LITERATURE AND ART. —.The Marchioness de Boissy, some forty years ago sad more "the lady of" Lord Byron , s " love," now the wife of the Marquis whose oratorloal Anglopho bill makes Europe merry by its folly, is said to have given to the publishers a volume of unpublished verses bequeathed (1) to her by the author of 11 uhlide The now opera house In Chicago will seat about ..2,500 people, and the stage and dressing rooms will be so thoroughly warmed, that a Chicago journal says "we shall have no more shivering and blue lipped Normas, Rosinas, and Countesses to chatter Ala, and tens and bassi will lose the necessity of tearing their passions to tatters to keep warm." —A performance of tbo Demimonde of Aleasia tiro Dumas, Jr., -recently took plaoo in Turin. When the actor came to the passage " Every road leads to Rome, and the longest is sometimes the safest," loud murmurs arose from some of the audi ence, and prolonged apylause from others. The opera house at Baden-Baden is owned and managed by 111.13enazet, the same man who hires the gambling tables, and who is, in fact, fir more important than the Grand Duke himself. It is a neat little edifice, always well and fashionably attended, and enlisting the services of very good if not of the first-class singers. Colson, so well known in this city, was the prima donna last year. Both French and Italian operas are given, and the programme for the sons on just past—from the 15th of July to the Ist of September—included the operas "Le Dearteur," "Richard Coeur de Lion," "Joconde," Zampa„" "Dame Blanche," "La fille du Regiment," and a few others—malting in all fifteen French and five Italian operas for the season. Tho innovation or a ballet at the Italiens, in paw, is to be inaugurated on the 25th, when a bal let, entitled "Amore d'Arte," is to be produced. Ballets will also be Introduced in Traviata," " Ballo in Maschera," and "Lucia." Charles Adama, the _tenor, formerly of St. Louis, made his ddbdt as Lionel in "Martha," in London last month. His abilities are highly spoken Of by the English critics, • —Miss Hosmeris statue of Ts Zenobia" has arrived in new York for exhibition, and is thus described by the Rudd: "It was executed at Borne, and was sent to the London exhibition, where it extorted a high measure of praise from English critics. Tho impressions we had thus received of It were not dis appointed by an examination of the work itself. It is a noble composition, wonderfully vigorous for a female hand, and full of grace and majesty. The position chosen is that which represents Zenobia moving in the procession of Aurelian. Nothing can be finer than the pose of the figure, which is nearly siren feet in height and magnificently modelled, the only fault being the rather sensuous expression given to the mouth. In the arrangement of the or naments and drapery a refined WO and knowledge of effects are displayed, which could only be attained by a close study of the 'finest classical subjects. The Work rellec's great credit upon American genius; and Miss }Zenner has done well not to ac cept the offers she had for it in Europe until her countrymen had an opportunity of seeing It." Blerstadt's exquisite picture, "Silver Lake in the Sierra Nevada," which had been presented by him to the Sailors' Fair, arrived at Boston on Satur. day. We cannot overestimate the pleasure which it pas given to everyone who has seen it. It is finished most delicately. It.represents a Most charming Scene, different enough from the views of nature with which we are here familiar , to draw every oyo to it, and yet with aspects of landscape and effects efatmosphere which evdry lover of nature recognizes and prizes. Alexandre Dumas, the romancier, author of lildente "Lee Trots Mosquetaires," and something less than a thousand other works of notion, many of which are well known and have been Won 'dilly read in the United States, intends leaving Paris in the latter part of December or the early nut of January for New York. It is the intention of Dumas in travel About four months in the United States, and he goes with the avowed purpose of writing a book, but whether a book of fact or dation to does not state. He will take with him a prints secretary and two translators, and intends having is work published simultaneously in New York, Faris, and London. Dumas is an enthusiastic friend of our country and her institutions, and,*as he is an aathor whose hooks are probably more extensively read now In Europe than those of any other, living ar dead, it is perhaps a little important that his reception and treatment while in our country should So such as to strengthen rather than diminish the favorable imprOssion which he has of us and ours. Dumas is a dark mulatto of most unmistakable hue, with hair considerably crisped. He is now about sixty years of age, and is one of the finest:looking can in Europe. He is a reckless, extravagant man, noanoially speaking, receiving an Immense 'Dooms from his works, spending from two to three hundred thousand francs a year, always in debt and always sorrowing. He is a man of great bonhommie and 'ilndness of heart, and gives away largo same of money every year to artists, literary Bohemians, icd poor devils of every description. TIIN STATIC Et.ROTION FRAUDS.—Onr country contemporaries !amine of the southwestern counties are muck ex• wised over alleged wholesale frauds by Democratic 'edges of election. The Gettysburg Slat shows that lent% has been deprived'of his seat in Congress Dad Cotfroth substituted through barefaced impu dence. Soldiers' votes were thrown out ad libitum tr the flimsiest reasons, although when the vote aimed to be In favor of Ooffroth it was always meted, though the reasons for rejection might be site as powerful. The Somerset Herald has also it.plaints about Democratic dishonesty is Bedford, hltoo, and Franklin, which It utters with a geed cal of energy. It says : ''More brazen, reek less frauds than those perpo. rated upon Judge King, or upon Ross or Arm strong, were never conceived. STRANGE STORY.—Forty years ago, says the rout Joy Herald, a Mr. Reldllnger, of Vest Don e Rot a man to take his wife and children Mr. J. D.
