The captain formerly belonged to Co. 0, 20th Regiment Penn.. sylvania Cavalry, and a number of the men have Seen active service. They wore well equipped, and mounted on fine horses. • EODT IN STATE. The body of MajorJas. P. Jones, of the ith 'Knipe Regiment, was laid In state in Independence Hall for several hours yesterday morning. The deceased erne widely known in this city, and his remains were visited by a large number of his friends. During the time the body was in state, the large flag over the hall was hung at half-mast. The remains were sent by railroad to his native State. PASSED THROUGE The 13th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers, Colonel Leonard commanding, numbering fifteen officers and TAO men, passed through the city yester day on their way to Boston for the purposo of being plastered out of the service. The 4th Meals Regiment passed through on Monday on their way to the front. Sergeant liuryard. of Company (I, and A. H. N,orcross, of Company I, were knocked off the cars and instantly killed on the way hore, and when a; few miles out of Lancaster, Pa. RECELITING .The recruiting of hnndred•days+ men still pro. grosses slowly. Most of the regiments now forming 'should be consolidated and that at an early' date. from the 15th,to the 18th instant, $52,500 were paid to the bundred•days , men. This only represents 1,050 enlistments, but does not include all who have been mustered in. Warrants for the payment of the city bounty to thirty men, who have enlisted for three yeare;and been credited to the quota of the elty, were lamed yesterday morning. .EMPLOYMENT OF WOUNDED SOLDIERS BY directions from headquarters a number of wounded and maimed soldiers are being taught at the Central Telegraph Station, Fifth and Chestnut !Streets, tho art of telegraphing. It is intended to employ these men in this branch of the pollee busi ness, the work not requiring any physical strength. DRAFT POSTPONED. • The draft recently ordered to fill the quota of the Twenty-pith ward, under the call. of the President in October lest, which was to have taken place at Frankford, this morning', has been postponed until Monday, the 26th Wet. TO ENROLLED CITIZENS Attention is called to the advertisement of Messrs. S. H. Lechler, has been consolidated with tho Merchants' Regiment, and will be under his compand: MISCELLANEOUS. WAII, ON THE CANINES The flesh of one hundred and thirty-seven canines has already suffered, so far this season, under the provisions of the city ordinance in such cases made and invvided. The manner of catching the canines in this oily differs from the method adopted in other places. In some cities ' the authorities have ua =Waled dogs clubbed to death in the public streets. Mere have used poisoned sausages, but with little effect. Knowing dogs are decidedly averse to this kind of food. New Zealand dogs, however, relish it, as they doubtless imbibe the, principles of their masters, who still adhere to cannibalism. Instances have been known of thwmost intelligent dogs run ning away if an American bologna should happen, to be.pointed at him. Be this as it may, the plan adopted in Philadelphia. to capture unmuzzled" ca nines seems to be the best. The doge are generally taken in the night time and impounded in Button wood street, near Thirteenth. They are kept twenty-four hours, for redemption. After the ex piration of this time, the nonolaimed are killed, and the carcases are subjected to orders. The "pound , ' often presents sights that are not uninteresting. The game is brought there almost every night. Bore may be seen dogs of every des cription ; male dogs and female dogs ; dogs with long shaggy tails, and dogs with long atlas tails ; doge with short tails, and dogs with no tails at all; and dogs with such Curly tails, indeed, that they cannot a tale 'unfold. Then, again, we have dogs with long ears and dogs with short ears ; old dogs and young dogs ; bully mastiffs and ball terriers • Newfoundlanders and St. Bernarders ; black dog s and white dogs, poodles and rattan terriers, brown dogs and yellow dogs; intelligent dogs, affectionate dogs ; well-fed aristocratic dogs ; and gaunt, hungry curs of low degree; in short, there may be seen every variety of the canine race, as ao many candi dates, for—well, we will not say, positively, for some " satacnger" establishment. What becomes of the. fine skins of the dogs is a subject of considera tion ; but It is very improbable that the m6st philo sophical reasoner could approximate to their desti say. Whether they may finally encase the hand or some young lady either in the shape of soft French kid gloves, or lining of Siberian squirrel muffs, made up of aristocratic tc tabbies,”isproblem un knoWn in Euclid's elements, or Vodges , mensura tion.' We leave this part of our dogmatical reflec tions, and advise at once, that all persons who have 'valuable dogs should keep them securely Innzzlod, or otherwise they may bo captured anksent to the "bow-wows.” EXCITIMENT AMONG lIIICKSTETt9 - - Some excitement has prevailed among the female hucksters, ordat least some of them, who occupy Stands or stalls in the Farmers' Market HOMO, on Narket street, above Eleventh, in consequence of a male member of their own number • entertaining Copperhead proclivities. The volubility exercised by the women is said to be rather rich at times, and alecidedly amusing. It was feared yesterday that a Merlons difficulty would ensue between the parties, but, fortunately for the peace, nothing was used bat that great magnifier, the human tongue. It is said that this Middleman supplies the military hospital at 'Bread and Cherry streets with putter at a pro litable rate, thin charging the representative*oithe 'United _States Government a higher price than if the butter was obtained directly from the farmers. some information was left at the Central . Station yesterday of the affair. The female hucksters say that the peace cannot be maintained much. longer, If the objectionable individual does not keep his laudations of Jeff Davis to himself. DROWZiarG OASES A boy named Moore was drowned yesterday after In a brick-pond at Nineteenth and Federal streets. Austin Hyde, aged 7 years, was drowned last °ve ining, between six and seveno'clock, at Maiden-street wharf. He resided at 057 Frankford road. "Get up from there, you drunken bummer." again came from the muffled officer, "or you'll freeze, I tell you." A grunt louder than before served to fill up a lull in the wind. " Well, lay there and freeze ; you ought to keep sober slob nights as these," Said the officer, as the hour of twelve rang out in accents clear from the aloyamensing Station House clock bell. The officer started elfin haste to answer roll-call, so that the relief guard might go out to attend to duty. The unknown adventurer, finding the officer gone, sprang to his feet, and, hastening towards the sta tion holm, at the halt intercepted the officer. " Holloa ' old follow," said the stranger, "its a Cold night." "Who the -- don't know that 1" responded the pol teem an. "What's your name," demanded the stranger. "Go 'bout your business, now. No capers, or PIl lock you up." "Look hero, officer, I only want to tell you that a man has fallen into a snow-drift, and I want you lo come and help me to rescue him before he freezes; perhaps ho has perished already." "G'iong, I tell you, or lock you up. You're a liar; nobody is out sick nights as this am:rept officers and likes of you."' "I'll report you to the Mayor," retorted the stranger. "Go home if you've got any, or I'll report you to the station-house." The stranger turned to ward off from his face the power of a sudden blast of wind and drifting snow • the officer backed his way against the current, and thus the distance between the two parties increased. The officer reached the station-house, and soon turned in and was speedily dozing. The stranger arrived some time after, and entered a charge against an officer stationed at Passyunk road and Washington avenue, between eleven and twelve o'clock, with having permitted a man to remain in a snow-drift into which he had fallen, and where he was likely, loo perish. "That's a lie," shouted the officer, arousing from his incipient sleep. " You are a consummate liar," retorted the stranger, "and zu arc the very officer I" com plain of." The officer sprang from his conch, and seizing his billy made a rush at the stranger. The latter sprang back, and instead of placing himself into the attitude of self-defence, threw oil his disguise, and revealed to the astonished officer and sergeant in charge the well-known and pleasing features of Robert T. Conrad, the first Mayor • of the consoli dated city. His Honor ordered his dismissal from the force, and after warming himself at the well-filled coal Stove took his departure for home. It seems from the evidence that the loser and another person visited a lager-beer saloon of rather doubtful reputation, in the vicinity of the navy yard. It Is not very clear how the robbery was committed, but It Is a well-established fact that Peddle was robbed, and that the ring was found In the possession of the accused.
