|sgf** AODRESfi TO THE PUBI.IO
“ Working Women’s Belief Association,”
Beyeral months ago we published an appeal to the
citirsn* of the ** City of Brotherly Lews, asking for a
redress, at least in some measure, of the many wrongs
from which we have so loss suffered. That appeaiwac
published in several of the daily papers of this city, and
In the first number of the Woman** Journal* which is
issued by the. Association. That petition was read by
many of the generous souls of .this great, city, and,
through the columns of our little paper, found Its
way to other cities and Btotee« and from-Maiae to Cali
fornia a response has been given, proving there are
some ever ready to give a listening ear to the cry of suf
fering.
Araln we present our claims before you, to tell you
our wrong* have only begun to be righted, and so long
have we borne the weight of oppression and iaiustlee
that we feel our powers of endurance have been taxed
tothe uttermost, and we are no longer able to endure
the suffering and the misery imposed upon us by severe
toil and meagre compensation. We have not come be
fore the public asking charity, for we do not style our
selves begg&rs, but simply ask a just remuneration for
our labor, no matter in what department ,of life it is
performed. Work we are willing to do, and ask that
you may give it uss but at the same time that we ask
for work, we ask to be paid for our services that which
wiu enable us and our half orphaned little ones (made
so by the ruthless hand of that war which has so long
devastated our land) to live, enjoying some of the com
forts that tnake existence endurable; not to starve, or
so.ncarly so that to say we have sufficient food for our
physical needs would be Ip speak falsely. „ w „
We bave endeavored, as working women of Phila
delphia, numbering by thousands, to make our condi
tion known to all, by holding meetings at various halls
in different parts of the city. Inviting all to be present
With us, and, at different times, reading a few of the
hundreds of letters which have been received from
those who are struggling to maintain existence by the
mere pittance they ato receiving for their daily toil,
from early mern till late at night; yes, even on to the
small hours ofthenucceOdiag day. . , „ ,
- Among our first movements was that of framings pe
tition to the Secretory ofW&g,' signed uy tuirtoentnou
sand working women, which was presented In person
to the President of the United States, receiving an order
therefrom to the Secretary of War, getting from him
a promise to have the matter investigated, which pro*
raise waa fulfilled, resulting in an advance of twenty
greent. at the United States arsenal, in this city, and
giving employment to two thousand more women,
previously employing six thousand, and in treating
more humanely thoaa asking work. Since the begin
ning of this war the prices paid for female labor have
been reduced thirty per cent.; thus the advance prices
are net sufficient foment the demands upon the puree
ftomthe high prices of food, fuel, and clothing. We
hope this Increase of wage* is but the beginning of bet
ter times Our labors have been incessant, and the
Working 'Women's Belief-Association next opened a
Registry Office, where those leaking employment might
obtain it without the payment.of money, that might
deter them from asking, perhaps' thereby beißg-ariveu
to destitution and crime, and the employe* pais but the
smalt sum of fifty cents. Our next labor was to issue a
smrll ©Qjttbly paper, called the Woman’* Journal ,
the first number of which appeared in September,
through the columns of which we hoped to make known
our movements, and to cilliha.attention of (he public:
i 9 tb? many wrongs in our midst, and ask them to cora
menCd uis work of reformation. In connection With
our Registry Office we have opened a Work Boomf and
we purpose, without delay, .to open a Store,-where we
pledge oursclvei to have all .work that maybebrought
to us executed In a manner which will please the em
ployer, We solicit work of all kinds, that we maybe
. sbJe to give it to those who are suffering for tne necessi
ties of life, and enable us to give them for their labor
sufficient to sustain them.. Our Booms are at 736
ARCH Street. Come and sea us. and give-a. helping
hand to the honest, industrious poor who aro striving
to help themselves. MARIA J DENNETT, M. D.,
It President.

To facilitate business, if persons living in or out of the

their district, they can have substitutes sworn into
either branch of this service, which will fully exempt
them from draft.

• The present and prospective value of the stock of this
Gompahymay be inferred from the foot that it owns a
fee simple interest In 473 (four hundred and serenty
three) acres of the richest tested oil territory In Venango
county, believed by the moat experienced oU men in
, that region to be capable of producing a net annual in
come to the Company of one a half .million dollars,
or three times the entire cost of the stock,-which would
be equivalent to twenty- five per cent, a month on its
;. aubacj iptio jfprice, or one hundred and fifty ver cent .
per annum on its yiar value.
x’ne kiiflWtef I* * description <rf the Company's pro
. petty; ■ '■
One-fourth fee simple interest in ihe celebrated
“Hoover” Farm, situate on the Allegheny river,
about,two and one-half miles below
taining 292 (two huhdred and ninety-two) acres* with
252 rods (or Over one mile) front on the Allegheny river,
on which there are now twelve leases, each ten rods
square, and from which the owners of the fee simple get
one-half the oil, free of all expense. Besides this,"
-there are two wells owned by the owners of the fee,
from which they get all the oil.
. On this Farm there are now ten wells in operation,
producing an average of ten barrels perday, and several
others are about being tubed. There are also on it $7
(eighty-sflYen).more lots surveyed, and more than fifty
applications are how standing to lease the l&tierfor one.
half the oil to the owners.
Out of the twelve wells oirthis Farm eteem are now
paying handsomely : a fact which sufficiently demon
strates the great richness and reliability of, the terri
tory.
* Ho. 2
Is the entirefee simple interest in 181 (one hundred and
eighty-one) acres, situate on the Allegheny river,
nearly opposite the “Hoover” Farm; and a little
securer Franklin, at the mouth of. Mill Bun, having a
front of 96 rods on the Allegheny river, and one mile dm
both sides of Mill Run, with ample boring surface for
one hundred, vxUs t or Lots of ten rods square. This
tract is known as the “Stewart Farm, ’ 'and is clear of
all leases or incumbrances of any kind.
Therein now in operation a fifty-barrel well (beside
several smaller ones) on the Cochran Farm, which ad
joins this on the south. Infect, the “ Stewart’* Farm
is surrounded with good-paying wells, and within a
sheet time a single lease of 80 rode front, on the imme
diate opposite side of the river, sold for $165,000 (one
hundred mid sixty-five thousand dollar*.) On this
lease a good well has been struck within a few days.
In addition to the territory.of the “Stewart” Farm,
which is believed to be equally as good as the “ Hoov
er”) there are on it a three-story Grist Mill, with fine
water-power, a good farm-house, and other buildings,
that will be of use to the company.
The durability of this immediate oil section is illus
trated by t> e fact that some of the wells on the “ Hoor
*er” Farm kaVe been pumping for over four years, with
cutany material diminution in their yield, while the
oil here produced; from its greater convenience for
transportation and superior gravity, always commends
from one to two dollars per barrel more than the oil at
OU Creek.
Ihe officers of tie Company feel justified in present
ing the following estimate-of what, with vigorous
management, the above lands can be made to yield for
the benefit of the stockholders in a comparatively short
time: ♦
THE “STEWART FARM.”
There is room on this for one hundred lots of ten rods
square, all of which can be leased immediately for one
half the oil, frtt of all expense to the Company.
Estimating one well to eaoh lot (one hundred wells
although there Is robm for three hnndred) at the very
moderate ayerage of ten barrels each, would make a
-Ballyproduct of*---- l.OOObbls.
Ontof this the Company’s share would be. 800 bbls.
Value of daily yield to the Company, at
ten dollars per bbl (it is now selling at
~*13.60>....,.«
Allowing three hundred working days to
the year, this would make the Compa
ny’s annual net receipW, from the Stew
art Farm alone. • • •••
Allowing the same estimate for the ‘' Hoo
yer” Farm, in which the'Company owns
one fourth in fee of the land interest, the
annual net receipts from the latter would

prospectively, of enormous value.
Notwith'staading.atthe present prices of oil, the Com
pany’s annaal receipts (without any further develop
ment) would be forty thousand dollars, or eight per
cent, on the cost of the stock.
The president/Mr.-Stewart, is one Of the mostprac
