    Telegraphic Mistaken.
TO the Editor of The Press:
But: In last Monday's issue of your valuable
paper you told us " Horn mistakes may be mate by

Mistakes are made on almost every telegraph line,
leis a matter of the greatest interest how they May
best be avoided. The - Telegrapher suggests - a
change of the Morse alphabet, and gives as a reason
therefor that the letters a ands cannot be safely em.

Such a change is net altogether new. It his been
attempted by various partles,.but without success.
Those who think themselves Incapable of transmit.

than seek such an excuse as that of attempting to

feeling, and that was to relieve the city from a

could in the formation of the Birney Brigade.
Mr. Franklin has been appointed by the Presi

SCHOOL TRACEUIR VS. PASANT.
The cace2of Michas/ Carlin, convicted of committing
en assault and battery' on a school teacher, named
Francis Belden, wan taken up. Mr. Carlin nude a
statement to the Court saying that in 1802 a child of his
was beaten at a nubile school, from the effects of which
le died. When he heard of the beating billeted
upon his hut child by Mr. Belden he went there and
equated off at the teacher but did not strike him.
Judge Ludlow said the case was patiently tried, and
the law laid before the jury as explicitly as it could pos
sibly be done by the court. Tide boy certainly anted in
a very obstinate manner, and the teacher, in express
ing Me determination to subdue him, did right. The
court - could not too strongly condemn parents enter-
Ina a school house and tatter the iaw into their own
auds. On the other hand, the dlestpline of the school
mast be exercised with great care end caution. Teach
ers should remember that they etand in the Place of
parents and what would be cruel and unjust punish
ment with the teacher would be equally so with the
parent. It was a Melina matter for the court to stipu
late the asset bounds of discipline to be gaffs's:led by
teachers. but cruel and unnecessary punishment must
not be sustained.
The court could not but condemn, in unqualified
term., any parent entering. a salmis house and taking
the law in their hands. Were it not for the surround-
Inge cf this ease, the court would certainly send the
defendant to prison; but thirsting the purposes of j no.
Mee would be maintained by a /be; that course would
be adopted. Mr Carlin was then sentenced to pay a
Ana of 200 and costs.

The world-wide reputation which these Chimneys
have acquired is due to their acknowledgedzeberiority
over all others. This superiority is derived from three
sources:
let. Being Ifty per cent. heavier than the common
Chimney, they may be handled with much leas oars.
24. The oval shape is an adaptation to the fiat flame,
the Chimney being at all points the same distance from
the heat, so that the danger of cracking by unequal ex
pansion is avoided
361. The material of which these Chimneys are manu
factured is unequalled by any other glass as a rapid
conductor of heat; and, practically, it is found that the.
eombination renders them almost entirely free from
liability to destruction by the heat of the flame. Hones
