“The Hooking Valley lieeon tho weetern border of
the great Apalachian Mineral Basin, which extends
from Northern Pennsylvania seven hundred and twen
ty milee to Central Alabama. It Is from this basin,
perhaps the richest in the world, that Pennsylvania,
Virginia, Ohio and Kentuoky, draw their immense
supplies of Coal, Iron, Salt, and Petroleum. While
throughout the vast extent these four staple minerals
are found in variable quantities, and not unfrequently
grouped together, it Is rare that an? one locality pro
duces them all In large quantities. Yet In the Hoeklug
Valley, yea, within a radius of twenty miles from the
county seat of Athene county, are to he found Inex
haustible stores of Coal, Balt, Iron, and Oil; of these
Petroleum is the last discovered, or, I might perhaps
say. tho last appreciated, and. henso tho least deve
loped. It has for many years been known to exist In
many localities of the valley, particularly in tne vici
nity Of Athens, Athens oounty. Those best qualified to
judge, speak most promisingly of the oil la Athene
•onnty,"
It is the Intention of this Company to immediately de
velop their territory by sinking a number of walls.
We would here state that a twenty barrel well of Lu
bricating Oil, such as is found in this section of Ohio,
Is worth *26 per barrel on tho ground, equal to *5OO per
day, or over *lBO,OOO per annnm, being nearly four
times the cost of the whole number of corporate Inte

This Company owns in fee staple one hundred and
seventy- five aces of land. It is situated on both sides
of HORSE SHOE RUH, about two miles from tho town
of WEST UNION, PRESTON COUHTY, WEST VIE

Os the adjoining farm tha owners, seven years sines,
endeavoring to strike a vein of coal, of which a heavy
vein is known to underlie this tract at tho depth of
thirty (30) foot, struck op, tat njt knowing the charac
ter or value, made no further developments.
On the run which passes through this property the in
dications of oil are strongly marked, not only from the
peculiar upheaval and dip or lay of the sandstone rock,
and intervening beds of shale Incident to all sure oil
bearing lands, tat also from tho ocular demonstration
of It upon tho surface of the water. It has been, and Is,
the custom of the fishermen In the neighborhood to
light their faggots at night by setting fire to the oil
floating upon, the water. Salt Works have been aban
doned In consequence of the oil interfering with the
manufacturing of the same. The large proportion of
bottom land In this tract, vis: eighty (80) acres, fives
it great ad vantage over most tracts of this else, as them
le ample room for boring. one hundred and sixty wells.
A number of lease, may be made, paying a good royalty
without any expense to the Company. It is well to re
member that in this locality oil has been struck In pay
ing quantities, at a depth of from thirty to one hundred
and fifty feu. A competent superintendent has been
engaged. Two engines, with alt tho necessary ma
chinery, will be forwarded at once, and the work
vigorously pushed forward. Quo 10-barrel well wll
pay over 100 per cent, on the investment, and it is con
fidently expected that oil will be struck In large quan -
tities, and that the stock will rise to par soon after it is
all taken.
It is anoted fact that the famous Llewellyn and Eter
nal Centre wells of West Virginia dowel, the former
1,400, and the latter SCO barrels per day, and there Is
no reason why we cannot expect to bo as successful in
our operations. Five Companies (two Baltimore, two
Philadelphia, and one Now York, j have already com
menced operations in the vicinity of the ” Golden
Rule Company,;’ one of which has already struck oil,

The propelty of this Company is in the centre of the
Oil reiion, and consists of the following;
80. 1. The entire working interest, drawing one-half
the Oil, In one sere on Watson Flats, on which is situ
ated the Kellogg Well, now producing from twenty to
thirty barrels per day.
80. 1 One-sixteenth working interest in one and
ene eighth acres on the Hcßlhenr Farm, between the
Sherman and Smpire Wells. On this lease a well has jast
been struck, and is estimated to be producing about
two hundred barrels per day.
So. 3.- Binety-seven and a half (9 7)0 acres, in fee
simple, witbont any royalty or reservation whatever,
known as the Bennyhoff Farm, v adjoining the Smith
Jones Farm, on Oil Creek. Over two-thirds of this is
boring territory, and producing Wells are on every
side oi it. There is also a heavy growth of oak, az
a small capital, and while tbs chances for large wells
are excellent, a small one will enable the Company to
pay large dividends. One well offortybarrels per day
will yield to the Company about ten per cent, per
month. It is expected from the present production the
Company will receive from two to three per cent, per
month, with the prospect of a large increase as soon as
the proper machinery is pat Into operation.
The work of sinking wells will be commenced imme*
diately and prosecuted with the utmost vigor under the
direction of a practical add energetic superintendent
and the supervision of the president, who has.had a
lafge experience in the oil region.

No. It designated as Salmon Creek Tract, consists of
600 acres, in fee simple, situate on both hides of Salmon
and Little Salmon Creeks, tributaries of the Tionesta;
and about one-eighth of a milelfrom the latter stream.
This region Is now exciting a groat deal or attention.
Developments, both above and below ns, on the Salmon
and Tionesta Creeks, justify the expectation that this
district, »"» certainty of production, will vie with the
famous Oil Creek, while the quality of the Oil thus far
obtained is very superior to that of Oil Crook, avoraring ’
about 96 per cent, clear, and bringing about *BO per
barrel at tho wells. Wo - have a large amount of first
rate boring territory, and Intend sinking at least three
wells on this tract this spring.
Ho. 2 consists of a one-tenth undivided interest in the
fee staple of the-Mill Dam Farm, containing forty- flye
acres, on both sideß of Cherry Run, at Plummer, Corn
planter township, Venango eonnty. Any comments
now as to the value of this territory would be super
fluous, as development! have proved it to bo unfailing
in Oil. Some of the best wells in the country are on
this Bun—among others the Seed, Batter, Auburn, and
Granger, producing from one hundred to three RuAr
died barrels each per day. Thirteen wells are new
being boreA on thi, tract, for whioh the Company fur
nish no capital, but receive a royalty of all the Oil-pro
dueed. It is beHeyed that this interest alone will pay
a good dividend on the capital. - - ;
6,000 shares of the Reserved Stock ‘have already been
taken, which leaves less than 7,000 share* open at sub

A CARD TO THE PUBLIC.
By an order from the War Department, received this
day, March 13th, lust, every Veteran who desires to
emiet in the Ist Army Corps, to be commanded by
Msjor -General Winfield S Hancock, must make his
affidavit, when he is enrolled, as to hm ratideuee,
naming the Congressional district and the sub-district.
This will prevent any advantage being taken of him by
any runner or'other . recruiting agent in any ward or
township in the country, where the inducements of
larger- local bounties are held out than in other wards
or townships.
The subscriber desires H to be distinctly understood
that he did not in any of his advertisements, handbills,
or postersagree to cash any warrant issued by the city,
nor-hat he been famished any means to do so.
Most of the wards in Philadelphia have advertised to
cash the city warrants, and It fs thought that in a few
days a perfect system will be adopted to this effect.
Every veteran relieves a drafted man; therefore,
every person should become a recruiting officer.
