To the Editor of The Press: Sin : I send you the following, from Mrs. Brown ing, as a contribution to the public sentiment of the Campaign. I am, air, yours truly, A. 0. "FIRST NEWS FROM - MAL A.FRA.NOA." Bettor), peace, peace, do you say 7 What ! with the enemy's guns in our ears 7 With the country's wrongs not rendered betok What! while Austria stands at bay In Mantua, and our Venice bears The cursed flag of the yellow and black? Feace, peace, peace, do you say And this the lffinclo I Where's the fleet, And where's the sea I •Are we all blind, Or mad with the blood shed yesterday, Ignoring Italy under our feet, And seeing things before, behind 7 Peace, peace, peace, do you say What ! uncontested, undenied 1 Because we triumph, we succumb? A pair of Emperors stand in the way, (One of whom is a man, beside) To alga and seal our cannons dumb 1 Peace, peace, is still your word 1 We say you lie then ! that is plain. - There is no peace, and shall be none, Our very dead would cry, Absurd P' And clamor that they died in vain, And whine to come back to the sun. Hush! more reverence for the dead ! They've done the most for Italy Evermore since the earth was fair. Now would that we had died instead, Still dreaming peace meant liberty, And did not, could not mean despair. Peace, you say 4 Yes, peace, in truth ! But such a peace; as the ear can achieve 'Twixt the rifle's click and the rush of the ball, 'Twixt the tiger's spring and the crunch of the tooth 'Twist the dying atheist's negative " And God's face—waiting, after all! The latest ad vices from Europe indicate no subsidence of the disturbed feeling in financial and commercial eircles which has prevailed for the last two months• On the contrary, the eemi•panlo is spreading over a 'wider area than it was at first confined to, and the pro babilities are in favor of an aggravation of the prevail ing distrust. This state of things has been inducefi by the progrees of the war in this country acting upon an 'unduly inflated system of trade and finance in Great Britain, which .had its origin in the stoppage of the ,Freuthern trade consequent on the war. The London Times, of October 18th. says: The advises from Frankfort state that the liquidation • - for the middle of the month,'ln that market, was one of 'the worst tor a low time. The continuous influx of „American bonds, Winch was not felt so long as there was an abundance of money, became suddenly appa rent; and as reach as nine per cent. interest was paid for ;carrying transactions forward to next account. 'while Austrian funde, for which in the beginning seven or eight per cent. were charged, were ultimately taken ,at three per cent. by speculators for a fall. There is, it is remarked, a general impression that the 'offspring of the French mobilitr, such as the Italian and the Piet lit Hands mob filer, are the real cause of this dieturbance of our money market, as It is credibly re- Totted that toe banks of Amsterdam have 10,000,000 torine in bills - of such banks in hand, Which they will mot renew. Up to the present time no failures have been reported at Frankfort or in any other part of -Germany, with the exception of Austria, where mane' have occurred, particularly in consequence of the de- Tressed state of the sugar trade. Manchester correspondent° of the London Timm dated the 18th October, says: ha• 'We hale to report the gloomiest marke commenced. yet ocmpred since the present crisis &me of our spinners and manufacturers had been led to -expect, to use their own phrase, - "that things had taken a turn," and that prices had reached a mini- Anton . In consequence of this fee.ing, mannfacturera in several instances had 'written or telegraphed to their Manchester agents to advance selling quotations for their cloth ld to 2d per pound. To such persons the :market has proved a great disappointment- In home trade Yarns, the rumors of failure's have had a de rirre sing effect; and there lea want of confidence, so that we have had a more stagnant mat ket than previously. -low cop. arns, as well as low bundled yarns, are y cheaper. Cloth has ,been exceedingly difficult to sell. We hear of six or seven more manufacturers having *topped payment tpday, and the feel gof gloom me w . to be increasing es the know ledge of these failures comes to the public ear. The commercial public have, Of course, been awaiting advleee Dom India with some anxiety, and a private telegram has been received to day (the first since news of-the origin bad begun to ar aive and it bears out the fears entertained here -that a reflex of the advices sent hence would be die-- couraging. • According to this telegram tee markets ,there had been paralyzed by the bad accounts to hand from this side.
