood of light
over the personal character of Henry YIIL, and his
relation to the great events of modern history, the re
formation of religion in Europe and the British Isles,
that it would be in vain to seek elsewhere.
The work has received the most favorable notices
from the leading English journals, and has already
passed through four editions in England. The vast
amount of and authentic materials which the au
thor has brought to b?ar on the period of Which he
writes, give his work an interest and value bsyo&d any
previous history of the same events.

THE TAX-PAYERS’ MANUAL.
, t . Containing the entire Internal Revenue Laws,
with the Decisions and Bnlings of the Commissioner,
Janies of Taxation, Exemptions, Stamp-Duties, &c.,
and u Complete Alphabetical Judex. Prepared by hou.
GoorgeS. Uoutwcll, late Commissioner of Internal Re
venue. Svo. $l,
This volume contains the act of June 30th ,*1954, with
the amendments made by the act of March 3d, ISGS, in
troduced into the act of Juno 30th. Ami wherever the
amendment struck out any part of the previous act and
substituted new provisions, these new provisions am
introduced in their appropriate places instead of the
parts reppaled by the amendment,
By the act of June 30th, various earlier acts of Con
gress relating to the collection of the revenue were re
vived and made apart of the excise-law. These acts
and parts of acts, so far as they are applicable, are also
inserted in this volume, and printed immediately after
lit© sections by which they were incorpoxatcd iuto the
existing lair.
This arrangement of the law, designed as the basis of
a Manual for tho use of ta x-payers and officers engaged
in tho administration of the law, will, it ia thought, bo
found equally trustworthy and far more convenient
than a work which should contain only tho various
laws entire, in the form in which they stand on the
statute-book.
Tlw> rates in the table of duties correspond to the rates
fixed by the act of March 3d, 1565.
The rulings were prepared at the Office of Internal
Bcvenne, and are based mainly upon letters written
from the ofllce upon the various subjects treated.
