by a glance at European affairs. The in
fluence of the banker upon even the most

a mere surmise of how the “ balance” at

power” to morrow.
But our own present history contains no
Euck secret page where the loves and hates of
Lombard or Jew turn the scales of justice
it embarrass the operations of our Govern
ment. That clever brain which has con
quered its way to the throne of France,
and now so cleverly manages what it so
cleverly won, first attempted the policy of
raising a national loan from the people.
What that brilliant statesman succeeded in
accomplishing on a small scale for his own
advantage has been done by American
patriotism to an extent that amazes the
world, and gives a glorious proof of the
perpetuity and solidity of our Republican
pystem, A lOftfi Of one hundred millions
of dollars in a single week shows that the
money of the nation is as freely devoted to
;!s service as the lives of its brave citizens.
Vive la Babnum ! —As we expected,
Babncm is already looking up the balmo
ral, crinoline, etcetera, worn by Davis on
the occasion of his capture. It is said that
he offers five hundred dollars for the arti
cles. As Babnum is eminently loyal, and
Withal proverbially benevolent,-we volun
teer the suggestion that, if he succeeds in
obtaining the aforementioned curiosities,
he appropriate at least one-half the pro
ceeds accruing from their exhibition to the
orphan children of our brave soldiers and
sailors.
A Coincidence. —After the assassina
tion, as Booth jumped on the stage, he
brandished a huge knife. Davis, when
about to be arrested, flourished the same
kind of-a weapon.

Consternation Over the Emancipation
Order~The Slaves to be Obliged to
Work.
Gbbhnsbobo, May 4.—General Schofield's or
der, deolarlDg the slaves of this state free, created
great consternation, as the labor of the slaves was
wanted to put in the spring orops, and the slaves
refused to work, declaring that their former masters
owed them a living.
Major General Oox, of the Twenty-third Corps,
has relieved the anxiety of the people by telling
them that the slaves will be obliged to wort and
support themselves.
Hon. John A. Gilmer has commenced dividing his
lands up among hla slaves, furnishing them with fa
cilities to work with. Other masters will lollow the
example.
Gen. Schofield’s course 'gives universal satisfac
tion.

BATTLE NEAR MATAMOROS---MOVE-
MENTS OF TROOPS.
St. Louis, May ie.—Despatches from Cairo say
that General Mejia, with 4,500 Liberal troops, ap.
peered before Matamoros on the 29th ultimo, and
demanded its surrender, which was refused. The
Imperialists inarched out to meet them, and a caval
ry and, artillery light occurred.
Business was suspended at Matamotos, and the
streets were barricaded In expectation of an attack,
but all was quiet up to the evening ol the 2d,
The custom-house officers fled to Brownsville, and
the wealthy oltizens moved all their valuables to the
same place.
Bight htffidred troops arrived at the monthuf the
Rio Grande on the 2d, and left for the Interior the
next day.
A report reached Bagdad on the 4th that the Li
berals were In lull retreat.

Business of all kinds Is very quiet, and as to the
stock market th< r? exists an unqualified stagnation.
Government leans were offered sparingly at the
Board, and the sales were light at rather lower
figures. The 1831 s aold at 109 x—a decline of Xi
the 5-208 at 104, and the 7-303 at par. Nothing was
said In the 10 40 loan. State and City loans con
tinue very quiet. Of the latter there were some
sales of new at 93, which Is a slight decline. There
Is no market for the bonds of railroad companies,
except at a material decline in prices. The only
sale reported was Philadelphia and Erie 6s at 93.
The share list shows a continued weakness. Bead
ing opened strong at 47;,', tut afterwards declined
to 40, which was the Closing figure of the previous
day. Pennsylvania RaiUo&d improved ;i, a feW
lots having been disposed of at 54. Camden and
Amboy was steady at 128, andOatawlssa oommon at
11%. North Pennsylvania sold at 24—a decline of 1,
and Philadelphia and Erie at 20X—a decline of 1% ;
30% was hid for Little Sohnylklll; 56 for Minehlll;
62 for Ljbigh Valley; and 26% for Catawlssa pre
ferred. There Is very little Inquiry for olty passen
ger railroad securities. (A lot of Aroh (consolidated)
sold at 10 H, and Tenth and Eleventh at 15; 20% was
bid for Spruce and Pine; 43 for Chestnut and Wal
nut ; and SO for Green and Coates; 61 was asked for
West Philadelphia; 12 for Aroh street; 8 for Baoe
and Vine; and 26 for Girard College. Canal shares
were more active, and prices better, Lehigh Navi
gation sold at 60, and Suiquchanna Canal at
20% was bid for Schuylkill Navigation preferred ;
25 was asked for Schuylkill Navigation common
and 90 for Morris Canal common; 34 for Delaware
Division; and 69% for Wyoming Canal. Bank stocks
meet with moderate Inquiry. The sales Include
Mechanics’ at 28, and Girard at 49X. There was
very little movement In oil stocks,- and prices were
generally weak. Speculation In oil lands, however,
continues active, and large traots of hitherto unde
veloped territory are being sold to enterprising men,
who, notwithstanding the present dullness of the
slock market, seem determined to push forward their
pri'jtols to a success. There are yet many acres of
gcod land In Venango county that await develop
ment, and which will doubtless be bronght on the
market this summer by new companles. The region
of Hemlock Creek Is that to which the attention of
capitalists seems now to be directed.

The New York hanks last week appear to have
turned about five million of their legal-tender Into
loans and discounts. The increase of the latter Is
about equal to the decrease in legal tender, which,
however, still figures for *61,052 657, exclusive of the
sums held by the National banks not in the clear
log-house. These would raise the total of legal
tender money in all the banks to about seventy mil
lions. The Bpecle averages stand three and a hap
millions lighter than last Monday, and for the fort,
night *4,603,318 higher, while the treasury office la
New York has paid out *3,165,720 lor May interest
during the fortnight, Is excess of the receipt* Cf
gold for customs for the same two weeks. The bank
statement altogether ladloatesno change In the Tree
and cheap supply of money, nor do we find other
signs of tightening the movements of the market.
We learn that the Court House In Richmond, Va.,
was destroyed by the great conflagration, April 2d,
and with it many Invaluable documents. This is
especially the ease of the land records deposited In
the archives of the general court. Their destruc
tion will Involve many great landedlnterests lu liti
gation, probably a fact that requires more general
Interest when it Is known that the chain of title to
all the lands In Western Virginia was preserved
bore, and that the immense interest of tha whole
coal and oil region of that section were at stake.
The laws of Virginia, as regards the records of
deeds, must be peanllar, or they never would have
been recorded here at all; but It appears that here
was the only record by whloh present possessors
could have traced back their title to the original
grantees. That this state of affairs will open a vast
field of litigation, that will by no means be left un<
tilled by unprincipled attorneys, it is easy to fore
see, and doubtless many of the craft already see a
rich harvest awaiting them.
Oil is held at higher prices at the weilsj and the
foreign demand Is held to be steadily Increasing.
Under these circumstances It Is highly probable that
the price of good oil stocks will shortly.advanoe,
even if gold docs decline turtker.
Foreign Importations have for a long time been
iemwknbly light. The bare markets of the great
cities would seem to rendor a revival Of our Euro
pean trade an aotnal necessity. In view of the
present heavy gold-bearing debt, and the early con.
vertiblllty of the seven-thirty Into the same, an In
crease of customs oolleotlon of coin would be very
welcome.

Business In Richmond is beginning to Improve;
some classes of goods are already plenty, but there
Is a deficiency In staple groceries and fancy artlolOS
of whatever description.
The New York Express says It has good authority
for stating that Sir Harry Half de Houghton, pro
prietor of the pro-rebel organ In Liverpool, the
Standard, had X 1,750,060 Invested In the Confede
rate cotton loan. He took one-tenth of the entire
loan at par—and hls punishment ■Py this time, we
fancy, must be something more than he can bear.
The North American and Italian Steamship Com*
pany, chartered at the late seßslonof the New York
Legislature, was organized last week. The vessels
of this Hue, whloh are expeoted to commence their
trips In a very short time, will run between New
York snd Genoa, touching at Madeira and Oifflz.

A Gbbat Patbmt Washiko Machine.-^We
yesterday examined at Messrs. S. Macferran *
Co.’s, No. 721 Chestnut street, a patent Washing
Machine which onght to find its way into every
household. The Machine Is the Invention of Mr.
John S. Lash, of Carlisle, who can be seen at 721
Chestnut street, for a few days, In reference to the
pnrebase of State and county rights. As we In
variably decline endorsing the value of any patent
article until It is practloally demonstrated in our
pies once, we subjected tbls machine to a like ordeal.
The Inventor availed himself of several well-soiled
sheets, one or two shirts, and a few dirty col.
IMS, which, With the aid of a bucket of hydrant
water and a little hard soap, he presented per
fectly clean lu an Incredibly short time by the
aid of this machine. The latter Is the most simply
constructed Washing Machine ever offered to the
public. Its modus operandi Is almost exactly the
same as hand-washing, excepting that it Is less lu
jurions to the fibre of articles washed. As a test of
this, Mr. Lash thrust In a twenty-dollar greenback
with a soiled collar. The collar came out In precise
ly thirty seconds, as dean as a new pin, the green
back test, but uninjured. The moohlno oan be used
without splashing a drop. Any part of a garment
can he submitted to the hardest washing at will,
and by the aid of a spring it Is Impossible to submit
any portion to Injurious pressure. Either one or a
half dozen shirts can be washed in three minutes’
time. We regard these machines as Invaluable to
the eemrort and convenience of every family, and
are glad to find that so competent, and enterprising

A Company has been formed under the Htalhg Laws
of Pennsylvania, of the above name, for the pur
pose of supplying Coal to its members at prime cost,
and you are hereby solicited to become a participant in
its benefits.
The stock of the Company has been divided into 85,-
000 shares, at $lO per share, making a capital of 9290,-
000, of which $60,000 is set apart for working capital.
It is the intention of this Com pair to furnish each of
its stockholders with one gross ton (3,240 pounds) of coal
annually, for each share of stock held by them daring
the existence of this Company (whloh has been char
tered for sixteen yean) at cost, if the stockholder de

The mine will now yield 40:000 tons of ooal per year,
and can readily be made to double its present produc,
tian at a very small cost. The supply may bs said to be
inexhaustible, for, so far as the existence of this Com
pany is concerned, it certainly is so. . . „

machinery and personal property necessary and usual to
