Battle-Field-
To the Editor of The Frets:'
Sib * our caption designates one ofthe most unique
and valuable of modem works of art. Tie term em
ployed li a rare one, bat a simple Illustration will
give the significance of “isometrioal.” Sketch in
dividually eaoh square rood of an Immense area
from Us immediate vicinity, and then place eaah
sketch In Its proper order on a table—standing be
fore It, with the eye at an angle of gay thirty de
grees, and at a alngle glance you thus bring the
whole lute view. Precisely this la what the author
ef this work, Colonel Bachelder, has done for the
twenty-five square miles of territory embraoed In
this historic battle-ground; and done It, too, In snoh
a way that the remotest form-house or tree la as
diEcemable as the stone-wall seemingly at your feet.
TEa pains-taking with which this result has been
reached Is astonishing, and In ..particular that de
partment of our artist’s labors which compelled him
to fix the various and changing positions occupied
by our own and the enemy’s troops during the three
days of bloody struggling for the mastery. Suffice
It to say, that this had to be done, by personal con
sultation with rebel officers and men prison
ers, and by visiting eaoh of our regiments- and bat
teries at the front, and holding a personal consulta
tion with their officers, eaoh locating their own posi
tion. ..
The charm ®r the picture, however, is in the novel
and suooessM mode by which the spectator oan
trace the progress of the battle to,its dose. This
has been dono by skilfully employing different
colors to indicate the changed positions of the vari
ous divisions and corps of the two armies. And—
with the “red, white, and blue” before you—there
is the absence, seemingly, of only the bogle.oall and
drum-beat, the roaring of cannon and. musketry,
and the groans of dying and wounded men, from the
awful actuality. It must he thrilling te see an In
telligent veteran, who participated In the battle,
catch a sight of this reproduction of It—he would,
we think, literally “ shoulder his crutch and show
how battles were lost and won,” bat In this ease
won forever. An agent will call on our citizens.
The following extract of a letter Is only one
among many from offioers who took part In that
battle:
»I have never seen a painting dr topographioal
map that oould give so vivid a representation of a
great battle. I regard it as an honor that you have
associated my name with that of other corps oom
mkhders In your hlstorlo picture.
“ Respectfully yours, ■
■* 0.0. Howabd, Major General.”
To the Editor of The;Fress :
Sib: I desire to correct a false construction, put
upon an application for a charter for a farmer’s
market on Horth Second street, Philadelphia: The
true intention of-the bill is to establish a wholesale
wnd retail market on that street, to be owned, occu
pied, and managed by. farmers. The bill expressly
says that six out of the nine managers shall be
farmers, and five of them shall be farmers residing
In the connties of Montgomery and Books. AU the
stock that is subscribed for this bill Is by farmers,
and they do not ask the street to be cleared until
theyhave provided themselves with a place for their
accommodation. I would pray ask what is the use
of the farmers moving Into a market-house and
leaving the hucksters and shine ers still keep the
market In the street, and why, If it was proper to
abolish the ourhstone markets on Market street and
Eighth street, It Is not equal ly proper to do the same
thing on Seoond street i Eabmbb,
FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL.
Tie most important mo'vei&'etfc in financial circles Is
the rapid absorption by the public of the 7 B*lo loan.
The arrangements made by Ur. Jay Cooke, Treasury
Department agent* are working as efficiently in placing
this loonaa in the case oft the 6*20 bonds. These Trea
sury 7 3*lo notes offer unusual advantages; the daily
receipts wilt range from three to four millions of dollars.
The loan is likely, to* command a premium after the
whole amount ia taken. The ffdvai tages of these bonds
are evident. They offer a good opportunity- to banks
and capitalists fofthe employment of their funds, be
cause they pay more than the legal rate of interest In
currency, besides being payable in greenbacks at the
end .of three years, or convertible into 8 cent gold
interest*bearing bonds, at the option of the holders.

A warehousing company has recently ejected petro
leum stores in Boston, which are claimed to bs models
in all respects in Brooklyn, H. T. The buildings arc
of brick, and the oil is put Into iron tanks, forty-two in
number, each 20 feet high and 10 feet In diameter, with
a capacity of 12,500 gallons, or an aggregate of 625,000
gallons. The oil is emptied from the barrels into iron
receivers sunk in the ground, and pumped into the
tanks by means of a caloric engine and rotary pnmp.
The premises are well ventilated, so as to permit the
Bree exit of any gases escaping from the oils. The in
ventors of this plan of storing oils claim that the cost of
Insurance is reduced, that&saving is effected in leak
age, and that a uniform quality of oil can he depended

Business. —We have nothing new to notice as regards
the operations in Oil. Prices were unsettled. There was
a larger demand for refined for export West Prices,
however, were unchanged. Trade will nee? ss&rily be re
stricted until we have a resumption of navigation to the
oil regions. That event, we feel pretty safe In assert
ing. will take place. Our latest from OU Glty repre
sents the ice gorge a short distance below that place.
The present warm weather, however, will Boon remove
that obstruction to navigation. Until then we shall
have bat little to say about Crude Oil. The amount of
Oil destined for this market is large. There is any
amount of speculation as regards prices when the mar
ket opens. We prefer waiting until we shall be able to
Speak by authority. The sales were larger than the
previous day. The operations which came under our
