Captain James M. Glillss, superintendent of the
'Observatory at Washingtonlwrites ton friend of
'Ours stating that the assertion made by Lieutenant
Maury, that the United States Government had
Wantonly destroyed all the valuable scientific ma
terials on which he had founded his researches, is
entirely false. You aro fully authorized, says Cap
tain Mfrs in the above-mentioned communion
.tion, to slabo publicly that all the maps, charts,
scuttles, papers, eta. left by Mr. Maury, are still at
the Observatory, with the exception of two private
letters, which were consigned to the Department of
'the Navy.
We feel it our duty to publish the above state
ment. of Captain 0 Miss, which is fully confirmed by
the fact that the American Academy or Sciences has
duly lately appointed a special committee to report
on the value or the purobaros made by Lieutenant.
Maury, and fur which the Government of the United
States had granted him the sum of three hundred
and thirty thousand Col'ars. We do this the -more
cheerfully as at the late meeting of the Scientific
Association of Franca, at °heathery, and In this
°Mole) Journal, we have hitherto taken occasion to
denounce the supposed vandalism of the Govern
ment of the United Stator, our sole authority
being the direct assedion made to us personally by
i t e ieutenant Maury himself, in Paris.
Wo make this public retraction of what we have
asrorted, not to aggravate the disgraceful position
of Mr. Dinky, but to exonerate the Administration
at Washington from a calumnious charge.

A BLACK Fr.so.—On the 3d, General Stoneman,
Of General Sherman's army, captured from the 3d
Texas Cavalry a black nag with a skeleton figured
upon it, together with a death's head and Cress
bones. This flog is no myth or creation of the wild
Ilincy of some terrified trooper, but a reliable
thing now in possession of a surgeon in the Gene
ral's command, and seen and handied• by the mem
bers of General Schofield's staff. They are said to.
have carried it from the first. What they expect to
have understood by it is easily arrived at from the
remark of a member of another Texas relment.
who was taken prisoner and brought to hew (max
tors. When asked by a member of the staff It he
belonged to the regiment which carried the black
flag, lie replied that he did not, else he should
not have been brought there. It is, perhaps, need
less to state that our men are reported to have
taken no prisoners from the 3d Texas Cavalry.

ing description of the scenery as viewed from this
mountain: "After a pleasant drive of some four
miles to the half-way hones, we took horses and fol

found ourselves at the Tip-Top:House. rise moun

profile of a man's face, looking upward. • While
our artist friend was looking for a. place to sketch,
we made our excursion to the chin, which fur
nishes one of the .grandest and most extensive
views in New England. From the Lase of the
mountain to Lake Champlain, there is an agree
able diversity of hills and valleys, forests, and vil
lages. Further along may be seen the lake, with
its surface gloaming In the sunshine like silver,

the distance, some sixty miles off ; while the in
tervening space is filled with the deep valleys of
the Connecticut and Winooski rivers. To the
north can be seen the valley of the St. Lawrence,
with the Montreal Mountain rising In the hazy

a more pleasant trip we never had.'s
"OLD ISUNDRPM" Ix Oasrr.—A letter from Ge
neral Sherman's army contains the following : "At
early dawn this morning, ere the troops ware fully
awakened from their slumbers. the melodious notes
of 'Old Hundred,' given forth by ono of the brigade
bands, rang out upon the air, awl were echoed by
the green-capped - hills beyond. Soldiers Intently
occupied in preparing the morning meal stood still
and listened to the melody and instinctively joined
In It. It hew from regiment to regiment; brigade
after brigade took It up, and, ere the notes of the
band oessed to reverberate, five thousand voices
were raised In 'Praise God from whom all blessings
sow.' A moment later all was still. Breakfast was
taken ; and so silently did the 'veterans of many
battle-fields break camp and fall into line that
everybody remarked It, and complimented them for
their conduct. I have heard Old Hundred. often,
When the huge lungs of the organ seemed inspired
with life, and a congregation joined their melodious

NOVEL SCENE AT A IVEDDCIIO.—The Bolton
(England) Chron{cle tells this story : An unusual cir
cumstance occurred at a weddiag on Monday last,
In the parish church at Farnsworth. Joseph }Lind

ness, calling himself sixty gears of ago, and
judged by ,Is "good-natured friends" to be
about three-score and ton, was allied to Harriet
Boots, aged flity-six. The ceremony having been
completed at the?' altar, by the Rev. W.
Burns, the bride and bridegroom accompanied
him to !the vestry to sign the register. That
verification being secured, the bridegroom asked
permission to sing a verse of a hymn before
they left that sanctuary for the wiles and tempta
'tions and troubles of the outer world. It appeared
to the reverend gentleman a strange request, but
on Its being urgently pressed he gave consent, and
'the bridegroom toned forth in hearty if not meta.

TITS RECBVITING OF BOYS.
Tho fifes are squeaking, the drums are• beating,
the glorious old stars and stripes are flying In many
sections of our city. To all appearances, thorn is
Considerable bustle, and men " who have seen e'er
vice" are very anxious to fill their regiments. There
is no doubt that some of tho effects are being made
by truly patriotic men. But., at the same time,
others, having more of the almighty dollar in view
. than anything else, are as equally anxious to raise
the required number. We have paid attention, In
a calm sort of way, to the outward show of military
movements generally, during the past few days, and
are prepared to say that in all this there is a .very
Considerable amount of humbug nothiri*but
sheer, rank 'humbug. Men aro engaged In
raising recruits, Squads, companies, ;rogimentil,
who aro not at unqualified, some beciause of having •
been dismissed the service for cowardice .and other
causes ; some because of inexperience. Many of the
recruits that have been thus enrolled into compa
•pies and sent to camps aro more boys, yho cannot
stand fatigue, and who would be mere toys in the
hands of rebel men. It is perhaps well enough to
instruct the youth In military knowledge, bat other
means should be adopted than this.
If any one will take the trouble to go to the
arsenal, and look at the "bro.Vo defenders" there,
he will be surprised at the immbnee number of
boys, some of whom are certainly not over twelie
or fourteen years old. To so groat an extent has
this raid upon the youth of our city been made, that
anxious mothers are strongly Imploring for the re
storation or their children, and, It is now being
feared that the price for blacking boots will advance,
because many of the bootblacks aro enrolled In the
, military service. Tho result of all this will be a
wholesale resort to the habeas corpus. Thus the
Courts will he occupied when the summer vacation
should take place. All this could bo avoided if
plain common sense was practiced from the first.
It is evident that men do not wish to associate with
mere boys, from the fact that six veterans proceeded
a day or two WIC° to a rondevous to join a regiment,
. but finding that a number of .boys wore already
enlisted, turned away in disgust. The enlisting of
mere boys Is an outrage upon parents and the com
munity, and a daring swindle upon the city, and
the State, and the National Government, and it
,ought to be stopped at once. The officer who re
•oelvee a boy, under the age of eighteen years,
without the written consent of the parents, violates
a moat wholesome law of the State and the nation,
and he should be made to pay the penalty.
For humanity sake, lot all the boys be dismissed
at onto from the ranks, so that their appearance in
midterm shall no more disgust sensible people, or
Induce ridicule. Wo may state, in this connection,
•that a suck a regiment as those now being orga
•nized in this city was sent to the front, as the
.(}rand Army commenced moving, under the great
:Lieutenant General IL S. Grant. Their regimental
Officers and a majority of their captains, and nearly
all their lieutenants, ran like cowards. The regl-
Mont of youths were loft to themselves almost; they
. estraggled, got into confusion, and It was rou t ed no-
cessary to have some of thous shot down, to prevent
3 general panic at the time an important movement
was being made by the 241 Army Corps, under the
command of tho gallant Hancock. Tho National
Government does not want boys to perform the
work of men, and It is really .to be hoped that the
gay authorities will withhold the bounty from all re•
eults who do not oome up to the requirements of the
tlaw. This will, in a measure, cheek the reckless
toss of some mon who4tave been dishonorably dig
' cased the service, and" bearded mon will fill the
ranks, and thus give to the people what is really
;wanted, the most ample protection.
Some of those youths are so sinallflutt It is Imes-
Slaty to roll up the pantaloon logs to keep them from
!trolling in the mud. Besides thlr, we regret to say,
Oat some of the youngsters were in a beastly state
t 'Motion In camp yesterday afternoon; while
in another camp, it Is reported, that ono of the drill
odlcent oncolpd his head shaved and was drummed
out of munp:' w We regret that a simple duty to the
country Induces this exposure.
The general belief which prevailed yesterday, that
Washington was safe, and the rebel invaders crawL
tag toward their nests, allayed, to a groat oxtent,
the excitement in this city. Recruiting was tOlera.
bly brisk, and tho hundred.days regiments aro still
nearer completion. All enlisted mon belonging to
the sth Union League Regiment, Colonel Neff, will
be utustored into the United States service, at the
headquarters of the regiment, at 10 o'clock this
morning.
The let Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry will as
semble at Cho armory at 9 o'clock this morning, to
receive final Instructions, horse equipments, fx.o.
The Commercial Regiment, Colonel Lechler, is
one.ef the live accepted. Those enlisting in this
regiment are mustered In and sant to camp imme
diately.

STRONG EVIMINCE.-0110 of the principal points
made at atrial in a Court of Probate in England,
to prove the Incapacity of a testatrix aged seventy
three, was that "when she played whist she revoked,
