p,;(,,r,caren, IL 1., Sept. fire occurred
here to-day which destroyed fifteeen or twenty

The loss will be about $50,000, the fire extending

Two SIDER TO A Smonv.—The Washington Sfax
uives the following amusing account of the recent
capture of cattle by the rebels :
" The correspondent of the New York Tribune
writes from the front of Petersburg claiming that
all our cattle captured by the enemy from the
,Tomes river corral were recaptured by Gregg's ca
valry.
"We regret to say that the Tribune correspondent
is not well informed. We have recaptured, at last
accounts, precisely one bullock, an unfortunate ani
mal with a broken leg, whose fearful bellowings In
a niece of woods attracted our cavalry to the place,
and the woods having been carefully recormoltred,
surrounded, and penetrated, the recapture above
mentioned was successfully made. The cattle ac
count therefore stands: Captured by the enemy.
2,437 ; recaptured, 1; missing, 2,436."
The Herald's City Point correspondent tells a dif
ferent tale about it, however, and one which, if true,
places the joke upon the other side:
" The rebels, not satisfied with having driven off
two thousand four hundred and eiwirty-dro excel
lent beef cattle out of a herd containing but two
thousand four hundred and eighty-six, these ma
rauding rascals had no sooner got them safely be
yond the Blacliwater, and repulsed - our cavalry sent
Si, pursuit, than they impudently returned to the
F razing ground with four or five brigades, and spent
thirty-six hours in search of the one missing lame
ox.'
A STRANGE iiiiSSlELE.—General Hood sent his
compliments to General Howard the other day, In
the shape of a east-iron window - weight, weighing
seven pounds. It is about a foot long, and an inch
and a quarter through. This nitsallo of destruction
is believed to have been thrown from a Whitworth
aim and must have carried a distance of two miles.
Nobody was hurt by its arrival. The rebel stock of
ammunition must be ' somewhat exhausted when
they have recourse to such materials of war.
POLICEMEN ON A STRLKE.—The police of Wheel.
ins, Va., are on a strike. Several months ago they
requested an increase of pay. Finding the city go
vernment disinclined to accede to their demands
they have refused to do duty any longer, and the
city is without its usual guardians. Highway rob
beries are, in consequence, of nightly occurrence.

one hundred and seventy feet each, with rigging-at

These lands are situated adjacent to the OLD Bum NO
SP RUCS, Wirt county, Virginia, and front - upon the
little Kanawha river, with good wharfage. From this
point the oil ca u be shipped to Parkersburg, on the
Ohio river, for fifty cents a barrel. by the river.
These lands are adjacent to the tract recently sold to
the "Burning Spring Petroleuni Company," of New
York, whose capital is live million dollars, and are
nearly equal iu productive value to the New York
Company's land, and in prospective value are believed
to be in no Via y inferior.
Vel id of these Burning Spring Walls were first
bored in kilt, and then prmlaced at a depth of two hun
dred to three ndred feet as much as ll,nr hundred
barrels per day. They were abandoned on the break
ing out of the rebellion. The restoration of order has
caused cspitallAs to look to ibis section. This is un
doubtedly the bent oil region isVirginia, as can be as
certained by inquiry of an y one familiar with teat sec
tion of coo - tarry.
While these well: at from two hundred to three hun
dred feet deep are now yielding from twenty to thirty
'barrels p.r day, it has been demonstrated that by
boring them to the depth of five hundred to seven hun
dred feet the third sand stone will be reached, as was
done at Oil City, and a large and constant supply of oil
obtained. It' is proposed by this company to expend
- fmcnt.p.fil thousand dollars- at once in boring, under
the superintendence of a reliable engineer, the preheat
wells deeper, and a number of new ones to a Still
greater depth.

The production of imperfectly developed wells now
on these lauds, would probably afford an intatediate di

went production of badly bored and neglected wells,
but upon the future development of what is believed to

willingly dispense with the use of them. They are the
best quality in every part, and by far the lightest, most
