The Chien go Tribune' of the 231 last. says of the
money market in that city : There has been much ac
tivity in financial circles to day. The weather is very
- favorable to packers. There are large numbers of hogs
in market, and buyers are plenty. Pricas are well
maintained, notwithstanding the drooping gold market,
which, however, has given a sort of spasmodic kick to
day, carrying up the Pica to some extent. Packers
have made large mills upon the bankers to- day, many
of them tendering exchange for currency. This has.
made exchange plenty and created something of a strin
gency In currency. Other markets are generally fiat,
and do not sympathize with the tranalent rise In gold.
At present the banks are well supplied with means, al
-though somewhat short of currency; but If the rush of
yesterday and: to. day continues, a stringency in both
must come. Exchange ill Oat. The offerings have been
large, and have been generally accepted by bankers,
.although It somewhat crippled them in the volume of
currency which they wish to retain on hand. There is
no change in quotations, X discount buying, par sell‘
Inc but If the offerings shall prore as large to-morrow
as to-day, they will generally reduce quotations to X
discount buying, )4 discount selling.

A decision in regard to the liabilities of railroad com
panies respecting freight, and one having an import•
ant bearing on common carriers generally, was re
cently rendered In Cincinnati. The report is given as
followe: •
-The case of John C. Nye, of Cincinnati, against the
Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company, to recover com
pensation for loss sustained by damage to fifty two
hogsheads of bacon, valued at three thousand dollen,,
detatted at Leeabang on their transit from Parkersburg
to Baltimore, in May. 18th, by reason of the railroad
being in possession of the rebel army unaer Gsn. Lee,
was recently decldsd,in the United States Circuit Court,
in favor of the defendant. Associate Joanne Giles de.
livered an opinion in which he decided that contracts
for the transportation of goods by carriers Sad reference
always to those circumstances of which both parties are
assumed to have due knowledge, such as the antiunion
of the country and the semen of the year; and that the
carrier undertook to transport the goods in a reason
able time. taking all each circumstances lots conside
ration; that in the present case the circumstances of
tLe country entered izto the contract, and if the raft.
road company transported the ;goos as speedily as
these circumstances permitted, they were sot responsi
ble either for damages caused by delay, ae regarded
time or to the goods duds g the delay, if inch damages
were not cans , d by the negligence of tee &fondants
The Court further decided that the guarantee easiest
military.. seizure had refer/roe to the a,izere of the
goods themeelves, and not to the seizure of the road by
the enemy, whereby delay was produced. The Court
haying pronounced ltd opinion, told thejury that their
verdict mutt be for the defendant. on the case which
had been submitted ,• but the plaintiff, when called,
made no answer, preferring to submit to a non-snit.
This decision ill regarded as vet y important, as a num
ber of other cases of like character are pending in the
courts.
The following table shows the aggregate registered

pe seen that the Besmear steadily enlarged daring the
Whole period, with the exception of a falling off from
1856 to 1866, which Is accounted !Tor by the fact' that •
many of our meanie; were purchased by the English
