Th£ DISCOVERY OF THB PBOP2R
TIES of.kelp, or seaweed.
It has been discovered by the chemists of France
that Eelp oh Sea* weed has been found to contain the
properties necessary to give tone to the Stomach an i im
part a vigorous and healthy digestion. By distillation
and analysis it is found to contain lodine. Potassium*
Iron, Lime, and the Hypophosphites, and other very
important chemical agents which act on the food in the
stomach similar to the gastric juice, causing it to dis
solve, and a perfect digestion is the Tesuit. It is: re
markable how it produces strength and vigor to the
system, making the most slender fleshy and robust,
With a hale and hearty constitution.
In Ireland the Irish Afoss has been used by physicians
•for many years with markedsuccess, and it contaiua
many properties similar to Kelp, but in such feeble pro
portions that the Sfea*wetd is destined to supercede it
eutbely.
Frofessor Faraday, of London, has discovered that the
Kelp poFseesesaUo the Anthelmintic, .or Worm- destroy
ing property in an eminent degree, and* as it is perfectly
tale under. a T I ciicomsmoces, the day is rapidly ap
proaching when the Sea-Weed will he the only remedy
that will be used as a vermifuge for children and adults,
for Tap«-worm, and all other binds of worms that the
human system is liable to. '
Professor Faraday will prosecute hie investigations
BtiJLX further on this, interesting subject, and the public
would do well to beep themselves posted as .to the re
sults of hi« labors.
••IRISH lODIJSEAND MARIKEBALT3 COMPANY.”
The Gelway American, of the 11th inst., and other,
Irish pipers, have interesting articles on the establish
ment of this Company in the "‘City of the Tribes. * *
From, a Dublin contemporary 's columns,
some statements therein set forth as facts, The 5 will
show our readers the nature ;ol the .new discovery,
whicli hfts.led to the formation of a company which
promises to be of immense value to Ireland,’ and over
which, it is to be hoped, no English interest will have
. control.
••Hitherto sea weed embraced no wider range of ap
plication than the burning of it into kelp in a few iso
lated places on the coasts of Antrim Donegal, Galway,
and the Isles of Arian, for a short.period in summer,
when the weather was fine, and the people had no
other employment; and the use of i; in a raw tiate as a
manure by the'poor tenants or cott*r farmers living
within a mile or twcvmU*s of the coaßt, who have no
means of procuring farm-yard or other fertilizing sub
stitutes. OUtbese data its value was estimated.'- It
served no purpose beyond these two appllaucas. But
we have entered upon an age of discovery; and sea
weed may havebeen destined in the economy of Provi
dence to be the foundation of Ireland’s prosperity. Air.
hl’Ardle’s analysis’of sea weed, authenticated by the
eminent chemists, Ale ridge, Abjohn, Galloway. Sulli
van, and Cameron, by showing it to have a value far
; exceeding what it was previously known or thought
to possess, has tttracled the attention of the commer-.
cial world. , .
“The immediate and direct produots of sea-weed
are iodine, bromine, muriate of ammmia, sulphate
of potass, sulphate of soda, chloride of potassium,
• chloride of sodium, carbonate of soda.- From the
quantity of each of tbe-e substances which sea weed
is found to contain, its value and importance can
hardly he over-ettimated. But if one etnsiders for
a moment the ntes to. which the several products
are applicable, in medicine, the: aTts, and various
manuractures either as bases or agents, and the
amount of skilled and unskilled labor that wonld'be
hi ought into requisition bj the works they would
i create, the; magnitude of. the parent manufacture
would appear to be oiminished—the trunk to be Im-:
perceptible smid its many branches. ' The value of
! ?Ms long-neglected source of wealth is at length ap
preciated. a company is furme* for its full develop
ment. The gentlemen who determiaed upon this
have done well and wisely, both for themselves and
ihelr country; and aino very dUtant dar, when seeing
; the fcuccees which shall have crowned, - their under- .
takmg, the happy firesides they shall have created, the ,
. prosperity they.shall hare disseminated, and the im
pulse their example will have given to industrial and
manufacturing enterprise, they shall look bsci with
. feelings of patriotic pride and gratified delight to that
day on which they inaugurated a t-uty Irish manufac
turing era, teeming with riches, with happiness, and
peace.’ • -• ' -
. ; The above extract is from a recent number of the Gal
vti.y American, and claims to be a new discovery in
the -way of medicine. "While the discovery raay.be new
in Ireland, it is not so in this country, nor even in this
city, for dt is a well known fact here that Dr. J. H.,
SCHENCK has known and used blithe maierials named'*
ten years past, or longer, in preparing his

; its great-ruecess in the healing art; .

are visited every year daring the season from. February
to May, by dp wards of four thousand people, and their
use is specially recommsuded-ia cases of rheumatism,
venereal diseases,, and other complaints for which, sul

by both sexes in their use. The village of San Diego-,
has five spacious fini-class-hotels, with eve*y acccuur

the Bath establishment, and- their charges do not ex
