THB DETAILS OF THB “ABTONIBKIKB MOVB."
As time speeds along the more fully we become
possessed of the enemy’s Intention In advancing hit
flotilla dawn the James. It was the move by whlok
Lee hoped to astonish the world, as the pnblle bat
been frequently apprised. The rebel rams worn
provided with torpedoes to blow up our monitors,
alter which they were to destroy ear pontoons,
which would cut off this army from Its base and alt
hope of Immediate reinforcement from the Army oC
the Potomac, and then proceed to Bermuda Hue.
dred and City Point to eapturethe immense store
houses of supplies which are located atthdso places.
As soon as the flotilla, consisting of three Iron-clad
rams and three gunboats, were through our obstrae-
Uens s ond, asthey sangnlnely expected, had destroyed
the only monitor which happened then to be In tbs
river, and proceeded on their way rejoicing, one
line was to be attaobed at several points, while
Long street, with thirty thousand men, was to as
sault Fort Burnham. The recapturecf this work
would necessitate a retreat of several milos, and,
under ordinary circumstances, would occasion m
mortifying humiliation, but, had It fallen by the
plans of too enemy, toe disaster might have boon
overwhelming. Rising'above these apeonlatlons,
there Is not now, nofhas there ever been, the least
fear that toe enemy would ever recapture this; work.
The day after we captured this Important position,
not even toe inspiration of Lee’s presence could
rally toe rebels tea successful charge. The recol
lection of what a bloody day that was to. .toe rebels
will never be forgotten, and had they attempted It
on last Tuesday, as now seems was their intent,
their slaughter would havebeen fearful. .
SUFFLIBS TO BE OBTAINED FBOM ODB W’ELL
STOKED “BASB.”
Instead of returning with the good hews or suc
cess toe flotilla has toe mortlfloation to report that
but one vessel passed our obstructions, toe Frede
ricksburg, while toe Hiohmond and Virginia, tw*
other ranis, grit aground. In this dilemma our bat
teries opened on them, doing great damage to to*
Virginia,-killing some anil severely wounding fiv*
of ber crew and some ot her officers. The unerring
fire of our forts, Uhnpled with the manifest determi
nation of eur land and water forces to dispute to*
passage of toe river, brought toe flotilla to n consul
tation, toe conclusion of which was hastened by one
cannonlers sending a shell into toe magazine of to*
Drewry. The flotilla then ran under the guns of to*
Howlett House battery, where It remained untn near
four o’clock on Wednesday morning, when It endea
vored to quietly pass up the river. It then received
the attention of Forts Brady and the Craw’s Nest,
THB C COOPERATIVE MOVEMENT OF/ THB LAHTI
Gen. Blekett, whole forces oppose ours on toft
Bermuda Hundred front, more sanguine of success
than Longstreet and other rebel chiefs, actually
made a demonstration against our works, which,
though it amounted to nothing, may have gained,
for him some credit In being prompt arid ready to
do his share of toe battle. It Is evldpht that some
body must shoulder the responsibility of this failure,
and it is not unUfcejiJfcAt -« may be-pat to tho ao

rashness, in disclosing an attack before too proper
moment arrived.
A DAY OF FASTING AND FBAT33B'.
The rebel Fresldlht is out In anotoa proclama
tion, In yesterday’s Blchmond papers, appointing a
day of prayer, faEttng, humiliation, arid all that
kind of “bosh.” These posters of Jeff have beoome
to be such an annoyance, from thoir frequent ooeur
rence and their hypocritical nature, that they
scarcely deserve a passing notiee. In fact, Ido nob
see toe necessity of this proclamation to adviße fast
ing and humiliation, since necessity has long
since Imposed these Christian virtues upon hIB
wicked people. The desperate effort of toe enemy
to reach City Point would leave one to-lnfer that
toe rebels had ceased praying, assumed their pride,
and resolved to eat as Boon as supplies could be ob
tained.
SUPPLIES FOB rbbbl PRISONERS,
The rebel fiag-of-traoo boat Wm. Allison? oame
down the James yesterday morning, with snch arti
cle's as the friends and relatives of prisoners of war
to our possession couldsendthem, eonslsttagchiefly
of tobacco. Some cotton also was brought down,
with which, no doubt, our author! tier will purchase
blankets and clothing for the Johnnies. Wagon
loads of good things were forwarded to our soldier*
to Southern prisons, which will cheer them In their
gloom, and serve to keep fresh to their recollections
how dear they are to the loved ones at home.

to command could give me no instructions. Learn

- bluff and took position and opened Ore on toe fort
at 10.46 A. M., wi than elevation of from 1,800 to
2,100 yards. Alter firing one or two shots I ascer
