French Lawyers in Trouble for Writing
a Law Book.
The Paris correspondent of the London Deily
News gives the following account of the recent ope
rations of tho French police:
"1 have to•day to report a grievous freak of arbi
trary power, which reminds ono painfully of the
'worst days of the present empire. At an early
liour, June 10, the pollee made domiciliary visits to
the houses of MM. Gamier Pages, Carnet, Dreo,
Ferry Gambetta, Etienne Arago, Olamorgan
void, Durand, and several other equally respectable
members of thelato Electoral Committee of Paris,
to search for papers. Tho residence of M. Floquet,
into an opposition candidate for the Legislative
Corps, in a southern department, was also visited,
and, in his absence, his deskt and (lumen wore bro
ten open. The pretext for this act was that lists of
Members of a secret society wore likely to be found
at the houses of those gentlemen. Tho true mot No
—as I state without any hesitation—was to terrify
the electors of France on the eve of the elections for
the councils-general.
"Most of the men whose homes have thus been
`violated aro young barristers, whose groat crime is
that they have written conjointly* valuable manual
of eleotoml law, Instructing citizens what to do
When illegally interfered with by prefects, pm.yors,
.and gendarmes, and showing how the present Con
stitution, with nil its artfully restrictive olrtuses,
nevertheless leaves a large measure of real power
'ln the hands of Lho constituencies, if they have only
the intelligence and the courage to make use of it.
This book, no doubt, greatly contributed to the un
looked for success of the opposition et the general
elections of 1803, and it is greatly (oared. by Go-
Vernment that systetuatic attention to its coun
,sels will most seriously change the composi
tion of the councils-general, the elections for
which stand fLxed for ftmlay, the • 19th. It is
.probable that some of the gentlemen whose domi
ciles have bconinvaded today have taken. part in
that organization of -the country elections without
-which universal sutfral,,,re must ever boa fraud and a
delusion, No doubt they have endeavored, by all
legal means, and in spite of many calculated legal
difilculties, to .prevent votes from being thrown
away and to recommend names to the notice of the
constituencies. The object of the violent measure of
the pollee is to get possession of the names of their
correspondents iu the provinces. To punish elec
toral committees as Members of secret societies, and
at the same time to prohibit all public meetings, lea
genuine litte Napoleonienne, and a beautifurillustra
lion of the way in which universal suffrage may •ba
MO to work.”
THE DEATH OF GEN. (13Ianor) POLK—WHO
DI
EIECTED TILK FATAL SKOT.—A rebel prisoner, who
Awls he was within fifty foot of Genenil Polk when
he was killed, states that Joe Johnston and Hardee
were the other generals in company with Polk. At
the time the first shell struck, the two first-trained
generale remarked simultaneously that they had
110 desire to make breastworks of thems.olves for a
Yankee cannon to play upon and so they stopped
aside under cover of the neighboring . trees. Polk
said ho was not afraid of a Yankee shall, and held
'lds position. Scarcely had ho spoken thus, when
the second shell terminated the rebel General's life.
General Sherman is said to lutvedirected the fatal
Shot. With the aid of a powerful glaSs he discovered
three general field officers of the enemy, with their
staffs, making their way toward the crest, of Pine
Mountain. General . Sherman watehed their move
silents, and saw some of the .group-on tholnoun
talnk taking .observations. The vigilant general
saphlly rode up to the Ingtery best located to roach
the rebel officers, and 'lBund it 'to be Stmonaon's:
As) it was noon, the men had nearly all lett
the guns for their meals. Going up to one of
the pieces, Oen. Sherman asked for the officer in
;Charge, and being told Ise waist his dinner. he was
summoned to return instantly. When the lieu
%tenant arrived, under the General's personal direc:.
tons, a shell was sent on to Pine Mountain. "It
has fallen about twenty-live feet too 'short; a little
More fuse anti you have it," said Sherman, after
watching its effort. The next shot struck some one,
Oreourse not known at the time. "That will do,"
' said the General, in a quiet, cool tone, and then
rode off, followed by a single orderly, the usual nu-
Merkel strength of his field staff.

MODENT To NAPOLnosr. The Paris (Juno 15)
Correspondent ojthe Cork Rep o rter says :
The almostolusive subject of conversation at
the Bonree to-day was an ace dent said to have hap
penedto the Emperor yesterday at Fontainebleau.
It is said that while rowing on the lake'in the plea
sure grounds, ho fell into the water, and that he re
ceived an accidental wound on the head from a boat
which pushed forward topick him- up. "Owing to
the absurd laws against 'false news,' none of the
evening papers dared to make the slightest allu
sion to this, which is really the leading topic of the
day." The London correspondent of the New York
'Esenise Post, in referring to this event, Says:
" Aeeerding,to a report which I have reason to
COnsider nearest the truth, Napoleon, feeling a lit
tle elated after dinner, went down to the pond and
flaked the boatman to unfasten for lam one of these
light pirogues in which only on person can sit, and
which inn onlyhgmanaged &very skillful rower.
'The boatman .efiempted .to remonstrate with Ids
Imperial Majesty, but the latter insisting peremp
torily, there was no choice left but to obey. Scarce
ly, however, had 'the ship which bore Caesar and
Ca'sar's whole fortune'. left `the shore when it
capsized, and the master of France got well soused.
By means of a polo be was safely landed. Though
this occurred alters full dinner, It does not seem
that this health of Louis Napoleon has been in
jullously.affeeted by the accident."

The object of the corporation s to erect two sets of
poles and wires, fanning a double line, to run by dif
ferent routes, connecting the c ties of IS ew York, Phila
delphia, Baltimore, and Washington. end all the prin
cipal intermediate points, and , o establish °dices for the
reception and transmission of telegraphic messages,
and, by connecting with other lines at the main points,
to be able to send messages to all parts of the United
States and Canadas.
The line is now In course of construction, and en
tracte have been entered into for the purchase of. wire
and other materials. None will be used except of .the
beet (plenty, ifed.it le conlemplaied to have one set of
wires In operation between tho main points in less than
sixty days, and the oilier met will be put up and in ope

No enterprise now in the market offers equal prospects
of profit with that of telegraphing. and the nature of
the business proposed to be done by I his Company, as its
name.implies, warrants its stook tieing recommended
to the public as a choice investment.
A careful estimate, based tar below the actual capa

it can earn and declare a dividend or 18 to 31 per cent,
per annum.

To the Ciiizcne of Prinadi/Phitz
Agreeably to previous notice, shall now review Ve •
personalitiett and other cmtside matter as contabon. In'
*the article beaded "Philadelphia Against the Worid e "
and signed by David Evans. ..,
As the thief, when hard proceed, is Um first to cry'
"4r/opt/tier. "so 10 the man who has I,ll(4ed.traduagy
and wrongfully accußed his neighbor, the first to err
villain, end to claim the people's sympathy.
'rho erstprominent point in this article lathe writer's
very Medest Pretensiona. • .
Re assumes to he Philadelphia inerelp, and to stand
anima time world omit—extremoly modest, surely.
This point (having been replied to by illosani. &
Son) Tpass over by simply raying that it le easy to show
that Lillie & Son are much the largest patrons of this
city and State of any Safe manufacturer to the United
&Mee, as they use en much more material than any
other—the product of thin State. •
The next point to be noticed is the writer's call on his
Philadelphia. friends to read me extract from the Eon
ming Telegraph of April 16.1664, which shows Rome of
the different ways; the common safe is opened. Now, if
the reader will refer to the article 111 the Flecatna Tele•
graph. of the 16th, he will And it there elated parties
tarty that Poen ways worn of COMM occurrence, and
that they Wore known to burglars; and I now say the
different ways pointed out were at the time well known
to burglars, and had been preciously published to the
world.
But it seems to snit the writer'm Mum to leave out those
lads in his Mune. Ife adopt@ the principle that the
Piny of ." Hamlet" mnrit be written, even though It he
necessary to leave out/km/rt. Desperate end 'require
desperate means, and It is evident that the thief's triter
does not like lo stand alone. I can, however. offer him
this consolation, that notwitlatenffintrthe disoopitton
helms shown In every way to aid the thief, he ban met
with but ltl success.
„ .
do not believe he elm And a hnrilar in the country
that would even thank him Wall his efforte; for every
prorcvslonal burglar knows thnt.,l( he can get a hole.
into a Safe lock he to all right; and. unless the writer
can learn the burglar bow to drill chilled iron. which
I very much doubt, hie occupation is gone.
The next point which notice is tbo very grave
mteAtlon put tho writer, whether It le not easter to
drill one email bole through Chilled Iron. Door
than twenty boles through the common Sheet Iron
Nor?
The reader will ask any disinterested iron-worker
whether ,he cannot drill. even twenty small holes
through one-sistaiinth to one-eight inch sheet' iron:
much wilier than to- drill one hole throne, one.ned-a•
half to Pwo inehati Fetid chilled iron, ane let hint
answer the question.
The next point which the writer alleges as the cause
of the controversy Is ;
That Lillio'tragant, among others, called at the Con
solidation Bank., on Mr. W. 11. Blunter, hanker.
Allentown, and on the Treasnrer of the West Chester .
Railroad, saying to Abe latter he could break Into his
bank and burglar-proof care In five minutes; and to the
two former..that he could pick their locks, made by
Evans & Watson, in five minutes.
Now, I am the sole responsible agent of thle'city for
Lillie's Safe; and rpronnu nee the alines statemedts ab
solutely falee, so far as it applies to myself . , as lam
not aware that I bare had env conversation with either
of the two latter parties on• the subject of Safes at all,
and I have never. made any such s tatements, as are al-, ,leged, to the former or any other person. But I take
the full responsibility as to all that is published is the .
:him-mph of April le. 1564. (which can be examined in
lee nri rated circular at my &petal any time, as thearticle
was taken from that), and I am prepared to sustain
every position there made to the satisfaction of any die- .
interested person.. •
Thus have I reviewed the prominent points in We ar
ticle, and the writer's reasons for his unreasonable
attack num; Lillie's Safe are found to be mere pretence,
and without the slightest foundation. The real cause
will be found in a short review of. the Sate history in
Philadelphia. It is a fact well understood that the
writer has realized a fortune In the last few 'years by
making safes of the lighted material, with the cheapest
lock. and In every way got up in the cheapest manner,
and filled mainly with red clay (which costs nothing),
to give them the appearance of weight and solidity. and
that he hassold these Safes at very high prices, making
an extravagant profit.
Iris a fact alga vrell understood that within thelast three
years. Lillie's Chilled Iron Safe hashoen largely intro
duced in this city and State, from the simple fact that in
telligent men have preferred a safe that had one and a half
to two inches thickness of solid iron, being also drill
proof, wish &thorough burglar-proof lock. to a safe that
had one-eixteenth to one. twelfth of an inch thickness
of eheet• iron, with the cheapest common lock, and not
burglar-proof at all, especially when the former cost
only about the came price as the latter.
How does the writerattempt to remedy this atelculty?
Not by improving his own safe, hut by an attempt to dis
credit Lillie's. How does he do, Ole? He .firet pub
licly announces that Lillie's Safe is neither fire nor
burglar-proof, and publishes an array•of false state
ments, first published hr other safe-makers, which he
knew at the time had been publicly proved to be
false. Second. be succeeded to dupe la house Who
had one of Lillie's Safes by similar false repre
sertßtione, to exchange a Lillie's' Safe for Evans
& 'Watson's, by giving them a Safe he asked near
WO for, in exchange for Lillie's, which cost $115; and.
since about the let of January last, I am told he has
s pent mach of his time in the attempt to disfigure the
Safe in every way-, first by sledging. then by grind ing koles through it (having discovered that it had not the
usual hardness). An to the Lock. hejfrat claimed it was
en infringement upon Evans & Watson's Alphabetical
Lock, but as that was not patented it was no go; and last
ly, to discredit the Lock he shows that the combination
of the Lock can bepicked up from the outside if a hole can
be got through the door in the right place, a wonderful
discovery, which has been fully answere d. Now, why
resort to all this contemptible meanness? Why not
come out fairly and squarely and have Evans & Wat
son's Safe placed alongside of Lillie's. and have them
fairly tested both as to their fire and their burglar-
Proof qualities,' as he has been challenged to do often?
The reason le plain. The writer knows that It will not
do to place 1-16th to 1-12th of an inch thickness of sheet
Iron against 1,4 to 2 inch thickness of hard chilled iron,
to stand either fire or the burglar, and " that's what's
the matter.' ' .
